Leicestershire and Rutland may not be the biggest region in the UK, but our culinary scene is growing fast. Over the past few years we have seen a surge in interest in food in the area, with more cafés, gastropubs and restaurants opening up, ensuring that the region has a diverse range of cuisine.It’s important to me to support local producers, but quality is something I will not compromise on. We are fortunate enough in this area that we have the best of both worlds, with some of the most dedicated producers who work tirelessly to ensure that the fi nest ingredients are available right here on our doorstep. At Hambleton Hall we rely on the likes of Katie Machin from local Windy Ridge farm, who provides incredible free-range eggs – a staple in any kitchen, and Seldom Seen Farm in Billesdon for their excellent fruit. I also get local crayfi sh and pike freshly fi shed from Rutland Water, as well as woodcock and partridge brought straight from the shoot to my kitchen. Places like the Rutland County Show and Melton Mowbray Farmers’ Market are fantastic for celebrating the region’s excellent produce. There’s such a vast array of exciting ingredients, from unique local cheese to the fi nest wild rabbit; engage with the sellers and you’ll discover some true gems. There’s plenty of opportunity for foraging too. Hedgerows are great for things like berries, horseradish, and fl avoursome weeds such as hogweed and chickweed, which I like to incorporate into springtime menus at Hambleton. Our riverbanks also yield fantastic ingredients, including watercress and wild garlic.Recently, I’ve noticed gastronomic trends have gone full circle. People have grown tired of dishes that exist merely to show off an array of technical skills. Food now is all about simplicity, maintaining clarity of fl avour and sourcing the fi nest-quality ingredients. One thing I’d like to see is more young people from the area applying for jobs in the industry. We at Hambleton love to nurture local talent through apprenticeships; don’t be intimidated by the Michelin star – embrace the experience of working in such a stimulating and rewarding environment. It’s going to be another exciting year here in Leicestershire and Rutland, so go out and appreciate the brilliant ingredients, fantastic suppliers and great restaurants on your doorstep.

Whether it’s a lunch party for two, a wedding breakfast for 60 or a reception for 64, the dining room, private dining room, study or croquet pavilion can be configured to create the right setting. The hotel can also be hired for exclusive use.In the elegant restaurant, sommelier Dominique Baduel presides over the award-winning wine list and is on-hand to suggest the perfect wine to complement your meal. The menu of the day offers a wide range of Hambleton’s favourite dishes. You might begin with the crispy egg, black winter truffl e and home-grown Jerusalem artichokes. The free-range egg is poached before being wrapped in potato string and fried to perfection. This is served on a bed of burnt hay, which gently smokes the egg and creates a dramatic display as the cloche is lifted. Follow with locally sourced loin of fallow venison, which is creatively complemented by celeriac and chocolate. To fi nish, try the smooth gingerbread panna cotta encased in a spun-sugar pumpkin. RuExpect a warm welcome at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel whether the log fi res are lit or not. This former farmhouse is tucked away in the desirable Rutland countryside and is the perfect destination for a relaxing meal, fun-fi lled party, lavish wedding, pampering weekend or family holiday.

Quite simply, this is a stylish hotel that delivers simple, honest food to a high standard. Each dish is beautifully presented and focuses on fl avour. The emphasis on seasonal produce, sourced locally where possible – even from the hotel’s own kitchen garden – makes it diffi cult to decide what to choose from the imaginative menu. To start, my partner and I delighted in the pan-fried scallops with chorizo and pea shoots, and warm Exton Estate partridge with an artichoke, pear and beetroot salad with shallot dressing. Our mains surpassed expectations – my chargrilled sirloin of beef, with chips, roast tomato and stuffed mushroom, was plump and succulent, and my partner couldn’t stop raving about the fl avoursome marinated monkfi sh with vegetables and

deep-fried noodles. You will fi nd real ales at the bar, and the extensive wine list is divided into European and New World varieties.

Inevitably, you’ll be enticed to book a room in these fabulous lodgings. The hotel boasts 46 stunning guest bedrooms, all en-suite. In addition, there are private suites with self-catering options, and conference rooms capable of accommodating 330 people.

CMLeicestershire’s only Michelin-starred restaurant is guaranteed to impress with its outstanding food, fi rst-class service and atmosphere that oozes laid-back decadence. It’s an intoxicating combination that had me planning my next visit before I’d even fi nished my starter.

John’s House is the creation of head chef John Duffi n (chef profi le page 39), who, after years spent honing his craft at various highly acclaimed eateries, returned to his family farm in Mountsorrel to showcase his skills at his own fi ne dining restaurant. His menu focuses on the quality and provenance of ingredients, with all of the meat and most other produce grown on the farm itself.

I began with ratte potato, egg yolk, truffl e and Comté cheese ravioli. It was rich and delicious as well as comforting and complex. This was followed by roast loin of fallow deer with salsify, red cabbage purée, chocolate and tardivo. The quality of the ingredients, attention

to detail and excellent craftsmanship was evident in every mouthful. My dessert of Yorkshire rhubarb, marshmallow, rhubarb sorbet and honeycomb was an outstanding combination of intense fl avours.

With its carefully chosen selection of wine from around the world, indulgent tasting menu and exclusive atmosphere, John’s House is a truly exceptional restaurant that deserves to be top of every discerning diner’s must-visit list.

LeOne of Leicester’s premier dining spots, and the city’s fi rst Champagne venue, The Case oozes style and offers staggeringly good value. A prime example is the set-price lunch menu, which offers two courses and a complimentary aperitif for £10 or three courses and an aperitif for £12.

To follow, sea bream with grilled potatoes, spinach and watercress is sure to be a winner. Tempting treats bring your meal to a sweet fi nish; vanilla panna cotta with berry compote and tonka bean granola is just one example of the delicious desserts available. The Case’s evening menu is equally impressive, with an offering including corn-fed chicken terrine wrapped in prosciutto to start, haunch of venison with salsify, violet potato and truffl e oil to follow, and lemon posset with biscotti and berry compote to fi nish. There’s also a set-price menu, with two courses for £16 and three for £20, allowing diners to enjoy excellent food and drink at excellent prices.

It’s evident from the menus that a passion to produce great British food with a global infl uence using modern techniques and fresh, seasonal produce is at the heart of The Case’s ethos. RuThe charming No.3 The Yard is brimming with accolades. It has been recommended by the AA, The Michelin Guide and Harden’s, and has received a Certifi cate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. Those who visit rave about it, so a trip should certainly be on the cards.

Located along a quaint cobbled side street in the notably picturesque village of Stamford, No.3 The Yard looks every bit the idyllic eatery you would expect from such high acclaim. The considered interior retains the character of the ancient building, yet the decor is light and fresh. Alongside the dining room is a conservatory with French doors that open out onto the heated courtyard – a popular place for al fresco dining. Inside, the restaurant is divided into several different eating areas spanning two fl oors. For quiet evenings away from the hustle and bustle or private parties, opt for one of the more secluded rooms – one seats around eight people and the other up to 20.

When it comes to the food, diners can be assured that only the fi nest, freshest local ingredients, all prepared with fl air and creativity, make the cut. There’s plenty of choice at No.3 The Yard, whether you’re looking to dine for lunch or dinner. The à la carte menu always has seven starters and seven main courses to choose from. Desserts are plentiful, with a choice of six, alongside a selection of homemade petits fours, and an additional mini dessert and cheese option.

Prices nevertheless are reasonable, starting at just £6.50, and most of the main courses can be adapted for smaller or larger appetites. At lunchtime diners can enjoy two courses from the set menu for just £14.95, and the courtyard has its own exclusive lunch menu that runs alongside the main lunchtime menu. During weekday evenings, the daily specials represent great value, with options such as moules frites and a glass of wine, or fi sh and chips and a glass of Prosecco priced at £15.

Where would fi ne British food be without a wine list to match? At No.3 The Yard, you can expect a well thought out wine list featuring bins from Croatia, Greece, Lebanon and England, as well as a fantastic cocktail menu.

HBNestled in the Leicestershire countryside is the historic village of Thurlaston, which lies between Leicester and Hinckley, just a short fi ve-minute drive from J21 of the M1. Located opposite a beautiful Norman church, Poacher’s Brasserie is a former 17th-century inn that has been sensitively refurbished to provide a tasteful, contemporary dining area, while the lounge and bar area retains all the charm and ambience of the original 400-year-old building.

