Main St, Ionia Movies ~ Rentals 616-527-3350 In our first reading this weekend, Amos is very upset and writing about people who are doing well materially, but not spiritually. They have turned away from God and resent the Sabbath, which forbade work. More than that, they have been cheating to increase their profits. Amos isn’t shy about telling God’s people how He despises their dishones- ty. This will leave us a little confused about the Gospel reading. It sounds like the Lord is approving the dishonest steward! Fired by the owner, he calls in various debtors and writes up reduced bills. Then they would be indebted to him. Some Biblical commentators suggest the dishonest steward was eliminating any commission that would have been due to him. Whatever the reason, his dishonesty was- n’t grand larceny or he would have been worried about jail rather than digging or begging for a living. The point of the parable Jesus is telling isn’t the dishonesty of the steward, but that people work very hard at providing for their well- being in this life. How hard or dedicated are we in providing for our spiritual well-being? Let us consider just two things….time and money. How many times have you heard someone say, “If I just had some more time to….?” The truth of the matter is, we all have the same amount of time…24 hours. It isn’t a question of time. It is how we use the time that we have. The secret of “finding more time” is good time management. The se- cret of good time management is setting priorities. One of my complaints was always, “I need more time to pray.” When I put prayer at the top of my list, I never have any problems with prayer. It isn’t always the first thing I get done, but there is always time for more prayer. The other issue is money. Do we need it? Of course. But too often we equate it with happiness and/or power. But acquiring more money can easily lead to it controlling our lives. Jesus wants us to use it wisely, but not let it become our master. One way of keeping it in check is to tithe. Think of what the Lord means when he says, “Make friends for yourselves with wicked money, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into heaven.” Jesus calls us “children of the light.” This means we have to provide for our spiritual lives just as seriously as unbelievers provide for their mate- rial lives. In other words “Be smart!” And we are being smart when we realize this life is only temporary but the next one will last forever! May God bless all you are doing! Fr. Twenty-fifth Sunday in ordinary time

Spiritual Adoption—Week 21 “Yum Yum!” Your baby’s taste buds have matured enough that he or she can now react to sweet, sour, and bitter tastes. Tipping the scales at about one pound, this little bundle of joy is roughly the size of a loaf of bread (8”). Due to advances in medical tech-nology, babies born at this age have survived. Thank you for your prayers for this child’s survival!

The annual Ionia Area CROP Hunger Walk is Sunday, Oc-tober 6, beginning at the Ionia County Commission on Ag-ing. If you would like to walk, please call Pat Rinker at 517-898-5676 for materials. If you won’t be able to walk with us this year, please donate what you can to feed the hungry among us. (Checks should be made payable to CWS/CROP Walk and sent to the parish office.)

“Healing Our Church” Discussion Groups Please consider an opportunity to come together for six weeks in small groups with fellow parishioners to pray and reflect on the clergy abuse crisis and to en-vision a path forward as a Roman Catholic family of faith. RENEW International, a Catholic nonprofit or-ganization, has designed this healing process. Sign-ups will take place the weekends of September 21/22 and 28/29 at all the English Masses.

Grief Support Group Sessions The Ministry of Consolation invites anyone who has suf-fered the death of a loved one or a loss in their personal life to join them at weekly Grief Support Group Sessions. The first of six sessions for this series will be held in the SS. Peter & Paul Parish Office living room on Thursday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m. Each session offers a topic of discussion, as well as time to reflect, listen, and share if one chooses. For more information, please contact Vanessa Booth at [email protected] or leave a message with the Parish Office at 527-3610.

Wedding Anniversary Mass Bishop David Walkowiak invites all couples celebrat-ing milestone anniversaries, together with their fami-lies and friends, to join him on Sunday, October 13, at the 10 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of St. Andrew. A simple reception will follow. Please call the SSPP parish office if you plan to attend.

Youth Group returns! How did Christ impact your life this summer? Stu-dents in Grades 8 through 12, come to Youth Group on Sunday, September 22nd, at 6 p.m. in Apostles Hall and share your summer experiences. Bring a friend. See you there!

Wanted: Prayer Leaders for October, Month of the Holy Rosary

Would you like to help lead the Rosary before weekend Masses in October? Please contact Toni McKay to be scheduled.

Aquinas College Open House Aquinas College invites all high school students and their families to attend one of its Fall Open Houses on Saturday, October 5, or Saturday, November 2. Choose your own path through sessions throughout the day as you get the inside scoop on academics, athletics, service learning, study abroad, and more! Details and registration information can be found at aquinas.edu/openhouse.

Cancer Support Group This group allows persons touched by cancer to gain insight and support, pray for one another, and share in a warm and understanding environ-ment Those with cancer, survivors, and caregivers are all welcome. The group meets every other Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Par-ish Office living room. Our next gathering is Sep-tember 25.

