1. That this House notes: ·

(a) the passing of Major General Gordon Lindsay Maitland on 18 October 2018,

(b) that Major General Gordon Lindsay Maitland AO OBE RFD ED (1926 - 2018) was born in Rockdale on 25 August 1926,

( c) he was aged just 1 7 when he enlisted in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War,

(d) Major General Maitland was a member of the Allied Translator and Interpreter Service within Timor Force, supervising compliance with surrender terms, and locating and questioning possible war criminals across the Netherlands East Indies islands ofSoemba, Soembawa and Flores,

( e) in the immediate post-war period, he was principal interpreter at the Darwin War Crimes Trials and later saw overseas service in Papua New Guinea and Vietnam; later in his Army career he served as Chief of Reserves at Army Headquarters and as a member of the Chief of Army's Advisory Council,

(f) General Maitland holds the distinction to be the only Private to have attained the rank of Major General and to be appointed to the Chief of Army's Advisory Council,

(g) he also had a distinguished civilian career as CEO of The Royal Agricultural Society; member of Government committees; and Chief Manager of the Commonwealth Bank,

(h) for the last 30 odd years of his life he was devoted to commemorative and community activities, particularly assisting veterans and their organisations, a. nl.1111ber of which he has led; he also had a lifelong dedication to military history, publishing six books on the topic, and

a (i) that his appreciable influence on organisations such as Sydney's Dawn Service, Defence Reserves Association, Sydney Legacy, the Army Museum, and the Royal United Services Institute will be enduring, and he was a long time champion and supporter of the Battle for Australia Association.

2. This House passes its condolences to the family and friends of Major General Gordon Lindsay Maitland AO OBE RFD ED.

(a) Nobel Memorial Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has warned Australia that its future prosperity is at risk if it continues its dependence on fossil fuels;

(b) Professor Stiglitz told the ABC that successful countries are those who are going to make a rapid transition from the fossil fuel economy to the innovation economy;

( c) The Professor highlighted the undue influence of special interests in politicising climate change. He said, (quote) "Coal [ and] oil companies have an economic interest in trying to persuade people that it [climate change] is hokum, that it's a liberal conspiracy. It's not!".

That this House notes the numbers NSW is likely to suffer economically if it continues to rely on coal and fails to transition the NSW economy towards 100% renewable energy.

( c) the awards aim to inspire communities to strengthen their capabilities so they may withstand and recover from natural disasters into the future,

(d) Warrimoo Public School won the Schools category for their Bush Fire Ready program that develops student knowledge and skills in fire safety,

(e) Warrimoo was devastated by bushfires in November 2014 and 100 children from Warrimoo Public School were evacuated to safety on that occasion, and

(f) Warrimoo Public School was of course supported by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service,

(a) on 29 September 2018 the NSW Police Force and the New South Wales community acknowledged National Police Remembrance Day, an annual event that commemorates the service and sacrifice of members of the NSW Police Force who have lost their lives in the line of duty,

this day is of great importance to so many and is also a time to remember police officers who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances, and

each year, 29 September holds significance for police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands to honour officers whose lives have been lost while performing their duty as a police officer. "s

2. That this House acknowledges:

(a) the great service of all members of the NSW Police Force in supporting and protecting our community,

(a) On 11 October 2018 the NSW Women's Alliance launched A Safe State, a comprehensive policy platform for preventing and responding to Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence;

(b) The NSW Women's Alliance is a group ofNSW peak organisations and state­wide service providers working within the sexual violence and domestic and family violence field and is co-convened by Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia and Domestic Violence NSW;

(c) The platform has 49 key recommendations for funding, law and policy change including: i. An independent statutory body for the primary prevention of gender-based

violence ii. Gender-based violence to be a key priority in NSW secondary schools

iii. Decriminalise abortion iv. an additional $310 million over four years for specialists domestic and

family vio Jenee services · v. development of a specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led strategy

to prevent violence; vi. an additional $1. 7 million per year in funding for the NSW Rape Crisis

Centre; vii. an additional $25.86 million per year in funding for specialist women's

legal services and community legal centres; and viii. improved training for NSW Police Officers on how to respond

appropriately to sexual, domestic and family violence.

