2 3Course Guide 2015/16Learning and Development at LSBU

ForewordWe can only achieve our ambitions for the University, our students and ourselves if we are equipped and skilled to offer our best.

Our Corporate Strategy 2015-2020 states that our focus is to create an environment which attracts and fosters the very best staff, and within which all staff feel their achievements are equally and fairly valued and rewarded, feel proud of their university and take appropriate responsibility for its development.

This brochure brings together the great range of development opportunities provided by colleagues across the University and external partners to enhance your skills and knowledge. It supports the Academic Framework and career pathways we have developed for Professional Functions and includes the mandatory courses you are required to attend to ensure compliance with our legal responsibilities.

We hope you take full advantage of this programme which will continue to evolve as new organisational learning and development needs are identified throughout the year.

We also hope that our commitment to your development demonstrates our ambition for you to feel you are both adding value and feeling valued by LSBU.

Student Support & EmploymentThe Student Support & Employment team offer comprehensive support and advice to students during their time at the University and after they graduate. The following provides an overview of the team’s work and a taste of the information sessions open to staff to learn more about our work during this academic year.

Understanding Graduate Destinations – Improving outcomes for our undergraduate students is a key corporate priority. The Employability Service conducts the annual Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey but success in the outcomes is dependent on colleagues from across the university playing their part. Come along to a lunchtime briefing session with our DLHE coordinator, Lorna Carsley, to get an insight into how the survey works, how the data is collected and how the results are interpreted. All staff, both academic and support, are welcome to attend.

Skills for today’s labour market – Employers tell us that in a world where so many people have strong technical qualifications, it’s the added extras that make the difference in recruitment. Our Employability Programme Manager, Nick Turk, will take you through the support on offer from the Employability Service both on courses and outside curriculum. The session will also allow you to make suggestions and any specific requests you might have for your students.

Managing placements safely – Work-based learning is crucial to success in the graduate labour market, but are you sure that you know all there is to know about keeping your students safe when they’re in the workplace? The Employability Service offers briefings on risk assessments, monitoring and everything you need to know to make sure you, your students and the university are protected.

Full details of dates will be confirmed in due course, but in the meantime, any queries can be directed to the Employability Service on [email protected] or 020 7815 6427.

School of Health & Social Care & TELAs part of the Technology Enhanced Learning Work stream a range of learning and teaching topics will be available. These will include drop-in clinics to support academic staff to improve their IT skills in their roles, Electronic Submission and Marking to help familiarise staff with the process and practice of setting up assignments and Turnitin to Moodle Clinic (Drop ins) where you can receive advice and support in the building of Moodle sites.