Neapolitan head chef Vincenzo Della Pietra (chef profi le page 39) has created a brasserie-style menu that features an appealing mix of fresh, seasonal dishes at affordable prices. Tempting starters include wood pigeon accompanied by celeriac purée and Port sauce. Main dishes are equally impressive – take for instance the sumptuous pan-fried fi llet of wild stone bass with pumpkin purée, spring onions and purple potato. Pizzas are also available and as Vincenzo hails from Naples, you can be sure of the tastiest and most authentic pizza in the area. Don’t overlook desserts, with cappuccino cheesecake and cantuccini crumble a particularly

decadent option. Themed nights, such as Italian night on Wednesday evenings and pizza on Thursday evenings, are also popular. Look out for the interactive theatre nights and sports evenings, too. At Poacher’s Brasserie, a warm welcome and memorable dining experience awaits.

RuThe charm of a stunning Grade II listed country pub has been combined with exceptional cuisine at this hidden gem in the heart of rural Rutland. Classic fl avour combinations are given an update on a menu that expertly showcases locally sourced ingredients and fresh, seasonal produce.

My starter of goat’s cheese cheesecake served with roast fi g and beetroot purée was a rich and earthy delight, with the contrasting colours and textures making it look just as good as it tasted. This delicious dish was followed by an equally comforting and fl avoursome main course of confi t duck leg, chorizo and sausage cassoulet with buttered beans. My dessert of spiced poached pear with berry compote and blackcurrant sorbet was a light and fragrant end to a wonderful feast. Each dish was an expert balance of exciting fl avours with hearty, comforting portions.

In winter the cosy bar area, with its quirky decor and warm log fi re, is the perfect sanctuary in which to relax and enjoy an aperitif. For

summer visitors, the pretty garden is an enticing al fresco dining spot. The restaurant itself consists of four interconnected rooms of varying sizes, all of which make The Jackson Stops an ideal venue for everything from a romantic meal for two to a group celebration.

In the heart of the beautiful Leicestershire countryside you’ll fi nd the stunning Catthorpe Manor Estate, home to The Linden Tree restaurant. This elegant Edwardian manor house is one of those rare sights that truly take your breath away, with its surrounding 26 acres of enchanting woodland.The hotel has undertaken extensive refurbishment within the last year. Inside it is bright and welcoming, and attentive staff show obvious pride in their beautiful surroundings. The Linden Tree’s dining room blends classic elegance with a relaxed, contemporary feel thanks to its muted and serene style, ambient lighting and beautifully draped curtains.As we began our meal it became clear that the chef’s execution and culinary style elevates simple ingredients to sublime dishes. My starter of mushroom soup was rich and comforting, and my companion’s choice of charred asparagus with Parma ham was declared a perfect combination of fl avours and textures. This followed with an impeccable main course of succulent, pink slices of duck breast, served with grey peas, light and creamy celeriac mash, and fl avoursome jus. My companion’s strips of fi llet steak with Stilton, served with fresh, spring vegetables, potato Dauphinoise and whisky sauce was sensational, and he was still enthusing over the sumptuous dish long after his plate was cleared. Tempted by the delicious menu of indulgent desserts, I opted for a memorable homemade sticky toffee pudding, which was served with silky, warm butterscotch sauce and ice cream. My companion was equally satisfi ed with his homemade apple and cinnamon crumble with creamy vanilla custard. Later, whilst sipping our freshly brewed coffee in the elegant drawing room we agreed that the relaxing atmosphere of The Linden Tree, combined with the excellent quality of the food and the friendly and obliging staff, had left us feeling truly satisfi ed.A variety of menus are available so you’re well catered for whether you fancy a club sandwich, a two-course lunchtime special for £12.95, afternoon tea or an indulgent Sunday lunch. Unsurprisingly, Catthorpe Manor has also proved to be the perfect venue for weddings, romantic dates, family events and meetings, and both the Garden Room and the Library offer alternative dining options. Whatever your reason for visiting, you will not be disappointed.

