An article on page 1 of this issue of Leavenrefers to the “all-nighter” which theseminarians spent before the BlessedSacrament in vigil before The March for Lifein Washington, D.C. on the 25th anniver-sary of the passage of Roe vs. Wade.Happily, this devotion to the Eucharist is notan unusual experience for the seminarians. The celebration of the Eucharist is the mostimportant part of each day here at SaintVincent. In addition, they find time to spendin adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, many of them practicing a regular holy hourdedicated to prayer in this way. Moreover,we spend a holy hour together on Thursdayand Sunday evenings, and many of usgather together for adoration each morningin the Chapel in Leander Hall.

Does this seem to be overdoing it? AsBishop Anthony Bosco wrote to his priests, inviting them to the Chrism Mass of theDiocese of Greensburg on Holy Thursday:“At the risk of belaboring the obvious, theEucharist must be the source and center ofour lives as priests. Without it we can donothing. We are never more Christ-like thanwhen we stand at the altar and dare to say,‘This is my body.’ Without the liturgy therewould be no Church. Without the priesthoodthere would be no Eucharist.” If I had toidentify a single most important reason forthe dramatic growth of our Seminary andthe many blessings we have received, Iwould definitely identify our efforts to center

our lives upon the Eucharist. This allows us torecognize ourselves, not only within avocation to ministerial priesthood, deeplycentered among all the members of the oneBody of Christ.

Our sense of the Body of Christ extendsfar beyond our Seminary community andincludes all of you who have supported us,loved us and prayed for us in so many ways.Eucharist means thanksgiving, and, in ouroneness in Jesus Christ we thank the Fatherfor the gift each of you is to us.

Report Positive on Seminary’s Self-EvaluationReport Positive on Seminary’s Self-EvaluationReport Positive on Seminary’s Self-EvaluationReport Positive on Seminary’s Self-EvaluationReport Positive on Seminary’s Self-Evaluation“The faculty and administration of Saint

Vincent Seminary have constructed a highlyeffective program of spiritual, academic andpastoral formation.” — Sister KatarinaSchuth, O.S.F., St. Paul Seminary School ofDivinity, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul,Minnesota.

That highly positive report written by Sis-ter Katarina comes from her analysis of anoutcomes assessment survey undertaken bythe Seminary. Sister Katarina was on the SaintVincent campus February 10 to present herfindings to the Saint Vincent Seminary Boardof Regents, the Seminary faculty, administra-tion and students.

Sister Katarina’s report “was very positive, but it also helps us focus on areas in which theSeminary can improve,” said Sister CeciliaMurphy, R.S.M., Seminary Academic Dean.

The groundwork for the assessment waslaid by Mrs. Marsha Kable, Director ofCatechetical Programs for the Seminary andSister Cecilia, as well as members of the Aca-demic Affairs Committee of the Board andthe entire Board of Regents. The assessment, instituted by the Board five years ago, askedSeminary alumni to evaluate various aspectsof the Program of Priestly Formation at SaintVincent Seminary.

The Seminary’s outcomes assessment sur-vey included evaluations of strengths andweaknesses by alumni; pastors, pastoral as-sistants and laity; bishops, abbots and majorsuperiors of religious orders. Areas studiedincluded spiritual development, academic andpastoral formation, how Seminary graduatesrate in ministry and working with groups inparishes and communities, and how well-pre-pared graduates are for pastoral work.

Marsha Kable compiled the results of theassessment and copies of the survey instru-ments are included in the appendices in theInstitutional Self-Study Report for the upcom-ing visit by the Association of TheologicalSchools (ATS) and the Middle States Asso-ciation of Colleges and Schools.

These results were then analyzed by SisterKatarina, author of The Reason for the Hope,

Sister Katarina Schuth, O.S.F., presentedher review on the Seminary program andtalked about what research says about Church, ministry and priesthood on February 10.

The Future of Catholic Theologates. SisterKatarina’s presentations included areas ofspecial competence, areas for further devel-opment, and what research says about church, ministry and priesthood.

The spiritual formation program is “excep-tionally highly regarded by graduates,” ac-cording to Sister Katarina’s report. Alumniwere especially appreciative of formation re-lating to the Eucharist, the sacraments, and theLiturgy of the Hours.

“Graduates also value formation that willhelp them develop good relationships withpriests and others in ministry,” her reportstated. “Love for the Church, understandingof their commitment to celibacy, and goodhabits relating to prayer and spiritual direc-tion were also appreciated.”

The academic formation program receivedextremely high ratings. Most of the items dealwith gaining a general understanding of the-ology and of the major teachings of theChurch. “Graduates received a solid founda-

tion for continued growth in theological knowl-edge. They acknowledged teachers, methodsand areas of study. They believe they wereprepared to communicate the Word of Godto the world. ... As with spiritual formation, itis obvious that academic preparation is viewedas outstanding by graduates,” Sister Katarina’sreport said.

“While not as positive as spiritual and aca-demic formation, pastoral formation is re-garded as effective in many ways,” the reportnoted. “Graduates felt especially well pre-pared in the ministries in which they are mostregularly engaged — celebration of the Eu-charist and the sacraments, and especially ingiving homilies. Once in the field, graduatestend to recognize deficiencies in pastoral min-istry more readily because they are respon-sible for these areas for the first time. Whiletheir own spiritual life is strongly rooted andtheir academic knowledge is sufficient to givethe needed foundation for ministry, learningto have an effective pastoral presence simplytakes time. ... The areas that are weakest deallargely with ministries outside everyday min-istry — working with people of other faithsand those who are alienated from the Church.

“The responses to the fifty areas of minis-try as evaluated by laity and pastors wereoverwhelmingly positive,” the report said. “Inthe end, the results of the entire survey canonly be regarded as highly positive assess-ments of the outcomes of the Saint VincentSeminary program. Graduates feel that theyreceived excellent formation, especially inspiritual and academic areas. Based on theirresponses, further attention and internal evalu-ation might be given to some aspects of pas-toral formation. Laity and pastors gave thehighest approbation of all and regard thepriests as competent in almost every area ofministry. They also found them to be able torelate well with every category of persons. Fi-nally, bishops and major superiors praised es-pecially spiritual formation. The survey indi-cates that the faculty and administration ofSaint Vincent Seminary have constructed ahighly effective program of spiritual, academicand pastoral formation. The suggestions forimprovement were few in number and canreadily be addressed by giving more atten-tion to several pastoral areas.”

The outcomes assessment survey has beenso successful that Sister Cecilia has been con-tacted by other seminaries wishing to use thesurvey instruments, and the Seminary has ap-plied for a copyright for it. Sister Katarina alsomay use parts of the study in her forthcomingbook, which will look at all 42 Roman Catho-lic seminary theologates in the United States.

Middle States, ATS Team VisitOn March 8-11, 1998, representatives of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)

and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools visited Saint Vincent Seminary forre-accreditation of the Seminary program.

The Seminary became a charter member of the Middle States Association in 1921 andhas maintained full accreditation since that time. The Seminary has been a full member ofthe ATS since 1983.