(a) the 2018 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, Northern Beaches Region, was held on Friday 24 August 2018, in recognition of the outstanding contribution to volunteering in New South Wales of volunteers from across the Northern Beaches,

(b) the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards is an annual event launched in 2007 by The Centre for Volunteering to recognise the 2 million plus volunteers in New South Wales, and to promote the importance of volunteering to the community,

(c) these awards are the biggest celebration of volunteering across the country, and together with many other volunteers from across the state, the Northern Beaches community was acknowledged for their enormous contribution to the local community, and

(d) Northern Beaches community volunteers were acknowledged for their support across a broad range of areas including: hospitals, sporting clubs, helping in schools, the environment and with many community based organisations.

(a) on Thursday 2 August 2018 the Consulate-General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney hosted the Exhibition Opening of Polish-Australian artist Basia Zielinksa's works,! entitled "Basia Zielinska, Solo Painting Exhibition -Landscapes Dialogues" at the Polish Consulate in Woollahra which was attended by members and friends of the Polish-Australian community,

(b) the exhibition opening was organised to promote Polish artists or artists with Polish heritage in Australia,

(c) Polish-Australian artist Basia Zielinska is an abstract artist, responding intuitively to fragments of memories and fleeting images of her internal and external landscape and she spent much of her early childhood in displaced persons camps in the United Kingdom following the Second World War,

( d) after a successful career teaching decorative art both in Australia and overseas, Basia was able to make a strong commitment to her personal art practice and she has been selected for numerous art awards, including as finalist in the North Sydney Art Prize, Hunters Hill Art Prize and the Fischer's Ghost Art Prize and recently won 'The Friends Choice' award at the Friends of Campbelltown Exhibition,

( e) those who attended the event included: (i) Ms Marta Kiec-Gubala from the Polish Consulate-General, Sydney, (ii) Ms Dorota Preda, who opened the Exhibition on behalf of the Polish

( c) the Lambton Park Gates are of historical importance in recognition of the 140 men from Lambton that enlisted and died in World War I and also list the names of 30 ladies who fundraised to have them erected,

( d) the Gates are considered rare as they may be the only gates constructed with a Time Capsule and are of significance due to their link to Thomas Croudace (founder of the Park), the late Honourable J. Estell, former local MP, EO Yeoman (Architect), E. Charlton, Mayor of Lambton and inaugurator of the movement to erect the gates,

(e) in Lambton, when their men were away at the Front, their mothers, sisters and wives put energy into fundraising to build a Memorial Gate for their men, and under the Foundation Stone of the gates, a Time Capsule was· buried on 19 October 1918,

(f) in 1917, the Gates were designed by Eric Yeomans, and the Ladies' Send-off and Welcome Home Committee began fundraising activities, including bazaars, dances, operettas, concerts and euchre partie$,

(g) the Foundation Stone was laid on October 19, 1918 by Mr J. Estell, MLA for Wallsend with all the mayors from the Newcastle District attending,

(h) following extensive research, it is believed that this is the only WWI time capsule whose location and burial date are known, making its unearthing of potentially national significance,

(i) the pillars and gates were completed in April 1919, the event was celebrated by the second major fundraiser, being a Gala Day in the park, and the keys were handed over to the Lambton Council by the Ladies on 9 December 1919, and

G} the event was commemorated by issuing a Commemorative Coin to the children attending from local primary schools and daycares in Lambton, with the coins donated by the Hunter Development Corporation.

2. That this House:

(a) acknowledges the 100 year Anniversary since the stone foundation of the gates were laid along with a time capsule buried in 1918, and
