Also, we have to say goodbye to our Vice Principal, Mrs. Klassen. She has been such an important fixture at Richmond Street for the past two years and we will miss her knowledge, her sense of humour and her many different colours. Personally, I have not worked with a better partner and I will miss her dearly. We will also welcome new members to our Raptor team! Mrs. Kosuta (prep), Mrs. Mayhew(FSL) and Mrs. Alcox (Vice Principal) will be joining us for 2016/17 and we look forward to their new experiences and knowledge that they will bring. BREAKFAST CLUB

As the School year comes to an end, we would like to thank all those dedicated volunteers, who gave so

much time to ensure our Richmond kids were fed every school morning. The healthy and nutritious food

options were sure to give our kids the start they needed to keep going all day long.

We are now asking for volunteers to sign up for the 2016-2017 school year. Without dedicated

volunteers the breakfast club cannot run.

The time is from 8:05 to 9:10 Monday to Friday. Please sign up in the office and your information will

be forwarded to the breakfast club coordinator.

Please Note: Breakfast Club will run as long as possible, we will let you know if

there is any changes. Breakfast Club will begin again in mid September.

RAISING MONEY FOR CANCER

Raising Money for Walker Family Cancer Centre

Richmond Street School hosted a bake sale on Tuesday, May 3rd, and

raised $600.00 to support our local hospital’s Cancer Centre! Thank

you to the students and families of the Junior classrooms who brought

in baked goods for this event. A special thanks goes out to the

organizers for this event: Shanice B., Madison D., Hilda J., Angelin L.,

Milan V., and Mr. Goar. These girls came up with the idea, developed a

plan, and ran the bake sale. The girls and Mr. Goar made a visit to the

Walker Family Cancer Centre on May 17th to donate the money on be-

half of Richmond Street.

Thank you, Richmond Street, for making a difference in our

community!

Dear Parents and/or Guardians, June 6, 2016

During the months of May and June, the District School Board of Niagara begins the process of establishing staffing

needs for many of its schools. Determining enrolment for September is a key factor in the process. If you are aware of

any families who will be living within the boundaries of Richmond Street Public School by September, please remind

them to enroll at our school as soon as possible as bussing takes a minimum of three days to arrange through NSTS

(Niagara Student Transportation Services). Your assistance is greatly appreciated. The office will close on June 30th and

re-open on August 29th, 2016.

In establishing classes for the 2015-2016 school year, please trust our professional judgment to make good pedagogical-

ly sound decisions regarding your child’s class placement for September. Please trust that we are well-educated profes-

sionals with your child’s best interests at heart. Guidelines that we consider when creating class lists include the follow-

ing:

Ability

Learning style/social needs

Work habits

Special program needs

Behaviour

Gender balance

Class Size

With some large and smaller numbers in various grades, and Ministry caps in the primary division, we will likely have

some combined grade classrooms in September. This is a reality with a growing school. A combined grade is no differ-

ent then a single grade classroom where there are children at many different levels. All teachers use differentiated in-

struction to meet the needs of all learners in their classrooms.

When creating class lists, present and receiving teachers meet with each other, administration and Learning Resource

Teachers to make final decisions. Parent preference cannot be a determining factor, however, if you have information

you wish to make us aware of that pertains to your child's success, please forward it in a written letter to the office ad-

dressed to Mr. MacJanet and Mrs. Klassen. If you choose to write a letter please provide information about your child

only (areas of concern). Please do not make requests or recommendations for specific grades, classrooms, or teachers.

Teaching Assignments for next year are tentatively the following (this could change according to new enrolments):

Vice Principal: Mrs. Alcox

Secretaries: Mrs. Weir

Mrs. Beaudoin

Caretaking Staff: Mrs. Shaule

Mrs. Wilson

Also, some students entering grade 3 next year will have a unique opportunity to be a part of a Team Teaching class

room. What this means is that there will be two classes placed together with two classroom teachers in a much larger

space ( our old cafeteria). This will be taught by Mrs. Horth and Mrs. Steinbachs. Great things are happening at Rich-

mond Street!

If your child is with a different group of students, please consider discussing the value of new friendships, new opportu-

nities, and fresh starts. We are looking forward to another wonderful school year with your support.

Thank you,

THE SUN IS BACK!

The sun is shining and it’s time to get outside to play! But before you run outside, make sure you remember your 5 S’s…

Slip: on some clothes that will protect your skin from the sun (loose-fitting and tightly woven are best).

Slop: on some sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and filters UVA & UVB rays (broad -spectrum). Put sunscreen on 20

minutes BEFORE you go outside, so it can soak in. Don’t forget your ears, nose and feet if you are wearing sandals! Lips

should also be protected with SPF 30 lip balm.

Slap: on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears and neck

Seek: shade when outside between 11am-4pm

Slide: on some sunglasses that have 100% UVA & UVB filter s.

Attention moms, dads, coaches and caregivers: sun damage can happen quickly, so make sure youth remember sunscreen for lunch

break, gym class, track and field and other outdoor activities.

For more information, talk to your school nurse.

HOW TO GET 2016 BACK TO SCHOOL STU-DENT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) is a consortium between the District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board. The mandate of NSTS is to plan and administer safe, efficient and effective transportation services for the students of Niagara.

On August 15, 2016 NSTS will post specific back to school transportation arrangements for each student enrolled at the school boards, including bus route numbers, stop locations and times. Eligibility infor-mation is also available through the portal and walking directions are available if your child lives within the walk zone of the school and is not eligible for transportation service.

Please visit www.nsts.ca and sign-in to the secure parent portal to get your child’s student transportation information. To sign-in to the portal you will need your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) which can be found on their report card. While signed-in, please subscribe to the delay and cancellation mod-ule for direct and timely emails regarding student transportation that impacts your child.

Changes to home, pick-up or drop-off addresses must be made through your child’s school. During the summer you may notify NSTS of address changes so we can make sure a bus stop is available for your child to start the school year, however, NSTS is not authorized to change student address information.

With the availability of the secure parent portal, NSTS will not mail student transportation notices with the exception of Kindergarten students or new students to the system who do not have an OEN to sign-in to the portal.

Please contact your school or NSTS if you have questions regarding your child’s transportation arrange-ments.