Tucked away in the rafters above Kilworth Springs Golf Club, The Attic is a very special restaurant that boasts stunning panoramas of the adjacent golf course and picturesque farmland, coupled with an imaginative and beautifully executed menu of modern European dishes. My starter of smoked duck Caesar salad was perfectly balanced in fl avour, with the different elements complementing each other beautifully. The crispy duck egg was exquisite with the charred baby gem and Parmesan purée. My partner started with beetroot and goat’s cheese arancini – an unusual starter that we both thoroughly enjoyed. We continued with mains of braised blade of beef and roast rump of lamb that were both satisfying and wholesome. For dessert, I opted for the delicious Black Forest chocolate pavé while my partner savoured the iced banana parfait. Both puddings were beautifully

presented and demonstrated the chef’s talent for matching fl avours. In the summer months, The Attic is transformed from a snug hideaway into a breezy sun-fi lled sanctuary, with its wide rooftop terrace ideal for romantic aperitifs or informal al fresco dining. If you’re out with the girls, the LWL menu (that’s Ladies Who Lunch, to you and me) offers light meals particularly geared to those looking after their figure and includes a free glass of Prosecco to wash it all down. On long sunny days, The Fox & Hounds Picnic Society is a real treat on the lawns. Your table, ready dressed with a picnic basket, just awaits you to choose from the tapas-style menu. RuFalcon Hotel has overlooked the town’s marketplace for five centuries. Inside though, time has not stood still. Over the last six years, the hotel has been lovingly refurbished and updated. Plump sofas surround the large open fire in the main lounge, which combines modern style and comfort with The Falcon’s traditional heritage. The restaurant is gorgeous – think crisp linen, fresh flowers and candles. Service is friendly and the staff can offer recommendations if you’re struggling to choose what to order. The regularly changing, mouth-watering menu showcases seasonal ingredients and local produce, wherever possible. We chose starters of Brixham scallops with smoked pancetta and a tangy salad, and a light caramelised fig and onion tart with melting Tunworth cheese and spiced apple purée. For the mains, the roast rump of local lamb was exceptional, while my partner’s roasted Skrei cod was cooked superbly with crispy skin and tender flakes of sweet fish. The accompanying corn fritter, sweetcorn broth and purple

sprouting broccoli were superb. Our desserts provided a wonderful conclusion to what was a fantastic dining experience. I opted for the smooth clementine posset with chamomile-poached pear and cinnamon ice cream, and my companion’s coconut crème brûlée with cashew brittle, spiced pineapple, and lime sorbet was truly exceptional. CMSituated within the Loughborough University campus, Burleigh Court is a bright, spacious and modern four-star hotel and conference centre that also offers an excellent dining experience in its restaurant. We enjoyed the fabulous and plentiful Sunday carvery, and were very pleased with the starter selection of locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables that was presented at the salad bar. For the main course, the range of mouth-watering local roast meat and vegetables was equally impressive, and my companion declared his beef (served with all the trimmings, naturally) to be most tender and satisfying. My vegetarian choice of the butternut squash, pepper and Somerset Brie tart was incredibly moreish, and worked well with a serving of watercress sauce. Both mains were substantial, and we agreed that the portions would more than satisfy even the most ravenous of appetites. However, with the display of tempting desserts,

which are supplied by Dominic at David North Patisserie in Rothley, any notions of forgoing a third course were soon dismissed. I plumped for the creamy, rich toffee cheesecake with a side helping of fresh fruit salad, and my companion chose the chocolate and cherry bombe. Both were sublime. Over coffee and mints we agreed that, due to the excellent quality of our meal, we would return very soon.

HBHead chef Rory McClean (chef profi le page 40) has brought the technical fl air he gained at Michelin-starred restaurants in London to this beautifully restored rural pub in the pretty village of Shawell. The White Swan combines the welcoming atmosphere of a traditional country inn with refi ned, imaginative and stunningly presented cuisine. After we enjoyed an aperitif in front of the cosy wood burner in the snug, I began my meal with crispy duck egg with Iberico ham, peas and curry spice. It was an expertly balanced dish in which the colours, fl avours and textures complemented each other beautifully. My main course of venison loin, red cabbage, vanilla parsnip and smoked pancetta also had the wow-factor – the carefully chosen ingredients, bursting with rich, earthy fl avours, were all cooked and seasoned well. Dessert was a peanut parfait, served with confi t lime purée and salted caramel ice cream, which was every bit as indulgent and fl avoursome as it sounds.

For true epicureans, the Friday and Saturday night Chef’s Table offers the ultimate luxury dining experience. Rory and his team will design a bespoke and seasonal fi ve-course menu for your party of up to ten people. Courses are introduced by the chefs and specially selected wines accompany each dish. If that’s not enough, regular Champagne breakfasts present just one more tempting option for those of us committed to full-on gastronomic decadence.

