Glorious Strawberries

The first garden strawberry was grown in France during the late 18th century. Prior to this, wild strawberries and cultivated selections from wild strawberry species were the common source of the fruit.

The strawberry fruit was mentioned in ancient Roman literature in reference to its medicinal use. The French be-gan taking the strawberry from the for-est to their gardens for harvest in the 1300s. Charles V, France's king from 1364 to 1380, had 1,200 strawberry plants in his royal garden. In the early 1400s western European monks were using the wild strawberry in their illu-minated manuscripts. The strawberry is found in Italian, Flemish, German art, and English miniatures The entire strawberry plant was used to treat de-pressive illnesses. By the 1500s refer-ences of cultivation of the strawberry became more common. People began using it for its supposed medicinal properties and botanists began nam-ing the different species. In England the demand for regular strawberry farming had increased by the mid-1500s. Instructions for growing and harvesting strawberries showed up in writing in 1578. By the end of the 1500s three European species had been cited; F. vesca, F. moschata, and F. viridis. The garden strawberry was transplanted from the forests and then the plants would be propagated a sexually by cutting off the run-ners.Two subspecies of F. vesca were identified; F. sylvestris alba and F. sylvestris semperflorens. The intro-duction of F. virginiana from Eastern North America to Europe in the 1600s is an important part of history because this species gave rise to the modern strawberry. The new species gradual-ly spread through the continent and did not become completely appreciat-ed until the end of the 18th century.

When a French excursion journeyed to Chile in 1712, it introduced the strawberry plant with female flowers that resulted in the common straw-berry that we have today. The next time you eat a Strawberry remember how long they have been around.

Pretty in pink, this orange-scented, rum-

spiked strawberry coconut mold makes a

Recipe Ingredients:

1 (0.25-ounce) package unflavored

gelatin

Coco Lopez)

2 large egg whites

1/4 cup granulated sugar

ten unflavored gelatin in orange juice.

Cook over medium heat for 3 minutes,

stirring constantly. Remove from the

"Spring into Summer", held at the Danube on June 21st, was a sold-out lunch event, or-

ganized by our community volunteer chef, Robert Ben, and our own Elke Pitkin. There was a Cana-da flag pin and a chocolate treat at every place setting, as well as a co-operative "Brain Stretcher" game to enjoy. Jan read a couple of silly jokes and helped Dorothy with the "Share the Wealth" ac-tivity. Congratulations to prize winners, and a big "thank you" to all the members who worked so hard to prepare, serve and clean up for us.

Celebration

An aged farmer and his wife were leaning against their pig-pen when the old woman wist-

fully recalled that the next week would mark their golden wedding anniversary. “Lets have a party

Homer,” she suggested. “Lets kill a pig” The farmer scratched his grizzled head. “Gee Ethel”

he finally answered. “I don’t see why the pig should take the blame for something that

happened fifty years ago.

The Seniors and Caregivers Wellness Fair on Thursday, June 14th, was well-

attended by members of both CHATS and the DANUBE and by the public in general. Mayor Keffer read the “Seniors Month Proclamation” to open the event, and fifteen community partners offered information for Seniors and Caregivers. Andrew MacPherson from Bradford Fire and Emergency Services gave a presentation on Fire Safety in the Home. After his presentation, the hall was quick-ly transformed into a café and a delicious soup and sandwich lunch was served.

Thanks to Linda and the CHATS volunteers as well as our 15 community partners and Danube members who helped with the Fair, to Elke for the lovely lunch and all who attended. Jan Evans

Tour of the Pommies Cider Company

On Wednesday, June 6th, sixteen Danube members boarded a small yel-

low school bus and travelled south to Bolton to tour the Pommies Cider Company production and canning facility.

As we walked through the cidery, Nick Sutcliffe, co-owner of Pommies, explained the process of making and canning all-Ontario apple cider. We were able to see how cider gets from an enormous tank into a one-pint sealed can, which then joins other cans on a palette and is wrapped for shipping across Canada. After the tour, Nick invited us to taste some of the fruits of his labour, namely “Pommies Original” cider and their new-est product: “Sangria Cider.” M-m-m-m.

We rounded out the afternoon with a snack and each participant received an unexpected take-home gift from the cidery. Thanks, Nick!

N.B.: Pommies Cider can be purchased at the LCBO and in some grocery stores. If more members are interested, Jan might be able to arrange a second tour later in the summer or in the fall. Let her know at: [email protected]. Jan Evans

Age Tells All

Checking out of the grocery store, I noticed the bag boy eyeing my two adopted children. They often draw scrutiny, since my son’s a blond Russian, while my daughter has shiny black Haitian skin. The boy continued staring as he carried our gro-ceries to the car. Finally he asked, “Those your kids?” “The sure are,” I said with pride. “They adopted?” “yes,” I replied. “I thought so,” he con-cluded. I“ figured you’re too old to have kids that small.”

LUNAR RHUBARB CAKE

½ cup butter

1 cup white sugar (I used a little bit less)

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp. Baking Soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup buttermilk (or soured milk)

2 cups fresh rhubarb cut in ½ inch pieces

TOPPING

2 tsp. cinnamon

¾ cups brown sugar

¼ cup butter

METHOD:

Cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg & vanilla. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Toss rhubarb with 1 tbsp flour and mix gently into the batter. Spoon in a 9 X 13” buttered pan.

* Combine topping and sprinkle over the cake. Bake at 350 degree oven for 45 Min. or until a skewer comes out clean. This cake needs no icing. It comes out holey and looks like the moon. It is very good.

A knock at the Door

Wednesday morning the weather was too bad to play golf. I was bored with nothing to do. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. I opened it to find a young, well dressed man standing there who said: "Hello sir, I'm a Jehovah's Witness." So I said, "Come in and sit down." I offered him a fresh cup of coffee and asked, "What do you want to talk about?" He said, "Beats the Heck out of me. I Never got this far before.."
