Each year, The Phocuswright Conference theme embodies the major trends shaping travel, presents a mandate that transcends buzz, and challenges industry leaders to rise to the occasion.

Disruption has become the expected unexpected in travel – a natural cycle where interlopers overturn established norms, forcing us to reenvision our best-laid plans. What’s truly disruptive now is the wild acceleration of this cycle: New entrants upend, and quickly become the upended. In Disruption’s Curve – where no company is safe and long-held beliefs are suddenly liabilities – how can we prepare for what we can’t foresee? How do we plot the unplottable?

By reveling in it. By becoming part of it. By turning your company into a place driven by the same forces that drive disruption: confidence in risk, speed in action, invisibility in process, delight in user experience, and indifference to any hint of legacy order.

The Phocuswright Conference is a live research project where attendees immerse themselves, real-time, in an environment that impels them not to think outside the box, but to break the box entirely – and to use its best parts to create something new and extraordinary.

Innovation’s Global Reach

Since its inception in 2008, The Travel Innovation Summit has attracted a broad range of startups from diverse geographic regions – but this year’s competitors covered even more of the globe, hailing from Iceland to Australia.

Of the 32 presenters, 15 were based outside the United States (47%). India and Australia each had three companies in competition, followed by Ireland, which had two. Other countries represented were Canada, Iceland, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Israel and China. Chinese companies have presented in the past, but this year’s China-based innovator was the first to focus on the outbound Chinese market.

“The word has gotten out, and they know we pick the best websites,” said Bob Offutt, senior technology analyst and leader of The Travel Innovation Summit. “This is about world-changing innovation.”

Travel Innovation Summit 2014: Trends and Insights

Thirty-two startups vied for The Phocuswright Travel Innovator of the Year award during Tuesday’s Travel Innovation Summit.

Presenters frequently visited four underlying themes during their pitches:

• Personalization – using machine learning, combining personal data with real-time information, and leveraging a variety of discoveries gleaned from big data to make highly relevant recommendations.

• Integration of all kinds of long-tail and ancillary travel services, including travel insurance, car rental, destination services and duty-free shopping. In essence: “Would you like fries with that?”

• Simplifying the consumer travel experience: removing the pain of arranging ground transportation, recovering from flight disruptions.

• Helping travel suppliers and sellers work more efficiently and profitably by enabling better revenue management, reducing IT investment, and improving speed and reliability – most often by capitalizing on cloud services.

• Many innovators on Tuesday focused on intermediaries – online travel agencies, destination management organizations and travel management companies – rather than on the B2C space. The disruptive business models proposed by some presenters conflicted sharply with supplier interests, prompting Critics Circle panelist Terry Jones to describe one innovator’s product as “anti-revenue management software” and to suggest that another “get some insurance” as protection from supplier retaliation.

Discussions with the judges indicated that the innovators who would earn votes were those focused on solving large problems, especially when the proposed solutions demonstrated a tangible return on investment. Presenters equipped with clear, experience-based market sizing and those who described relevant case studies involving dramatic cost savings, speed increases, or conversion improvements provided the most compelling narratives. Pitches involving hypothetical scenarios that would solve complex challenges were often met with skepticism from judges and the Critics Circle. Similarly, go-to-market strategies that required aggregation of massive amounts of data – especially from potentially unwilling partners – came under particular scrutiny.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDWinner: Options Away

Co-founded by Robert Brown, a 20-year financial industry veteran, the Chicago-based Options Away lets users purchase a hold on their flights for up to 21 days, taking away the worry of having to pay more for an air ticket due to not booking prior to a potential price increase.

Supplementary services include sourcing al-ternative itineraries that save time or money, motivating the customer to book. Options Away also has a Big Data opportunity. The company has announced early partnerships with Expedia and Hipmunk and, most recently, with Sabre.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDRunner-Up: Nor1

Leith Stevens, SVP of business development for Santa Clara, CA-based company Nor1, demonstrated the success of its eReach service, which merchandises in-destination products. The service represents a stride to-ward capturing share systematically in a valu-able and elusive niche: 58% of travel spend happens during a trip, while 42% is spent prior to departure (usually on air and hotels).

EReach collects data about travelers, includ-ing where they’re going and how long they’re staying, and serves up relevant offers for local activities that have been curated and person-alized. Early customers include Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Carlson and Sabre/TripCase.

TRAVEL INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR STARTUP COMPANY CATEGORY

Startup Winner: VacationFutures The site aims to ease the rental process for all parties involved – namely homeowners and property managers, but by extension, travelers too. Founded by Andrew McConnell and Mickey Kropf in 2012, VacationFutures provides a wholesale marketplace where owners can (quickly and easily) list their properties, and property managers can peruse inventory and place bids on homes. This model enables managers to receive higher margins than they would elsewhere and gives homeowners the comfort of guaranteed income, freedom in use of their property and the benefit of professional management.

Startup Runner-Up: TableGrabber TableGrabber’s RezGuru is essentially a GDS for restaurants – a tool for maximizing revenue and minimizing losses. RezGuru also automates dynamic pricing and recommends other strategies based on an algorithm that uses 21 separate variables, such as availability, revenue per seat per hour, predicted consumption of specific dishes, and even the weather.