CMThe moment we stepped inside family-run Sysonby Knoll, we felt at home. From the front, the building looks unassuming, yet it boasts surprisingly wonderful views to the rear of the property.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the comfy coffee lounge overlooking the superb gardens and fi elds in the valley below. The restaurant is light and airy, and offers spectacular vistas. I decided to order from the à la carte menu while my companion chose from the reasonably priced specials. To start, I chose scallops accompanied by delicious crispy Parma ham and pea purée while my partner revelled in a more local dish of delicious, warm Stilton cheesecake with tomato chutney. My main choice of balsamic-glazed sirloin with crumbled Stilton was utterly delectable. My companion settled on teriyaki chicken teamed with creamy coleslaw, homemade salsa and crispy sweet potato chips. The homemade fruity meringue roulade served as the perfect ending to my meal, while my partner went for the locally produced cheeseboard.

We retired to the coffee lounge to relax before a quick tour of the

private dining rooms, which can seat up to 48 people. Guests can opt to stay overnight in one of the 30 individually decorated bedrooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and can see why it’s a fi rm favourite among locals and visitors alike.

So far, so fabulous, and we hadn’t even reached our table yet. pineapple and peanut butter – unlikely elements that complemented each other perfectly. RuFirst-rate food goes hand-in-hand with a vibrant atmosphere at Don Paddy’s. This is the beating heart of Uppingham, and was filled to the rafters on our weeknight visit, abuzz with excited chatter and free-flowing wine. Visit in the morning and you’ll find a charming coffee shop offering cappuccinos and home-baked cakes and scones alongside breakfasts; by night the Champagne bottle-lined bar is alive with joyful locals. The extensive menu offers a selection of comforting favourites, including locally sourced steaks, hearty burgers and a range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. We started with the perfectly executed scallop linguine with bacon and chives, and creamy goat’s cheese rolled in hazelnuts on a fresh poached pear salad. My main course was a succulent and satisfying shoulder of lamb, mouth-wateringly tender and served with heavenly honey-roast parsnips. For dessert, we delved into a decadent Grand Marnier-laced crème brûlée, and a deliciously rich white chocolate and pistachio cheesecake. Top-brass rugby, cricket and football

memorabilia gives the place an air of sporting triumph: a shirt signed by the 2007 England Rugby World Cup team hung beside our table, and the restaurant’s support of local sports players is a warming touch in an eatery which clearly takes pride in its small but mighty county. There’s always an event happening at Don Paddy’s, including live music. Currently, manager Benoit holds a French night, offering two delicious courses followed by a subtitled film in the classy private dining room upstairs.

For a heartier option, the ever-changing specials board offers a variety of favourites like steak and ale pie served with home-grown vegetables and buttery mashed potatoes. I couldn’t resist the pan-fried plaice, drizzled in a rich and creamy sauce, and accompanied by new potatoes and crispy kale. The beautiful oak-framed

restaurant with fl oor-to-ceiling windows opens out onto a walled courtyard terrace; it’s the perfect place to unwind with Farndon’s popular afternoon tea on a sunny day.

It’s easy to lose yourself for a few hours, relaxing in the restaurant, browsing the farm shop and stocking up on delicious treats from the deli. With a menu that changes throughout the seasons, there’s always something new to try.

HBWarm, friendly and full of surprises, The Bull is among that rare breed of pubs that serves remarkable food while resolutely retaining the real heart and soul of an affable pub. We entered to gales of laughter and a cracking atmosphere: cosy chats between couples, catch-ups with friends, family gatherings – it was all going on. On our table was a lip-tingling portion of butter with red and green chillies, ready to be spread over fresh bread, while gilt mirrors, fragrant lilies and flock wallpaper made for stylish surrounds. We started with fl avoursome English lamb pakoras with tamarind and mint dahi, mint yoghurt and pickled mooli. Next came slow-braised ox cheek and porcini mushroom tortellini, served with merguez sausage and a beef marrow and tomato ragu. Dessert comprised a perfectly presented rhubarb and custard cheese cake with white chocolate ice cream. At The Bull, it’s all about serious food in a fun atmosphere – what could be better?

