The importance of Money

• The wealth in the material world is not the same as the wealth for the spiritual life.

• You need wealth in this life to live.

• Wealth is a product of our Karma

• Because of our Mat we think that we make the wealth and as a result we take more than we need.

• When we take more than we need we are greedy.

• With Greed we become a fool because none of this will go with us this is a result of the mind being made out of the five elements.

Here is the problem with the money

ਆਥਿ ਸੈਲ ਨੀਚ ਘਥਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

If wealth visits the home of the lowliest clown,

ਆਥਿ ਦੇਥਿ ਥਨਵੈ ਥਿਸੁ ਦੋਇ ॥

seeing that wealth, all pay their respects to him.

ਆਥਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਥਸਆਨਾ ॥

Even an idiot is thought of as clever, if he is rich.

ਭਗਥਤ ਥਿਹੂਨਾ ਿਗ ੁਿਉਿਾਨਾ ॥

Without devotional worship, the world is insane.

Gurmat teaches us how to look at wealth in a healthy way.

Don’t hoard there is enough to go around.

ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਅਨਿਿ ਥਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਿੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥ By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money, ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਥਮਥਲਆ ਹੋਿੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਥਿਿਾਨਾ ॥੩॥ but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3|| ਹੈਵਿ ਗੈਵਿ ਿਿ ਸੰਿਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਥਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਿੇ ॥

He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own.

ਿਿ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਥਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਿੇ ॥੪॥ But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4|| ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਿ ਿਾਿਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper. ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਥਤ ਗੁਥਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਿੈ ਨ ਆਵ ੈਿਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥ The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. ||5||1||8||

How we treat wealth.

ਏਕੈ ਸਰਮੁ ਕਥਿ ਗਾਡੀ ਗਡਹੈ ॥ Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground.

ਏਕਥਹ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਦਾਮੁ ਨ ਛਡਹੈ ॥ Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams.

ਿਾਿੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਕਿੀ ਥਿਥਨ ਿੈਲੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਥਗ ਨ ਚੰਚਥਲ ਚਲੀਆ ॥੨॥ The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2||

ਏਕਥਹ ਪਰਾਣ ਥਪੰਡ ਤੇ ਥਪਆਿੀ ॥ Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life.

ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਥਿ ਿਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਿੀ ॥ Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers.

ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਭਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਗੁਹਿੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਥਨਕਥਟ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਿਲੀਆ ॥੩॥ Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3||

No one found peace from money, tv/ movies or land

ਸੁਿੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਿਹੁਤੈ ਧਥਨ ਿਾਟੇ ॥ There is no peace in earning lots of money.

ਸੁਿੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੇਿੇ ਥਨਿਥਤ ਨਾਟੇ ॥ There is no peace in watching dances and plays.

ਸੁਿੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਿਹੁ ਦੇਸ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ There is no peace in conquering lots of countries.

ਸਿਿ ਸੁਿਾ ਹਥਿ ਹਥਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ All peace comes from singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||

ਸੂਿ ਸਹਿ ਆਨੰਦ ਲਹਹੁ ॥ You shall obtain peace, poise and bliss,

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਥਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਗੁਿਮੁਥਿ ਹਥਿ ਹਥਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥ when you find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, by great good fortune. As Gurmukh, utter the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

Paying money for help wont buy you peace.

ਮਨ ਕੇ ਅੰਧੇ ਆਥਪ ਨ ਿੂਝਹੁ ਕਾਥਹ ਿੁਝਾਵਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ You are blind in your mind, and do not understand your own self; how can you make others understand, O brother?

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਿਨ ਥਿਥਦਆ ਿੇਚਹੁ ਿਨਮੁ ਅਥਿਿਿਾ ਿਾਈ ॥੩॥ For the sake of Maya and money, you sell knowledge; your life is totally worthless. ||3||

ਨਾਿਦ ਿਚਨ ਥਿਆਸੁ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਕ ਕਉ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਿਾਈ ॥ Naarad and Vyaasa say these things; go and ask Suk Dayv as well.

ਕਥਹ ਕਿੀਿ ਿਾਮੈ ਿਥਮ ਛੂਟਹੁ ਨਾਥਹ ਤ ਿੂਡੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥ Says Kabeer, chanting the Lord's Name, you shall be saved; otherwise, you shall drown, brother. ||4||1|

ਘੋਲੀ ਗੇਿੂ ਿੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਵਸਤਰ ਭੇਿ ਭੇਿਾਿੀ ॥ He dyes his robes with saffron dye, and wearing these robes, he goes out begging.

