RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 13 Term: 3 Monday 26 th 2019 Youth Awareness of Mental Health (YAMHs) The Department of Education is working with the Black Dog Institute to run a school-based peer support and mental health literacy program called Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAMHs). We have been fortunate to have the team from YAMHs in our school over the last two weeks to work with our students addressing the mental health needs of young people. The sessions delivered in this program are: What is mental health? Self-help advice Stress and crisis Depression and suicidal thoughts Helping a friend in need? Who can I ask for advice? Students in Years 9 and 10 will undertake the closing session of the YAMHs program this week. Feedback from presenters has been excellent with all commenting on how engaged and receptive our students have been. Amber is also on her way to the State Finals for School Based Apprentice of the Year after winning the Riverina round earlier this year. Best wishes to Amber for the next phase later in the year. Positive Behaviour for Learning Our PBL focus for this fortnight is on positive lifestyles. We will be learning about the importance of deep breathing as a calming, mindfulness exercise. Mindfulness can be defined as “paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment without judgement.” Practicing mindfulness is useful for remaining grounded, calm and relaxed in stressful situations and follows on from last fortnights focus. Students and teachers will also discuss “Emotional Literacy” which is the term used to describe the ability to understand and express feelings. Emotional Literacy involves having self-awareness and recognising one's own feelings and knowing how to manage them, such as the ability to stay calm when angered or to reassure oneself when in doubt. At the end of the fortnight we will experiment with ‘Patterned Repetitive Repeats’ which refers to rhythm patterns – whether that be in music, written or spoken word, or movement. The use of rhythm is another handy strategy that is a proven wellbeing support. Our next round of PBL prize draws will be at the end of Weeks 6 and 9 with a mega prize at the end of the term. Alternately, students can drop 25 PBL tickets in to the office for a merit certificate to go toward earning a Platinum Jacket. Youth Awareness of Mental Health (YAMHs) The Department of Education is working with the Black Dog Institute to run a school-based peer support and mental health literacy program called Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAMHs). We have been fortunate to have the team from YAMHs in our school over the last two weeks to work with our students addressing the mental health needs of young people. The sessions delivered in this program are:

What is mental health?

Self-help advice

Stress and crisis

Depression and suicidal thoughts

Helping a friend in need?

Who can I ask for advice?

Students in Years 9 and 10 will undertake the closing session of the YAMHs program this week. Feedback from presenters has been excellent with all commenting on how engaged and receptive our students have been. Amber Parr in Year 12 Amber represented our school at the Riverina Skills Conference held at Charles Sturt University in Wagga where she delivered a speech on her School Based Traineeship journey so far. Amber is also on her way to the State Finals for School Based Apprentice of the Year after winning the Riverina round earlier this year. Best wishes to Amber for the next phase later in the year.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our PBL focus for this fortnight is on positive lifestyles.

Year 7 2020

Please return Year 7 2020 enrolment forms to the office by 30th August, 2019. Thank you to all parents/carers who have already done so. We also have a quick survey for parents/carers and Year 6 students on our Facebook page for feedback so we can continue to improve our Year 6 into 7 Transition Program.

~~DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING~~ Leeton High School has recently committed to new initiatives which seek to develop the capacity of our staff to deliver great learning outcomes for our students. Recently, four staff members at Leeton High School: Damian Bush, Renee Arena, Nadine Goring and Daniel McKenzie, attended a Leading Secondary Numeracy professional learning workshop in Narrandera. This day was 1 of 5 that will be attended by the mentioned team over the course of the next 6 months. One of the main focuses of the day was working with and reflecting on the document ‘What Works Best’. This document is an authoritative and extensively referenced piece of work produced by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation. The ‘What Works Best’ title is referenced to seven themes from a growing bank of evidence for what works best to improve student educational outcomes. There are many things that we as educators can focus on, but if we are to focus our efforts and resources of things that have a bigger impact on learning outcomes, than other less effective things, we are confident that we will add more value to student outcomes than otherwise. A second initiative that the school is pursuing Term 4 and beyond is the creation of Professional Learning Communities (PLC), which complements the school’s existing professional learning agenda. A PLC at Leeton High School will involve collaboration, sharing and ongoing critical interrogation of teaching practices in line with professional standards. The question arises, why the move in this direction? Evidence from our professional body, Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership finds that PLCs are more effective than individual champions in ensuring that school-wide teaching changes are sustainable. Furthermore, they help develop teachers’ confidence and self-efficacy along with encouraging and developing effective leadership and management at all levels of the school. More importantly, and the reason for this pivot is that students achieve at higher levels in schools with positive PLCs. I can confidently say that the two aforementioned initiatives that the school is embarking on is aligned with best practice. I say this because a small team of educators at Leeton High School, including Lewanna Kenton, Meagan Crelley, Naomi Butler, Simone Crossley, Jaimie-Lee Northey and myself went through a thorough and robust process over the last 6 months of self-reflection against the School Excellence Framework. The school was required to collect evidence in the areas of: Learning, Teaching and Leading and to then assess whether, based on the evidence that was collected, the school was either - Developing, Sustaining and Growing or Excelling. The document, which totals 106 pages, is in the final stages of being finalised and submitted. On 12 September two experienced practitioners from the Department of Education will visit the school to inspect the final document. From there we can celebrate areas of success, but also focus our efforts on where processes and practices can be improved upon to ensure the provision of high quality educational opportunities for each and every child.