This is best demonstrated by the unique beer that they have created – Rood Awakening, named after the nearby Holy Rood Church, is their own-recipe bitter, brewed for them by Marston’s. RuThis traditional country pub is ideally situated for visitors to this picturesque region, with Stamford just a short drive away. Sympathetic changes have been made to the interior, but the charming original features remain. Both the bar and restaurant are traditional and rustic, the orangery is bright and airy, and the snug is a cosy and intimate space for private dining for up to 12 guests.

The menu offers a mix of comforting British classics and favourites with a contemporary touch. We both began with a warming bowl of French onion soup with a Gruyère crouton. Next, I opted for an open steak sandwich, a first-rate version of this favourite dish, featuring perfectly succulent steak, crispy tempura onion rings and homemade bloomer bread, served with hand-cut chips and grainy mustard. My companion enthused over his rack of lamb served beautifully pink, with crispy bean and bacon rolls and a red wine and rosemary jus. We couldn’t resist sampling something from the luscious list of sweets, and the baked New York-style cheesecake with Yorkshire rhubarb was divine.

The Sunday roasts looked very inviting, particularly the whole roast chicken, which will feed four and is brought to your table for you to carve yourself – a great idea for a sociable lunch.

RuThe Vaults is an historic 17th-century inn situated in the heart of the award-winning town of Uppingham, on the bustling market square. As you enter the Grade II listed building, the oak-panelled bar makes for a warm welcome thanks to the wide selection of cask ale and lager available, including local brews produced in Rutland.

Incorporating exposed beams and wood-burning fi res, the cosy restaurant serves a tantalising selection of pub classics alongside regularly changing specials, which feature starters such as smoked salmon and cream cheese parcels with Melba toast. My partner’s main course did not disappoint. The pan-seared pork fi llet was sumptuously tender and was accompanied by sautéed potatoes and a creamy leek, wild mushroom and mustard sauce. I opted for the locally sourced 8oz rump steak, which was cooked on the grill, resulting in perfectly succulent meat that went well with

the generous selection of sides, including chunky chips, crispy onion rings and juicy grilled tomatoes. Fully satisfi ed but unable to resist the desserts, we chose the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake paired with vanilla ice cream and raspberry coulis. It was decadently moreish and left a lasting impression.

In the warmer months, the outdoor benches provide a pleasant spot where you can relax and people-watch. Keep an eye out for regular events throughout the year, including live music.

LeDating back to 1720, The Globe is a pub with a colourful history. A one-time cattle merchant, and formerly the last stop for women on their way to the hangman’s noose, The Globe is now a place that begs exploration – just watch out for the odd spirit claimed to haunt the premises.

Ghostly apparitions aside, there couldn’t be a more welcoming atmosphere than that of The Globe. Fine food, fine wine and fine ales are the watchwords here; indeed, The Globe has a history of brewing, boasting a well beneath the pub that once supplied the spring water for an on-site brewery. The wine list is extensive and well worth examination when you have an evening to spare.

The menu offers a range of traditional pub classics alongside burgers, sandwiches and daily specials. We recommend beer-battered fish and chips, and toad in the hole made with Lincolnshire sausages, all washed down with several

pints of the well-conditioned guest ale. Speaking of which, the guest ales change weekly, so it’s always worth nipping in to see what’s on to make sure you don’t miss out.

To top it all off, The Globe offers a large function room upstairs with a private bar, large screen and projector for meetings, ideal should you return with friends or colleagues. All you need now is an excuse to book a party.

The team takes great pride in the Sunday roast, which has gained a reputation as one of the best in the area. Particularly delicious is the topside of mature British beef – pan-seared before roasted with red wine, rosemary, sage and thyme – with an English mustard and cracked black pepper glaze. Other tempting options include leg of Welsh lamb, roasted with garlic and rosemary with a redcurrant jelly glaze, and breast of English turkey with tarragon and garlic butter. Despite being of the highest quality, this Sunday lunch won’t put a strain on your wallet. The excellent value becomes even more impressive when you dine before 1pm, as the early bird offer means that meals are 20-per-cent cheaper. The restaurant

also has a great range of vegetarian and vegan dishes, ensuring that everyone is catered for.