ਕਾਪੜ ਫਾਥਿ ਿਨਾਈ ਥਿੰਿਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਿੀ ॥ Tearing his robes, he makes a patched coat, and puts the money in his wallet.

ਘਥਿ ਘਥਿ ਮਾਗੈ ਿਗੁ ਪਿਿੋਧੈ ਮਥਨ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਥਤ ਹਾਿੀ ॥ From house to house he goes begging, and tries to teach the world; but his mind is blind, and so he loses his honor.

ਭਿਥਮ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਸਿਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਿੂਐ ਿਾਿੀ ਹਾਿੀ ॥੨॥ He is deluded by doubt, and does not remember the Word of the Shabad. He loses his life in the gamble. ||2||

This world is a dream

ਪੁਤਰ ਕਲਤਰ ਉਿਥਝਓ ਿਾਥਨ ਮੇਿੀ ॥ He is so involved with his wife and sons - he believes that they belong to him.

ਓਹ ਥਿਨਸੈ ਓਇ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਿੀ ॥੧॥ That wealth shall pass away, and those relatives shall be reduced to ashes. ||1||

ਥਿਨੁ ਹਥਿ ਭਿਨ ਦੇਿਉ ਥਿਲਲਾਤੇ ॥ Without meditating and vibrating on the Lord, they are crying out in pain.

ਥਧਰਗੁ ਤਨੁ ਥਧਰਗੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਥਗ ਿਾਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥ Their bodies are cursed, and their wealth is cursed - they are imbued with Maya. ||1||Pause||

ਥਿਉ ਥਿਗਾਿੀ ਕੈ ਥਸਥਿ ਦੀਿਥਹ ਦਾਮ ॥ The servant carries the bags of money on his head,

ਓਇ ਿਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਥਗਰਥਹ ਉਨ ਦੂਿ ਸਹਾਮ ॥ but it goes to his master's house, and he receives only pain.

ਥਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਹੋਇ ਿੈਸਤ ਿਾਿਾ ॥ The man sits as a king in his dreams,

ਨੇਤਰ ਪਸਾਿੈ ਤਾ ਥਨਿਾਿਿ ਕਾਿਾ ॥੨॥ but when he opens his eyes, he sees that it was all in vain. ||2|

Nothing is yours.

ਸੁਤ ਿਥਨਤਾ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥ Children, spouse and siblings are not yours.

ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਆਪ ਿਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥ Dear friends, mother and father are not yours. ||2||

ਸੁਇਨਾ ਿਪੂਾ ਫੁਥਨ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਮ ॥ Gold, silver and money are not yours.

ਹੈਵਿ ਗੈਵਿ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥ Fine horses and magnificent elephants are of no use to you. ||3||

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਿੋ ਗੁਥਿ ਿਿਥਸ ਥਮਲਾਇਆ ॥ Says Nanak, those whom the Guru forgives, meet with the Lord.

ਥਤਸ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਥਕਛੁ ਥਿਸ ਕਾ ਹਥਿ ਿਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੩੭॥੧੦੬॥ Everything belongs to those who have the Lord as their King. ||4||37||106||

God is the giver don’t be fooled.

ਪਿੰਦਏ ਨ ਥਗਿਾਹ ਿਿ ॥ The birds have no money in their pockets.

ਦਿਿਤ ਆਿ ਆਸ ਕਿ ॥ They place their hopes on trees and water.

ਥਦਹੰਦ ਸੁਈ ॥ He alone is the Giver.

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੬॥ You alone, Lord, You alone. ||6||

Relationships in Hukum give great joy to us.

ਥਿਉ ਿਨਨੀ ਗਿਭੁ ਪਾਲਤੀ ਸੁਤ ਕੀ ਕਥਿ ਆਸਾ ॥ The mother nourishes the fetus in the womb, hoping for a son,

ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ਧਨੁ ਿਾਥਟ ਦੇਇ ਕਥਿ ਭੋਗ ਥਿਲਾਸਾ ॥ who will grow and earn and give her money to enjoy herself.

ਥਤਉ ਹਥਿ ਿਨ ਪਰੀਥਤ ਹਥਿ ਿਾਿਦਾ ਦੇ ਆਥਪ ਹਿਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ In just the same way Har loves his Servant with his own Hand/ blessing.

ਮੇਿੇ ਿਾਮ ਮੈ ਮੂਿਿ ਹਥਿ ਿਾਿੁ ਮੇਿੇ ਗੁਸਈਆ ॥ O my Lord, I am so foolish; save me, O my Lord God!

