Details
Place: Linking Road, Bandra, Mumbai Date: 18.09.2014 Observed: A street shop owner of
women’s clothes Price Range of clothes sold: Rs.100 to
Rs.1000 Customer type: Middle class women
especially youth
Reason for observing a street shop owner:
Street shop owners provide a wide array of goods and commodities to the urban populace at reasonable prices and convenient locations
Middle and lower class consumer specifically prefers to purchase from them, though even well-off citizens purchase many commodities given reasonable prices
Vendors exhibit remarkable entrepreneurial skills
Reason behind choosing Linking Road, Bandra:
Bandra is a central location Also known as ’Queen of Suburbs’ in Mumbai Many people work there or in the areas nearby Many big names of Bollywood live in Bandra A good mix of all religions is found in Bandra
Scenario:
A colorful and crowded street in the afternoon A lot of people shopping, especially ladies Some 100 odd number of shops Every vendor is trying to attract the potential customers Vendors are shouting, calling customers in their shops
Observations:
Keeping watch on the people entering the area Searching for potential customers Judging the customers from their faces, things they use
(Mobile phone, bag, clothes, etc), etc Showing them the clothes similar to those they are wearing Carefully listening what the customer wants and giving the
exact garment in the proper size If the size is not perfect, convincing customers that it is the
new pattern or it is wore that way only If the customer is still unhappy, telling them about the
humid weather or telling them it will be perfect after a couple of washes
And finally the main part...MAKING MONEY !
Price which is told first time is normally double or triple the actual price ( One can get Rs.350 garment at Rs.100 ) Negotiation is normally varies from customer to customer Customers are also made emotional sometimes A profit of 20% to 30% is made by the vendors
Some other observations: Customers are treated very respectfully Liberty to pick up whatever they wish from the shop Normally the clothes are arranged in heaps ‘Change’ is always given to the customers If the customer wants to come after sometime, his/her
selected item is kept aside Focus is on keeping the customer happy Quick operations Everybody was given thin plastic carry bags though
they are banned by the government
THANKYOU