Mass to Honor Health Care Workers Join Bishop Walkowiak on Sunday, October 20, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrew as we honor all those who work in health care – from nurses and physicians to lab techs and environmental service workers. Health care workers and caregivers from all faiths are welcome and all are encouraged to wear their working uniform. A reception will follow Mass.

The White Mass - named for the white coats of phy-sicians - is traditionally celebrated on the Feast of Saint Luke, the patron saint of physicians.

Marian Hymn Some people have asked about the Mary song from last week. It is “Holy Is His Name” by John Michael Talbot. Happy listening! --Whitney

A Blessing! These dedicated choir members attended the Blessing of Musicians Mass at the Cathedral of St. Andrew on Tues-day, September 17.

STEWARDSHIP: VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHTS

Miguel Pilar is an SSPP pa-rishioner and a junior at Lake-wood High School. Miguel is president of his class and is involved in three of four choirs offered at LHS. At Saints Peter and Paul, Miguel is involved in the youth group, choir, and serves on the Pastoral Coun-cil and Stewardship Commit-tee. Miguel is passionate about helping to promote interaction

between the English and Hispanic communities and to devise a way to create a bilingual bulletin. He feels strong-ly that our parish function as one community, not two, and that we should diligently work toward bridging these two groups. Miguel believes this bulletin would allow all parish-ioners to stay up-to-date and informed of what's going on in all areas of life in our parish, and to ultimately become a more closely united parish. Our Parish Purpose Statement - Saints Peter & Paul Parish

Our Pastoral Council has been working intensely with Father Tom to develop a Pastoral Plan for our parish. Parish Pastoral Planning is a prayerful and participative process through which a parish characterizes itself as a particular community of faith by developing its own purpose statement, assessing its strengths and resources, as well as its limitations and needs. All of this leads to making recommendations to the pastor concerning establishment of priorities and goals, and devising ways to accomplish its mission. Parish Pastoral Planning helps to answer the questions: Who are we as a parish? What are we called to do? How are we best going to do it? All of us are called to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. The mission of the Church is rooted in the mission of Christ who commanded everyone - clergy, religious, and laity - to "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15). From its earliest days the Church has responded to this mission in various ways depending upon the times and circumstances. Creating this statement of our parish’s purpose was a great challenge. The council could have simply quoted the parish purpose from the great commission of Matthew 28: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Jesus’ commission rings loud, yet there is great need in the world for the Catholic faithful to be moved to a renewed zest for the gospel, both personally and in sharing it with others. By establishing a purpose statement for our parish, the council hopes to eliminate any question as to our parish’s sacred purpose, and to ensure that the work of the parish, in all its forms, is directed toward this purpose. Our parish purpose statement: Our sacred purpose as Saints Peter and Paul Parish is to . . . use our God-given gifts . . .

Every parishioner is called upon to exercise the divinely-inspired calling and gifts conferred in Baptism for a particular function in carrying out the mission of Jesus Christ.

to awaken faith, inspire discipleship, and trust in God’s plan . . . Being a member of Saints Peter & Paul Parish is not only aimed at one’s personal sanctity. We are called to bring Christ out into the world, wherever our journey takes us, to affect the sanctity of all people. Each of us is to exude our Catholic faith as to rouse faith in others, to be an example of Christian discipleship, and to exemplify trust in God’s divine plan in all things.

so that all who enter our doors may receive, believe, and share God’s love. Whether one “enters our doors” by simply coming into contact with a parish member, or physically passes through the doors of our church building, our purpose is the same: To stir the hearts of people, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to become open to receive all the Lord unconditionally offers to every person, to attain certainty in the Gospel message, and to share in God’s love by embracing his love personally and becoming a vessel in bringing his love to others.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank you for always being

present to us in the Church which you gave as the means

for our salvation and that of the whole world. A Church

through which life-giving and sustaining graces are

poured into and over us by the holy Sacraments. A

Church which is truly your “body” here on earth. We are

members of that body, filled with the Holy Spirit and

bountiful graces, and compelled to use the blessings,

gifts, and favors which have been given us to build up

that body.

Renew us with your grace and the gifts of the Holy

Spirit that we may give serious thought to how each of us

can better use our time, talent, and treasure to build up

your Church and to love better our brothers and sisters

who make up your holy Church.

May the Parish of SS. Peter and Paul continue to be a

community of believers who are willing to spend time

learning about God’s Word and will, about the words and

works of Holy men and women who have loved

Jesus and his Church, and may we then serve one another

and our fellow human beings, in showing

them God and his Holy Church.

This we pray, dear Father, through our

Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns

with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one

God for ever and ever. Amen.

The Stewardship Campaign Prayer was written by

a Saints Peter and Paul Parishioner.