ਿਨ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਤੁਝਥਹ ਵਡਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥ Your servant's praise is Your Own Glorious Greatness. ||1||Pause||

How do you purchases this path to God.

ਵਾਥਦ ਅਹੰਕਾਥਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥ Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism. ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਥਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹਲੇਾ ॥ But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained. ਦੂਿੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਥਗਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥ In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4|| ਥਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕ ੇਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥ Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store. ਥਿਨੁ ਿੋਥਹਿ ਸਾਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥ Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean. ਥਿਨੁ ਗੁਿ ਸਵੇੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਥਟ ॥੫॥ Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5||

ਥਤਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਥਿ ਵਾਟ ਥਦਿਾਵੈ ॥ Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.

ਥਤਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਥਿ ਸਿਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥ Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.

ਥਤਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਥਿ ਮੇਥਲ ਥਮਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord's Union. ||6||

How do you buy love for God.

ਸੰਮਨ ਿਉ ਇਸ ਪਰੇਮ ਕੀ ਦਮ ਥਕਯਯਹੁ ਹੋਤੀ ਸਾਟ ॥ O Samman, if one could

buy this love with money,

ਿਾਵਨ ਹੁਤੇ ਸੁ ਿੰਕ ਨਥਹ ਥਿਥਨ ਥਸਿ ਦੀਨੇ ਕਾਥਟ ॥੧॥ then consider Raawan

the king. He was not poor, but he could not buy it, even though he offered his head to Shiva. ||1||

You need Grace.

ਿਾਮ ਿਾਮ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਥਹਐ ਿਾਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ Everyone chants the Lord's Name, Raam, Raam; but by such chanting, the Lord is not obtained.

ਗੁਿ ਪਿਸਾਦੀ ਿਾਮੁ ਮਥਨ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind, and then, the fruits are obtained. ||1||

ਅੰਤਥਿ ਗੋਥਵੰਦ ਥਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਰੀਥਤ ॥ One who enshrines love for God within his mind,

ਹਥਿ ਥਤਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਿੈ ਹਥਿ ਹਥਿ ਕਿਥਹ ਸਦਾ ਮਥਨ ਚੀਥਤ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥ never

forgets the Lord; he continually chants the Lord's Name, Har, Har, in his conscious mind. ||1||Pause||

ਸਗਲ ਸੂਿ ਿਥਪ ਏਕੈ ਨਾਮ ॥

All peace and comforts are in the meditation of the One Name.

ਸਗਲ ਧਿਮ ਹਥਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥

All righteous actions of Dharma are in the singing of the Lord's Glorious Praises.

ਮਹਾ ਪਥਵਤਰ ਸਾਧ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is so very pure and sacred.

ਥਿਸੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਰਭ ਿੰਗੁ ॥੧॥ Meeting with them, love for God is embraced. ||1||

Its easy to over come the pain of poverty and the anxiety that comes by living as a householder.

ਿੇ ਕੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੁਿਲਾ ਨੰਗ ਭੁਿ ਕੀ ਪੀਿ ॥ If you are weakened by the pains of hunger and poverty,

ਦਮੜਾ ਪਲੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਧੀਿ ॥ with no money in your pockets, and no one will give you any comfort,

ਸੁਆਿਿੁ ਸੁਆਉ ਨ ਕੋ ਕਿੇ ਨਾ ਥਕਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਾਿੁ ॥ and no one will satisfy your hopes and desires, and none of your works is accomplished -

ਥਚਥਤ ਆਵੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਾਿਿਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਥਨਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਿਾਿੁ ॥੨॥ if you then come to remember the Supreme Lord God, you shall obtain the eternal kingdom. ||2||

ਿਾ ਕਉ ਥਚੰਤਾ ਿਹੁਤੁ ਿਹੁਤੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਥਵਆਪੈ ਿੋਗੁ ॥ When you are plagued by great and excessive anxiety, and diseases of the body; ਥਗਰਸਥਤ ਕੁਟੰਥਿ ਪਲੇਥਟਆ ਕਦੇ ਹਿਿੁ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ when you are wrapped up in the attachments of household and family, sometimes feeling joy, and then other times sorrow; ਗਉਣੁ ਕਿੇ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰ ਟ ਕਾ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਿੈਸਣੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ when you are wandering around in all four directions, and you cannot sit or sleep even for a moment - ਥਚਥਤ ਆਵੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਾਿਿਰਹਮੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥ if you come to remember the Supreme Lord God, then your body and mind shall be cooled and soothed. ||3||
