Classroom

Students will be in the first grade with previous knowledge of counting numbers and patterns

Classroom of 16 students, 9 girls and 7 boys, 2 with ADHD, and 1 with autism

Students will have a previous knowledge of counting, addition and subtraction, and completing word problems in math

Page 3: Learning to Use Money

Objectives

Students will be able to identify coins and dollar bills and use them in a practical sense in exchange of goods

By the end of the lesson they will be able to set up their own shops, have a knowledge of what money is used for, and know some information about the faces of our currency

webpage, and progress into basic knowledge of coins

Day 2

To get more hands on, students will use iPads and the App “Amazing Coin” to recognize coins through patterns, matching, greatest values, and the beginning of practical use.

To better understand the use of money students will use iPads and the App “Toca Store” in pairs. One student can pick the inventory and prices while the other shops and counts money to pay. After doing each role once students will switch.

Day 3

Students will be making Arts and Bots. Using recyclable materials students their previously learned knowledge of how to program robots with light, sound, and movement and create their own moving “Piggy Bank”. This will use math and science, arts and crafts, and the concept of saving money.

Day 4

Students will now be given plastic/fake money (capital for starting a store and some to buy goods from their classmates) and told to come up with ideas for their own store. They have the option to buy items for their store with their base money. After coming up with their products they have the whole day to make signs and set prices for their goods to sell to their classmates.

Day 5

The classroom will be set up like a shopping center and the class with be divided in two groups. One group will start as store owners and the other customers to shop and buy goods. They will then switch after half the class period.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in days 4 and 5 by their ability to use money practically in a real word use. In the previous days they learned identifying money, counting money, and a basic concept of saving money. All of these skills will be used in days 4 and 5.
