Scanning function for easy determination of parametersLectroPol-5 is equipped with a unique scanning function. The sam ple is placed on the pol ish ing table and a pre-defi ned volt age range is scanned to de ter mine the current density curve. This curve is used to defi ne the cor-rect volt age for both pol ish ing and etch ing.

Database with methods for various materials10 polishing/etching methods for various materials are in clud ed with LectroPol-5. A whole range of materi-als can thus be pre pared im me di ate ly, without any lengthy and time con-suming trials. These meth ods can also be used as start ing point for the de vel op ment of methods for oth er ma te ri als. 20 user-defi ned meth ods can also be saved in the da ta base of LectroPol-5.

Short polishing times and maximum reproducibilityElectrolytic polishing and etch ing have the advantage of very short prepara-tion times com pared to nor mal me-chanical spec i men prep a ra tion. Microprocessor control and da ta base functions result in al ways the exact same pa ram e ters being used. Lec-troPol-5 combines both short prepa-ration times and high re pro duc i bil i ty and is thus the ideal choice for fast quality control re quire ments.

LectroPol-5 consists of two sep a rate units, the control unit and the polish-ing unit.

The control unitBoth the power supply and the pro- gram ming and monitoring func tions are incorporated in the control unit. The unit is operated on the touch pad and on the backlit graph ic display all pa ram e ters are presented. Upon

press ing the Start button, the display changes, and the on go ing proc ess can be mon i tored. Pa ram e ters like current, elec tro lyte tem per a ture and elapsed polishing/etching time are dis played. Both the display of pa ram e- ters before and the display of actual values after process start provide an ex cep tion al amount of immediately useable information. Deviations from one process to the next can be detect-ed straight a way, and nec es sary meas-ures can be tak en. Required changing of elec tro lyte can be detected be fore changes of the polishing re sult will be noticed.

The polishing unitThe design as a separate unit makes it possible to place the pol ish ing unit away from the con trol unit. If required the pol ish ing unit can be set up in a fume cab i net while the control unit is set up out side. With an additional start and stop key the process can al so be started di rect ly from the polishing unit. The electrolyte is stored in easily exchangeable electrolyte con tain ers which are inserted into the pol ish ing unit.

The pump, driv en like a magnetic stir-rer, and the cool ing coils are low ered into the container. On the polishing table the sample is po si tioned and elec tric contact is established through the anode arm. Two different polish-ing units are avail a ble.

Instead of time consuming trial and error testing of parameters it is now easy to fi nd the correct set tings af ter a single scan of a new sample material.

Electrolytic polishing has now lost a lot of its “mystery” and is used in a more scientifi c way to pre pare metal-lographic sam ples. With a special interface kit LectroPol-5 can be connected to a PC, and all the scans can be trans mit ted, com-pared and saved.

Built-in safety featuresWith LectroPol-5, all functions are controlled through the ad vanced soft- ware. An increase in electrolyte tem-perature above a pre-defi ned limit will au to mat i cal ly result in ei ther a warn-ing or shut-down of the pro ce dure in progress. Also voltage and current are mon i -tored constantly and if the limits of Lectro-Pol-5 are reached, settings are reduced au to mat i cal ly.Thus maximum safety for both op- er a tor and equipment is pro vid ed.

With advanced cooling controlLectroPol-5 is equipped with a built-in measuring and control sys tem, con-stantly monitoring the elec tro lyte tem-perature. As soon as a pre-set tem-perature is reached, a solenoid valve in the polishing table is activated, al low ing water from the water mains or liquid from an external cooling unit to run through the cooling coil in the electrolyte con tain er. This saves pre-cious resources as the fl ow of cooling water is limited to the periods where the electrolyte tem per a ture is above a pre-set lim it.

If no wa ter or cooling unit is con- nect ed, or the electrolyte tem per a ture for some other rea sons increases fur-ther, a warn ing can be displayed and even tu al ly LectroPol-5 will shut off the proc ess au to mat i cal ly.

For polishing at sub-zero temperaturesWith this unit, the stainless steel cool-ing coils are led di rect ly to the back of the pol ish ing unit. There they can be con nect ed to an ex ter nal cooling unit. The ex ter nal cooling unit takes over the tem per a ture con trol and reg u la tion of the electrolyte. With this set-up, materials can be pol ished at sub-zero tem per a tures.

External etchingLectroPol-5 is also prepared for exter-nal etching. This is often used when different electrolytes have to be used

for polishing and etching. Also with external etch ing a time can be set, and LectroPol-5 will automatically de tect when the spec i men is low ered into the ex ter nal etch ing bowl. Then the countdown is run ning, and the voltage is ter mi nat ed when the pre-set time has expired.

AccessoriesApart from the standard equip ment, we can offer additional ac ces so ries for special ap pli ca tions.

PC-InterfaceWith this interface LectroPol-5 can be operated from a PC. The scans can be transferred into a spread sheet and com pared and saved. This allows for the com par i son of the be hav iour of

dif fer ent materials or tracking the age- ing of electrolytes. It is also pos si ble to save dif fer ent methodscreens as bitmaps.

SwitchboxTo avoid the constant cleaning when changing between dif fer ent electro-lytes, LectroPol-5 can be equipped with two pol ish ing ta bles and a switchbox to change be tween these two tables.

Extension armFor the preparation of high spec i mens an extension arm can be mount ed.

The transparent masks facilitate monitoring the electrolyte level and the adjustment of the electrolyte fl ow.
