Dear Parents and Whānau
Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou – a warm welcome to
you all.
Learning Celebration-Thursday Evening Many thanks to the parents and whānau who turned up
last Thursday night for our Learning Celebration
evening. This is one of my favourite times all year. It is
great to have a platform to showcase our talent and
share learning successes: it is equally great to have
families socialising in a low key and relaxing way. Thanks to the thirty - seven parents who filled in our
end of year consultation form. The
winner of the Community HEART
Token draw for a $40 Palms
Voucher was Linda Prattley.
Year Six Leavers Last night we acknowledged and farewelled fifty year
6 pupils. Many of these children started at Banks
Avenue School as five year olds. It is satisfying to look
at our leavers and feel assured they are leaving us with
a kete filled with positive skills, knowledge and
attitudes well prepared and confident for the next step
of their learning journey.
My advice to these leavers:
You won’t always know everything so be
prepared to ask for help.
People are the most important thing in any
environment so work hard fo form positive
relationships with others.
Get involved – participate – take risks. The
more you do the more you will benefit.
Our staff wish you all the best in the years ahead.
Please come back and share your successes with us! I have started on the Year Six Memory Wall; ideally
these bricks will be relocated to our new school and a
memorial to past students will be created. Each brick
will have each leaver’s name and a quote or memory,
which represents them. Here is a small sample of their
thoughts and memories.
Sophie McTurk - 2014 -2017
Don't Cry Because It's Over, Smile Because It's
Happened.
Annabel Painter - 2010 - 2017 Be a pineapple: stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet
in the inside.
Kayla Winter - 2012-2017
Let your smile change the world but don’t let the world
change your smile.
Hi, kia ora, Ahalan, Goede dag, Bonjour, Guten Tag. . .

HEART Trophy Last night we presented our HEART trophy. This
trophy has been donated by Aaron and
Casey Reid, in memory of Bronwyn
Reid, who passed away in 2015. This
trophy can be presented to a child, a
parent or a family who consistently, over
time, have shown our
school HEART values;
in doing so they have positively
impacted on the lives of others.
Congratulations to Fiona Graham this
year's winner.
Service Awards Tomorrow, Thursday 14 December we will hold our
Service Award Assembly to acknowledge and celebrate
all the children who participate in and support our
school with their contributions during the year. These
children have made a difference to our school
community and our school culture so thank you!
Parent Helpers Every year we have a solid base of parents who
support us in and out of the class. We would not be
able to do any of the excursions we offer without
parents offering to come along and help. We also have
a number of parents who come in each week to support
programmes in the class, e.g., discovery time. Another
group are our BAMP mentors - a dedicated group of
parents and friends of the school who work
individually or with a small group of children
mentoring them.
Our PTA are a group of awesome individuals who
work quietly behind the scenes supporting our
children. This only a small group but they have a large
impact.
Finally our BoT. They are a dedicated team with a
firm focus on what’s best for the child. They take their
governance role seriously and again work hard behind
the scenes.
To each and every one of you I say a huge THANK
YOU! We could not do what we do for our children
without your support.
Last Day Monday 18 December Every school must be open a certain number of days.
In order for us to fulfil MOE requirements we must
stay open until Monday 18 December. I know this
seems ridiculous but that is the way it has worked out
this year.
School will finish on Monday at 12noon. There will be
an assembly on the back court starting at 11:50am. In
this assembly we will formally farewell our year six
students and any staff who are leaving. Parents are
encouraged to join us for our last assembly for 2017.
Children will be dismissed at 12:30pm

Final Words Banks Avenue is an awesome school with an incredible
team of teachers, support and office staff. Our team
work hard to provide an education and environment
which helps our tamariki grow into caring, well
rounded students who reach their potential in all
aspects of their life. A huge thank you to our Banks
Avenue staff; once again you have done a brilliant job.
Merry Christmas to all our whānau. Have a safe and
relaxing Christmas break; we will see you back on
Wednesday 31 January 2018.
Junior Module Christmas Assembly Our annual Junior Module Christmas event
is here at school on Thursday the 14th of
December from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. There will
be some singing of Christmas carols, a
recorder item, some signing and singing and
a couple of other items too.
Junior Module children: please bring
a small Christmassy item to wear in the
afternoon.
Parents and audience members: please make sure
you are wearing a sunhat.
Ayla from Room 10 has worked hard all year and can
be very proud of the progress she has made. She
settles in to her work quickly and always strives to do
her personal best.
Goodbye and Thank you to the Banks Avenue School
Community
Kia ora tātou
Next Monday, when I walk out with the Year 6
leavers it will signal the end of my full time teaching
career and a long association with this school. I
expect to have mixed emotions. On the one hand I am
looking forward to new challenges and time to do
other things that I really enjoy. On the other, I will be
very sad to say goodbye to a career that ticked all the
boxes. I am taking with me many great memories of
children, colleagues and parents. In the past weeks I
have been treated to amazing farewells at every level.
You have made me feel very special. To each and
every one of you I say a huge THANK YOU for your
kindness, generosity and support over the years. I will
always be proud to tell people I
worked at Banks Avenue
School. I wish the school well
for the exciting years ahead.

‘HOT SHOT’ LEARNER’
PTA News A big thank you for all the helpers that helped us
with BBQ on celebration evening as we couldn’t
have done it without you
It’s that time we look back and reflect on all we
have done throughout the year, and the PTA sure
have been busy. This year we had some great
events, bacon, The Naked Baker pies, bulbs,
discos and the most fun was flip out.
These fundraisers
helped us contribute
some amazing things
to our school.
Including a new
sound system, sand
pit equipment, seeds
for flowers & plants,
a trailer and many
more items for our
wonderful children
to use.
The PTA would also like to thank our amazing
teachers, office staff and families for their
support. We are already planning and looking
forward to another successful and fun year in 2018
with the trampoline again, hot cross buns and
other ideas are being tossed about, but until then
we wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday
break
