Demonstrate pronunciation features of final /s/ in third person present tense.



What is the sound? When speaking English, the final /s/ ending in third person can

have three different sounds: a) /s/ as in sings; b) /z/ as in tells; and c) an added/separate syllable, /iz/ as in watches



How do you make the sound? /s/? Placement- the tip of the tongue is close to the gum

behind the top teeth. Manner- air flows between the tongue and the gum. Voice- /s/ is a voiceless sound (no vibration) Examples- sings, tastes. makes (hint: sound of snake;

ssss)



How do you make the /z/ sound?

/z/ sound Placement- the tip of the tongue is close to the gum

behind the top teeth. Manner- air flows between the tongue and the gum. Voice- /z/ is voiced (place hand on throat to feel the

vibration) Examples- saves, lives, listens (hint: sound of a bee;

zzzz)



How do you say the /iz/ sound? /iz/ sound Placement and Manner- same as the /z/ sound with

a short /i/ as in is: pronounced as a separate syllable /iz/

Voice- /iz/ is voiced Examples- wishes. watches. buzzes



Rules for using the final /s/ sound? Rule 1: When the last sound in the base word ends in a

voiceless sound. use the voiceless ending /s/ Rule 2: When the last sound in the base word ends in a

voiced (vibrated) sound. use the voiced ending /z/

Examples A chef bakes cakes. She saves money. Susan wishes. Sonya sleeps late. The teacher listens. He watches them. She drives a truck. He reads books. A mechanic fixes cars. The sales clerk sells dresses, blouses, shoes, neckties, and

suits.





ExamplesWhat Does Ann Do? Ann Sims is a fire fighter. At the fire station, she waits for

calls from 911. She fights fires. She drives a truck to homes and buildings. Then she puts out fires. She uses hoses and other equipment. She rescues people and saves lives. Ann works 12 hours a day 3 days a week. She works the night shift. She goes to work at the fire station at 6:00 in the evening. She gets off at 6:00 in the morning. Sometimes she changes her shift. Then she works during the day. Ann likes working as a fire fighter.





ExamplesWhat Does Tim Do? Tim Mays is a police officer. He drives a police car around

the city. He protects the people in the city. He watches out for trouble and keeps the streets safe. Tim works 8 hours a day 5 days a week. He works the day shift. He goes to the police station at 7:00 in the morning. He gets off work at 3:00 in the afternoon. Tim enjoys working as a police officer.
