Learning CoachesPSD Implementation Model2012-2013First the good news!PSD is implementing the learning coach model and has developed a funding process to support it divisionally! The Divisional Coaching Program is a gift to our schools!

The Division is gifting a Divisional coaching program to schools in a three-year plan.3What the research says:

Research says that:To be most successful, a learning coach in a school should be at least .5 f.t.e. in the learning coach role in order to provide the coach with adequate time to dedicate to the work and reduce the complication of having many other responsibilities.

Divisional Coaching ProgramThe PSD Divisional Coaching Program recognizes the diversity and complexity of students that schools serve.

Each school serves a different population of students and has its own school culture with unique needs. Our coaching model will provide coaches with the freedom to serve the students within their schools and to select those supports and services that best respond to the needs of its students.6Divisional Coaching Program10 f.t.e. Learning Coaches to be shared divisionally!

We cant afford 1 full time coach per school, but will strive to find some equitable way of sharing the resources we can afford. Adding 10 f.t.e. learning coaches to the divisions staff will provide significant support for teachers in a new and exciting way.7Divisional Coaching ProgramThe Division is planning to support the Coaching Program for three years. Efforts will be made to work toward sustainability.

Divisional Coaching ProgramGuidelines will help us to ensure success for everyone!

Guideline #1:Implementation at the school level must align with the Divisions vision and purpose of the coaching program. In the next couple of weeks, Learning Services will be articulating the vision, the outcomes, the groups served, etc. as outlined by Joellen Killion.10Guideline #2:The key contact and learning coach must be different people.

Guideline #3:The learning coach must be someone who has participated in the learning coach cohort training program.Guideline #4:Learning coaches will continue to participate in ongoing professional learning through Learning Services.Individuals not selected as coaches but who are currently enrolled in the coaching training will be invited to continue their training. This will build sustainability in our system in terms of personnel and add expertise to our schools. All professional learning is valuable.13Guideline #5:The learning coach must not be an administrator. The learning coach role does not include an evaluative role, and if the learning coach were an administrator, it would be difficult to separate the roles, particularly for the teachers.14Next Steps:Determine the learning coach f.t.e. designation per school.

Through conversations at the community school level, principals and senior exec. will determine the most effective way to staff the positions at each school.E.g. .5 f.t.e. coach and .5 f.t.e. classroom teacher in one schoolE.g. full time coach shared between schoolsOther?Next Steps:Share the vision, goals and expectations with LEAD Team
