Camp Peaks Has An Opening For
The Week Of June 6-10!
Is your church interested in hosting a week of
camp this summer?
Camp Peaks, our Presbytery’s Traveling Day Camp ministry program, is an-
nouncing that one of their previously scheduled weeks, June 6-10, is now
open and available!
Do you have a group of elementary-aged children who would benefit from a week of Bible stories, music, crafts, and
outdoor fun? Have you thought about putting on a Vacation Bible School or similar program, but just didn’t know
where or how to start? Camp Peaks takes care of all of the programming and staffing needs! Each week of camp is
uniquely organized to meet the needs of the congregation and community. We have camps on local farms, inner city
neighborhoods, and rural church front yards. Our staff consists of an experienced Program Director and supporting
college-aged counselors who create a safe, Christian environment, where all children can come to learn about God’s
love through others and the outdoors. The local congregation will partner with the staff to help ensure a most memo-
rable week of camping ministry!
If you have a church or community that might be interested in hosting such a week of ministry with our Camp Peaks
team, feel free to contact Jeff Binder, Associate Presbyter, at any time. We are happy to answer any questions you
may have, and we are happy to work with any special requests or needs that may arise.
Questions/Comments, contact Jeff Binder: 434.845.1754; [email protected]
Trent@Montreat (April 18-21), sponsored by Second
PC, Roanoke, is an event about practical ministry.
Come to be inspired and learn helpful ways to deal
with some of the most challenging aspects of any min-
istry. Each participant will pick one track that will have
a particular focus and leave with a network of support,
resources, and ideas in that area of interest.

WINTERJAM 2016 RIGHT FOR YOUR YOUTH GROUP? Submitted by Geoff Hubbard, Cool Spring PC Every year about this time in February or March the Winterjam tour makes a stop at the Roanoke Ber-glund Center. This tour features 10 Christian bands for $10. Many of the groups performing can be heard on the Spirit FM sta-tions, 91.3 Roanoke, 90.3 Bedford County. (Google ‘Spirit FM’ for a wider selection and to listen on line.) All this creates some beautiful experiences. One band,
The Newsboys, went off stage without playing their sig-
nature song “God’s not dead”. In the cheering for an en-
core several thousand teen and 20 somethings were
chanting “God’s not dead!” That can put a BIG smile on
a pastor’s face! I recommend this highly for reaching,
renewing, and deepening a young person’s faith
If you go: March 24 Berglund Center Roanoke 7PM
with doors opening at 6. Be early there are no advance
tickets. It is $10 at the door first come first seated.
When the building reaches its legal capacity the doors
are closed. I realize this is Maundy Thursday and many
of our churches will have services. But if you don’t and
want to reach out to youth this is great.
Beverly Gaventa to Speak
at Lexington Presbyterian’s
Festival of Faith Making the Apostle Paul’s writings concrete and connected to our
everyday life will be the focus of Dr. Beverly Roberts Gaventa’s talks
when she headlines Lexington Presbyterian Church’s Festival of
Faith March 19 -20.
Gaventa, the Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Baylor
University, and author of numerous articles and lectionary resources
has just completed her sixth book, When in Romans: An Invitation to
Linger with the Gospel According to Paul (available November,
2016).
She currently serves as president of the Society of Biblical Litera-
ture, the largest professional organization of biblical scholars in the
world. In addition, Gaventa is the
Helen H. P. Manson Professor of
New Testament Literature and
Exegesis Emerita at Princeton
Theological Seminary.
Gaventa’s other works include
Our Mother Saint Paul, Mary:
Glimpses of the Mother of Jesus,
and From Darkness to Light:
Aspects of Conversion in the
New Testament.
Dr. Gaventa, who will give two
presentations as well as the Sun-
day sermon, said she will focus
on how readers of Paul’s letter to
the Romans can move from “the
individualistic ways we read to
emphasize the cosmic scope of the gospel.” Her first lecture will be
held in the sanctuary Saturday evening (March 19), at 7 p.m. A des-
sert/coffee will follow. There will be only one worship service on
Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the
community Palm Service walk which begins at Hopkins Green at
9:30 a.m. Participants are invited to reconvene in Brady Chapel at
10:15 a.m. for hot chocolate and pastries and a time to purchase
signed books from Dr. Gaventa. The church will serve a lunch fol-
lowing the 11:00 a.m. service in Dunlap Auditorium. Gaventa will
give her final talk in Dunlap following the lunch.
All lectures are free and open to the public with a $6 donation sug-
gested for the lunch (reservations required at 463-3873).
