Back To School TeambuildingThis year’s theme for Bishopville Primary is: One Mission, One Goal, One TEAM! On August 14th, the staff of BPS embraced this theme by partnering with Design on Wheels of Columbia to create a 40 canvas mural for the school. This project was designed to send a welcome message to the students of BPS and the 40 canvases fit together to form one mural that will be mounted for all students to see and enjoy.

“Suit Up and Show Up!” For the first day of school, men from the community were invited to come dressed in suits to greet BPS students and parents! Afterwards the men were invited to enjoy a catered breakfast with the Principal Lamont Moore, Assistant Principal Benjamin Washington, and Family Community Liaison Paris Davis. Students and parents were delighted to see many of their local pastors and community leaders on the first day back at BPS.

S.O.A.R. Assemblies! BPS Thunderbirds participated in school-wide assemblies at the end of the first week of school to kick off the implementation of the school-wide behavior process Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). The students learned the school expectations using the acronym S.O.A.R. which stands for being Successful, Orderly, Achieving and Respectful. During the assemblies, the students showcased banners, chants, cheers, songs and dances that they created to demonstrate their understanding of S.O.A.R.

LOWER LEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The 2017-18 school year is off to a great start! Lower Lee Elementary parents came out to our "Meet the Teacher" and had an opportunity to meet the principal, their child's teacher, staff members and to tour our school. Also, many families participated in the "Back to School Bash." The turnout for these events was impressive! These social events help build family connections with our school throughout the year, and we are excited about the partnerships. This month we also hosted our "Grits for Grands" breakfast. We were excited to invite our grandparents to participate, and allow grandparents to see how they can become involved at our school.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects people of many racial and ethnic groups. In the United States, 90,000 to 100,000 people―mainly Blacks or African Americans―have SCD. The disease occurs among about 1 of every 500 Black or African-American births and among about 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic-American births. Other people affected include those of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian origin. In addition, more than 2 million people carry the sickle cell gene that allows them potentially to pass the disease on to their children.

Among those with SCD, their red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a "sickle". The sickle-shaped cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. When a person doesn't have enough red blood cells, they have a

condition called anemia. Also, when these misshaped blood cells travel through small blood vessels, they can get stuck and clog the blood flow. Whenever this happens, it results in severe pain and organ damage and can cause serious infections.

People with SCD can live productive lives and enjoy most of the activities that people without SCD do. These are some things that people with SCD can do to stay as healthy as possible:

Get regular checkups. Regular health checkups with a primary care doctor can help prevent some serious problems.

Prevent infections .  Common illnesses, like influenza quickly can become dangerous for a child with SCD. The best defense is to take simple steps to help prevent infections.

Learn healthy habits. People with SCD should drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day and eat healthy food. They also should try not to get too hot, too cold, or too tired.

Look for clinical studies. New clinical research studies are happening all the time to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for SCD. People who take part in these studies might have access to new medicines and treatments.

Get support. People with SCD should find a patient support group or other organization in the community that can provide information, assistance, and support.
