Principal’s Message I recently aWended a community lunch with members of Government, accompanied by Isaac Gilbert, Head Boy, and Annica Calitz, Head Girl. It was a pleasure to be in a room of dedicated, compassionate community groups, our local members and the Deputy Premier Mr Roger Cook. When quesSons were invited the sombre tone clearly indicated the hurt that our community is feeling, especially the most vulnerable. It was clear that Government cuts have hurt our community and the ‘ambulance at the boWom of the cliff’ analogy is a very real reality in Geraldton. The quesSon Sme needed to shi\ focus and it was put to the student leaders in the room to talk about issues that they are concerned about. Annica responded to this challenge with maturity, poise and concern that acknowledged the current reality, yet swung the conversaSonal tone to ‘fence at the top of the cliff’ and further out to ‘sign post of cliff approaching’ by asking the following quesSon: “Is the government looking to invest in preventaSve measures, such as our Rangeway Mentoring Program, to address some of the causes of disengagement in our culture?” Annica confidently exchanged back and forth with the Deputy Premier, informing him of the work that current Year 12 students, and other cohorts, have been involved in mentoring vulnerable students at Rangeway Primary School. The success of the program was echoed by several community group representaSves in the room and resulted in followup conversaSons between Annica and Isaac with our local members and the Deputy Premier. It was truly a privilege to see our students speaking confidently to the highest level of government in our state on iniSaSves aimed to transform the community in which we live. It was a wonderful expression of our Mission Statement in acSon, ‘through excellence in educaSon to equip students for works of service’. It is these moments in Sme that we can be truly proud of what we are called to do as a community. Well done Isaac and Annica for represenSng our community so well. Fire  and  Rescue  Visitors  In  Kindy,  we’ve  been  learning  about  the  people  in  our  community  who  are  there  to  help  us.  We’ve  had  a  visit  from  the  Police  and  last  week  we  had  a  visit  from  the  Fire  Department.

We  learnt  about  how  to  stay  safe  in  a  fire  situaSon,  what  equipment  fire  men  use  at  a  fire  and  what  equipment  is  stored  on  the  fire  truck  such  as  the  ‘jaws  of  life’,  the  ‘water  hose’  and  the  ‘led-‐lighSng  tower’  which  retracts  out  of  the  roof  of  the  truck.

The  students  enjoyed  learning  about  the  job  of  being  a  fireman  and  the  students  prayed  over  these  brave  men  and  the  important  work  they  do  in  the  community.

SAM  Update  Cover  Crop  (next  to  the  oval)  The  cover  crop  that  was  planted  two  weeks  ago,  before  the  first  rain,  is  already  starSng  to  shoot  out  of  the  ground.  It’s  amazing  how  quickly  these  seeds  respond  to  the  rain.

Community  Garden  Visit  Last  week,  Year  8  students  visited  a  Community  Garden  in  Beachlands  where  Mr  Stan  Maley  spoke  about  wicking  beds  and  how  they  work  for  growing  vegetables.

Compost  Year  2  students  have  been  learning  about  compost,  how  it’s  made  and  what  it’s  used  for.  Students  have  been  assisSng  with  the  process  by  adding  shredded  paper  to  the  organic  mixture.

Fresh  Produce  Market  From  Sme  to  Sme  we  will  adverSse  on  Facebook  our  fresh  produce  market.  This  is  a  great  opportunity  for  students  to  learn  how  to  weigh  and  price  items  for  selling.  All  money  raised  goes  back  into  products/plants  needed  for  SAM.  Thank  you  for  your  support.

There’s  always  something  exciSng  happening  in  SAM.

ACC  Inter-‐school  Cross  Country  The  2018  ACC  Cross  Country  Team  did  a  great  job  compeSng  and  represenSng  the  College  in  challenging  condiSons  at  Perry  Lakes  in  Perth  last  Thursday.  The  students  embraced  the  stormy  weather  and  ran  their  hearts  out  in  races  with  300  plus  compeStors.

Our  best  performer  this  year  was  AusSn  Collins  who  came  52nd  in  the  boys  u/15  race.  Every  other  student  did  their  best  and  should  be  proud  of  their  effort.

Thank  you  to  our  parents  for  encouraging    and  ensuring  the  student  parScipaSon  in  the  Carnival.  The  best  memories  and  life  experiences    are  made  by  choosing  to  take  part  and  not  to  sit  back  and  spectate  while  the  opportunity  presents  itself.  Thank  you  to  the  teachers  and  parent  volunteers  who  put  a  lot  of  hard  work  and  personal  hours  into  the  Cross  Country  Carnivals.  It  is  a  privilege  to  work  with  you.

Let  us,  as  a  Strath  sports  community,  keep  on  celebraSng  the    character  of  our  students  as  teachers  and  parents  in  the  environment  they  perform  in.  I  look  forward  to  the  next  Carnival  to  experience  playing  sport  in  the  right  spirit  again.

Homework  habits  ‘Whatever  your  hand  finds  to  do,  do  it  with  all  your  might’  Ecclesiastes  9:10

Homework  is  important  to  improve  memory  and  skills.  It  helps  children  learn  how  to  work  independently  and  to  take  responsibility  for  their  work.

How  can  we  get  the  most  out  of  homework  and  how  can  we  encourage  our  children  to  develop  good  habits?
