Happy Holidays
Missed Finals: Make-up final exams will be conducted the week we return to school. An
absence must be excused for a student to be given this option. I will be meeting with students on
Monday, Jan. 6, to let them know when their finals must be taken.
SMS and Text Messaging Notification: Sandwich CUSD #430 is preparing to roll out SMS or
text messaging notification for reminders, emergency and other notifications. Prior to using this
method of communication, the district will be sending an email to parents containing instructions
for sending an opt-in text message to a group code.
The opt-in must be done from the mobile device that is to receive these messages in order to
begin receiving them. Also, the number for this mobile device must be included in your child’s
parent profile in the Tyler parent portal. Please contact your child’s attendance center for
updating this information.

Attention All Juniors: Immunization Requirements: All 12th-graders are required to show
proof of having received two (2) doses of the meningococcal vaccine unless the first dose was
given on or after the student’s 16th birthday.
All health requirements are required to be completed and on file with the school nurse by
the first day of school in the fall. No student will be allowed to attend school until this
requirement is met.
It is not too early to begin preparing for the next school year. It is recommended that you get
vaccinated now in order to avoid any last-minute rush during the summer. In addition to
healthcare providers, health departments and many pharmacies offer this vaccine.
Please contact Mrs. Gonzalez, the school nurse, if you have questions.
Wellness: Mark your calendars! Sandwich CUSD #430 will be having its first Wellness Night
on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Sandwich Middle School from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Many wellness-related
vendors are expected and we are excited to share this information with our community. All are
welcome. More information will be coming home at a later date.

Dear Parents & Friends of Sandwich Schools:
In 1994, the Sandwich C.U.S.D. #430 Foundation for Educational Excellence was formed. The
purpose of the Foundation has been to support, promote, supplement, and enrich the educational
programs and activities of students; and to develop links with businesses and civic organizations.
Since 1994, the Foundation has carried out its mission extremely well. Due to the efforts of the
Foundation and its many benefactors, programs have continued to be enhanced throughout the
district. Teaching and learning opportunities have been strengthened while community support
for our schools continues to be generated.
Although the Sandwich CUSD #430 Foundation for Excellence works in close communication
with the Board of Education, it is completely independent of the Board of Education. Foundation
funds are obtained from individual and corporate tax deductible contributions, as well as through
other planned fundraising activities. Due to your continued generosity over the years, well over
$375,000 has been raised to help supplement positive programs and services for our students.
Spending decisions will be made by the Foundation leadership which is a Board of Trustees made
up of local parents and citizens. Your involvement as a Board of Trustees member is welcomed
and encouraged. As a matter of fact, the Foundation is very much in need of new members, so
please consider serving. With your busy schedules, please know serving is not very time
consuming.
Presently, the Board of Trustees has been making plans for their annual fund raiser. The
Foundation will be holding its annual fundraiser on April 18, 2020 at the Fox Valley Community
Services Center in Sandwich with doors opening at 6:00 pm. This year’s event will again be a
Casino Night and Silent Auction. Since the event is a fundraiser, guests won’t be winning real
money at the tables. Instead, they will earn prize tickets which will give them a chance to win a
variety of prizes.
The silent auction will run from 6-9 pm where guests will be able to bid on a wide variety of
prizes donated by the schools, local businesses, and the community; and the casino will run from
7-10 pm.
Appetizers and a light dinner will also be available during the event. Tickets for the event are
$25. Tickets may be purchased online at: https://squareup.com/store/sandwich-education-
foundation
Please feel free to contact the SEF for more information, to purchase tickets, or to make a
donation. Should you have questions, the Board of Trustees can be reached at:
Wishing you and your student nothing but success, I remain,
Sincerely,
Rick Schmitt

DCP/SAFE January News
December is Impaired and Distracted Driving Prevention Month
DCP/SAFE created an awareness bulletin board about unsafe driving behaviors. On Dec. 11, we
held an activity for students to participate in where they could sense what impaired driving may
feel like. To do this simulation, DCP/SAFE set up a Mario cart game and students texted while
driving to see how it impacts the ability to focus. We had drunk goggles for students to wear and
perform tasks to see how vision and coordination are impacted. Officer Fasnacht, the SHS
resource officer, put students through mock sobriety testing while they were wearing the drunk
goggles. We also had a trivia wheel on safe driving to allow students to test their knowledge on
safe driving.
Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23–31
Each day during the week of Oct. 23, the students and staff dressed up for Red Ribbon Week,
showing their support for a drug-free lifestyle. Also during lunch there were various activities for
the students to participate in with awareness information and activities.
S.L.I.P:
This month S.L.I.P. students were taught the concept of "service learning" as they visited
Walker's Grove Elementary in Plainfield to work with students. Along with students from
Oswego, Oswego East, Plano and Yorkville, S.L.I.P. students were put in the position of
servant/leader for the first time. The S.L.I.P. program tries to stress that leadership is a whole
group function and the true servant/leader leads by initiating action and modeling positive
behaviors. This was a wonderful opportunity for the SLIP students to be positive role models and
inspirations to the younger elementary students.
NHS collected Toys for Tots for the annual USMC collection. Here are our officers next to our
collection this year, more than 200 toys!
Seniors from the high school Golf team came to Herman E. Dummer School during P.E. classes
for a day to show our fourth- and fifth-grade students proper golf techniques.
Learning about how to depict space in a two-
dimensional picture plane, Mrs. Mullen’s Art II
students created holiday-themed architectural
drawings. By depicting foreground, middle
ground and background, students exhibited the
ability to show depth in their drawings.