RuSituated in the pretty village of Braunston near the historic church, a trickling stream and picture-perfect thatched cottages, you’ll fi nd The Old Plough. Inside this cosy local you’ll discover dark beams, horse brasses and a cheerful hubbub rising from the bar. All is not quite as traditional as it seems, as landlord and chef Matt Howard has quite literally travelled the seven seas, honing his culinary skills on cruise ships and in kitchens around the globe, and he’s brought his adventuring home. We tried the sticky Korean chicken wings coated with sesame, followed by an intriguing and delicious coffee- and cocoa-covered steak. For summer, there are plans for a Korean-style barbecue in the garden, and on New Year’s Eve, Matt whipped up the fi ve courses that were originally served in the Titanic’s fi rst-class dining salon. At The Old Plough, the charm and comfort of a traditional pub marries perfectly with inventive cuisine.

John has always had an avid interest in food, and after moving to London to work with the likes of Marcus Wareing and Claude Bosi, he has now returned to his family farm in Mountsorrel where he produces exciting, modern British dishes at his glorious restaurant, John’s House. John loves exploring new flavours and textures, especially in springtime when seasonal ingredients mean dishes become lighter and fresher. His top cooking tip is to always use ingredients when they are in season for the best fl avours. Asparagus is a particular favourite, simply grilled with lemon and butter.Just nine months after opening, John’s House was awarded its first Michelin star, and it has recently been named Leicestershire Restaurant of the Year – a testament to the talent and determination of John and his dedicated team.

Vincenzo Della Pietra creates dishes that showcase modern techniques while appreciating traditions of the past. After starting his career in Italy, Vincenzo then trained under award-winning chef Matt Moran at the Aria in Sydney harbour. The quality and provenance of ingredients has always been important to Vincenzo and he loves the fact that he’s surrounded by the Leicestershire countryside where he can source the fi nest, seasonal produce from local farmers. Vincenzo particularly enjoys the summer for its abundance of seasonal ingredients, allowing him to create beautifully fresh and colourful dishes. His favourite ingredient is beetroot, owing to its unique taste and adaptability, which makes it perfect for starters through to desserts. According to Vincenzo, good food is when quality meets simplicity and passion, and his passion is certainly evident in each dish he produces at Poacher’s.

The Gate Hangs Well’s name may hark back to ye olde pubs of yesteryear, but there’s nothing old-fashioned about this recently refurbished hostelry. A considerable sum has been spent on updating the traditional building, making today’s Gate a destination that boasts a comfortable bar and lounge, children’s play area, modern function suite, a very smart and cosy restaurant and a convenient, large car park. The menu here comprises a wide range of traditional meals, with everything made and presented in the style of good-old home cooking. My pick of the starters was the black pudding wrapped in bacon and topped with a poached egg, while my partner willingly received the button mushrooms in creamy Stilton sauce. From the many tempting main courses on offer, we chose two of the heartiest. Liver and onion never fails to satisfy, and my partner’s huge portion came with lots of mashed potato that absorbed the delicious juices, while my lamb shank was

accompanied by a mountain of vegetables and surrounded by rich gravy. Our generous portions of apple strudel, one with ice cream and one with custard, were also delicious. Whether for an evening dinner for two such as we enjoyed, a family Sunday lunch or even that big celebration, The Gate Hangs Well is a pleasant country pub deserving of your patronage.

After being inspired at the age of five to become a chef, Brian Baker has come a long way, building up an enviable list of achievements. Having cooked for Diana, Princess of Wales, and Sir Elton John in the past, Brian now creates bold yet unfussy dishes with his signature style at The Marquess of Exeter. Using the best of Rutland’s outstanding produce, Brian creates food for the soul. For him, nothing beats seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces as they tuck into a delicious meal. When summer comes around, he enjoys using locally grown Manton strawberries in everything from salads to cocktails. Brian and his team have an extraordinary talent for creating flavoursome, seasonal dishes, something that has earned the restaurant numerous accolades over the years, including the title of Rutland Pride Restaurant of the Year in 2015.

Having always had a passion for cooking, Rory earned his stripes working under Michelin-starred greats such as Angela Hartnett, Jason Atherton and Marcus Wareing. Now, Rory creates incredible, contemporary British food at his AA-rosette-awarded pub, The White Swan. Rory loves working in a stimulating environment where every day brings a new challenge, and where he and colleagues Chris and James get to let loose their creativity in the kitchen to develop menus and experiment with new dishes. His menu is very much quality led, and incorporates the fi nest produce from Leicestershire’s natural larder. According to Rory, anything that makes you want to eat it again as soon as you possibly can is what makes good food. This ethos is certainly evident in the dishes served at The White Swan, where each morsel entices you back for more.
