FRIDAY 6 JULY 2018 | TERM 2 | WEEK 10

Principal’s Message Well done to the whole school community for ensuring we have had another amazing term at Lennox Head Public School. We have children involved in many activities - sporting, cultural and academic - it has certainly been very busy but also productive. I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the students who attend here who make my work days enjoyable. Your smiles and conversations make my days here worthwhile. To all of the staff both teaching and non-teaching thank you for going above and beyond in everything that you do. I for one thank you wholeheartedly; you all do an amazing job. Staffing – Term 3 Next term we welcome back Mrs Richardson from maternity leave. She will be working 3 days a week job sharing with Miss Vidler in KRV. She has been into school a few times to meet the class and she is very excited to be returning to work. Miss Vidler will continue to teach the class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mrs Richardson will have the class for the rest of the week. Miss Vidler will also be here on Wednesdays teaching groups of various Kinder students. A new permanent staff member has been appointed – Mrs Morgan will join us from the start of term 3. She will be teaching all classes across the school for the remainder of the year in the Science KLA. As of next year Mrs Morgan will be placed onto one of the classes in our school. We welcome her to Lennox Head Public School. Canteen news Congratulations to Sue and the hard working P&C committee who have assisted us in becoming a healthy canteen. We have successfully passed the NSW Government menu check – the first school in the state to do so. In addition we were recently nominated for an award through NSW Government Health Northern NSW. We were the winner of a quality award in the Keeping People Healthy Category. Well done everyone!

Homework A new format will be ready for the beginning of next term for all parents to access. The major changes will be access to spelling words for parents who would like this. There will be no sheets to complete, nor will there be any expectations regarding completion of tasks. It is simply information regarding activities students can complete with parents if they choose. School Reports/Interviews These were distributed to students on Wednesday. If students were absent, the reports have been posted. Your child’s report may have indicated that the teacher requested an interview. In addition, you may feel that you would like to have one, even if this was not indicated by the teacher. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 25 July after school, week one of term 3. To book an interview time you will need to go to the following website – www.schoolinterviews.com.au you will then need to enter the access code 3hkf8. This will allow you to find the teacher you wish to book the appointment with and the time you would like. Interview bookings will remain open over the holidays, but will close on Monday 23 July to allow teachers time to adequately prepare for the interviews. Late bookings cannot be accepted. School Uniform If you need to update or replace any school uniform items please do this over the holiday break. School Locker has all of our uniforms. A reminder socks should be white, grey or bottle green. We will be checking this next term to ensure you all look fantastic. School Photos You may have noticed that the photo on your child’s report has their new school photo. Your photo packages are due to be delivered during the first week of next term. NAIDOC Week On Wednesday 26 July we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week at school. Students are encouraged to wear the colours on either the Aboriginal Flag – red, black and yellow or the Torres Strait Islander Flag – white, blue and green. Throughout the day there will be a traditional Aboriginal dance performance here at school as part of the celebration. Have a fantastic, safe break! See you all on Tuesday 24 July. Sport News

Congratulations to Jamilah for her achievements playing in the Tennis tournaments of JDS (Junior Development Series) which is part of Tennis Australia. Jamilah is currently the number 1 in the 10’s and under of the Upper Region and number 3 for Upper Lower Region combined - Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads. She has this ranking after her last joint region tournament in Coffs Harbour. She was invited to the Super 10’s put on by Tennis Australia in Armidale on 30 June and 1 July. This competition is the pathway to qualify for Super 10’s Talent 10's at the 2019 Australian Open. Only the top 4 players of each region are invited. Congratulations Jamilah!

Congratulations to Jimmy M on being selected for the North Coast Rugby Union team to play in the PSSA State Championships. The game will be in Coffs Harbour from Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 August. Good luck and we can’t wait to see how you go! It’s a TRY!!!! The girls touch football team was victorious against Byron Bay PS winning eight tries to two. All girls played well with regular interchanges to keep up the momentum against the opposition. Great ball handling skills were shown by the whole team and resulted in fast play of the ball and movement up the field. Maddie’s athletic speed was a great advantage to the team and resulted in her scoring six tries while Ivy and Neeve scored the other two tries. Defence was also tight which was definitely needed as Byron were very skilful ball handlers. It was a reflection of how well the girls played as Byron were tough opposition. Well done to all of the team – Maiya, Maddie, Neeve, Chaise, Ivy, Juniper, Stella, Ava, Ashlea, Jamilah and Bella. Also special thanks to Finn for refereeing the game. By Ashlea and Mitch

STEM Day Science, technology, engineering and mathematical problems were the activities of the day. Students travelled to Lismore for a practical STEM experience to allow students to have a better understanding of how things work and to encourage an interest in these fields. It was certainly a success. Students worked in teams to create inventions for the future. Some ideas included robotic hands and how this could work and move. Another team was involved in building a tall structure that could withstand an earthquake. The design was later tested on an earthquake simulator. The students enjoyed testing their product. Electronics was just another focus area that students explored. Well done to all students and we look forward to the future with their designs to make our life a little easier. By Amelia and Mitch

Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Alert 06/07/2018

There has been confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in children that attend Lennox Head Public School. Pertussis caught at school can spread to any other members at home. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Pertussis can be especially dangerous for babies. Pertussis starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection may also occur in fully-vaccinated children. What should people sick with pertussis do? Pertussis is readily spread from an infected person to others by coughing and sneezing. If left untreated, it can be spread for up to three (3) weeks after the start of the infected person’s cough. Do not attend work, school or a childcare facility if you or any household members: • Have a cough as described above. Please see your doctor. • Are being tested for Pertussis by your doctor and waiting for test results. • Are being treated with antibiotics for whooping cough for at least five (5) days after starting the medicine Keep coughing children away from babies. Pertussis vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it’s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines. For further advice, please call the Public Health Unit 1300 066 055 or NSW Health website http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Factsheets/pertussis.pdf http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx
