  • “Our students have changed radically. Today’s

students are no longer the people our educational

    system was designed to teach.”

    ~Marc Prensky

    Digital Shift

  • Our

    Students

    ../Fort Worth/A Vision of K-12 Students Today [www.keepvid]_large.avi

  • Should we translate traditional learning

environments into digital format, or should there

be a complete reworking of our ideas about

    education and training?

    Paradigm Shift

  • Today’s Students

    • First PC – 2 years old• Learn to read at 5 so he could get a World of Warcraft account• Learned to text 4 years before learning how to make a phone

    call

    • Doesn’t understand why there is no WiFi in the car• Researches answers to anything on YouTube, Google, etc.• What’s a card catalog?• Created own blog site at 11• Reads BBC news online because that’s his home page• Doesn’t watch TV – Netflix, YouTube, seeks own content & hates

    commercials

  • ⚫ Visionary leadership and commitment

⚫ A clear and shared vision

⚫ Addresses the needs of the district/community

⚫ Technology is not the focus

⚫ Technology is the support tool for learning

    ⚫ Develops 22nd century skills

⚫ Solves problems that are not “Googlable”

    ⚫ Engaging, authentic and relevant

⚫ Robust technology capacity to support mobile learning

⚫ Professional development geared to new learning approaches

    ⚫ Scalability

⚫ Policies that promote and enhance the initiative

    Critical Components for Digital Transformation

    CoSN

  • Shift from “What’s Taught” to“What Students Need to Be Able to DO”

To succeed in 21st century college and careers,

students need to be able to:

    ⚫ Solve problems

    ⚫ Communicate

    ⚫ Adapt to change

    ⚫ Work in teams

    ⚫ Analyze and conceptualize

⚫ Reflect on and improve performance

    ⚫ Manage oneself

    ⚫ Create, innovate, and critique

⚫ Engage in learning throughout life

  • The Questions We MUST Answer

    • How do we prepare schools for students arriving with these skill

    sets?

    • How do we keep school relevant and engaging?

    • How do we create learning opportunities for self-directed

    learners?

    • How do we equitably provide those opportunities for a diverse

    student population?

  • • Greater emphasis on students’ global skill preparation

    • Value of personalized learning on the rise

    • Interest and acceptance of new learning models

    • Increasing criticality for Internet connectivity – at school

    and at home

    • Learning is a 24/7 enterprise for students

    • New expectations from parents – digital

    aspirations esp. for communications

    • Strong desire to understand real outcomes from digital

    learning

    • Digital learning is a metaphor today for education

    transformation

    Speakup Findings

  • Mobile Trend

  • “Students will no longer come to

    school and power down their

technology, but will use it to create an

    education environment that reflects

their lives. The teacher becomes the

learning coach, not a gatekeeper to all

    things academic.”

    ~Gartner