TRAVEL INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR EMERGING COMPANY CATEGORY

Emerging Winner: PassportCard International The hassle of actually using a typical travel insurance policy, should the critical moment arrive, is an ache familiar to many travelers. Enter PassportCard, whose insurance product – the company itself isn’t an insurer – offers real-time claim handling and all-expenses-paid policy cards. The company hopes this model will relieve what it calls the “infinite discontent” of this niche (after all, even insurers aren’t happy). As CEO Sharon Haran put it, “You call, we pay” – on the spot (wherever the spot is), whatever the charge, and with no follow-up or deductible.

PassportCard is also the winner of the GENERAL CATALYST AWARD FOR TRAVEL INNOVATION

Emerging Runner-Up: Options Away Options Away and its centralized flight marketplace also won this year’s People’s Choice Award. For a prepaid fee, Options Away will hold a traveler’s preferred flight for up to three weeks, relieving the anxiety of paying too much for a flight (or losing a seat altogether).

TRAVEL INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR ESTABLISHED COMPANY CATEGORY

Established Winner: WorldMate Inc. WorldMate’s itinerary planning service, geared toward corporate travelers, has a lot in common with a PDA or a service like Google Now. Every piece of information the user enters yields intuitive, relevant responses, such as real-time flight monitoring, sharing of trip details with LinkedIn contacts, and suggestions about hotels. WorldMate also lets travelers rebook rooms without a fee when the same booking becomes available at a lower price. (Hotels can then counteroffer.)

Established Runner-Up: Amadeus Industry veteran Amadeus has created a novel solution to the ever-present problem of flight disruption. The company’s Personal Disruption Companion, first launched with TAM Airlines, uses intelligent data to help airlines, corporate travel managers, and travel agencies patch up the itineraries of travelers whose flights are late or cancelled, as well as those affected by larger-scale obstacles (e.g., volcanic eruption in Iceland).

BRAND USA MARKETING INNOVATION AWARD

Brand USA Winner: bd4travel

Germany-based startup bd4travel (Big Data for Travel) provides IT services that enable travel companies to personalize offerings in real time. Through predictive analytics and carefully crafted algorithms, bd4travel allows travel portals to learn not only about their customers, but also about themselves and what differentiates them – in the eyes of the consumer – from the competition. Currently, the company’s client base includes hotels and tour operators.

Expedia’s Global and Mobile Push

In addition to a focus on organic growth, Expedia is globalizing and making aggressive investments in building out its customer base in international markets. According to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the OTA is striving for a more diverse revenue mix.

“When we look at our footprint and the global travel footprint, they don’t match. We are overweighed to the U.S. For now, it’s a good thing because the U.S. economy is booming. The U.S. is 30% of the global marketplace, and we essentially want to look like the global marketplace. It’s going to require us to get much bigger in Europe and rescale in Asia. I think that in five to seven years, we can get there.”

On the hotel side, Expedia announced a partnership with hotel check-in startup CheckMate, a 2013 Phocuswright Travel Innovation Summit finalist. Other travel partners of CheckMate’s mobile guest engagement platform include KAYAK, Travelocity, Orbitz, TripCase and Concur. Khosrowshahi recognizes that a great deal of capital in the travel space has been allocated to hotels, but there hasn’t been enough innovation on the airline side of the business.

To that end, Expedia has integrated Routehappy’s flight search results, which take a “Happiness Factor” into account and allow travelers to compare flights based on comfort. The company is also working with Amadeus on offering rebranded fares and integrating TripDeck technology.

The audience also got a firsthand glimpse at a brand new innovation as Khosrowshahi demonstrated Expedia’s easy-to-use tablet interface, calling it a “lean-back experience.”

“It just has nothing to do with the desktop experience, and we think that the look and feel is incredibly rich,” Khosrowshahi said. “And this kind of innovation and ease of use is hopefully going to then beat us on the desktop, which is where we want to go.”

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“If you don’t want to be disrupted by smaller companies, disrupt yourself.” James Liang, Founder and Chairman, Ctrip

“We call travel the field of broken entrepreneurial dreams.” Mark Logan, COO, Skyscanner

“Egencia is growing rapidly and competing against a bunch of businesses that wish the Internet never happened.” Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO, Expedia

“I’m still dissatisfied with the quality of the services we offer …” Steve Hafner, CEO, KAYAK

“You must have done something in the last 12 months that you are proud of?” Lorraine Sileo, Phocuswright (to Steve Hafner, KAYAK CEO)

“Albert Einstein, Ayatollah Khomeini, then a toss-up between Barack Obama and Lindsay Lohan.” Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO, Expedia (in response to Tony D’Astolfo’s question of three dream dinner guests)

Meta, Media, Momentum

In one of the more candid interviews of the conference so far, KAYAK CEO Steve Hafner shared his opinions with Phocuswright’s senior vice president, research, Lorraine Sileo.

What’s changed the most since Priceline purchased KAYAK two years ago is an appreciation for the scale that a big business like Priceline operates at, Hafner said. “When you’re a startup, you aspire to build a great product or service. You don’t appreciate the complexity of operating at scale, with millions of consumers in multiple countries.”

Even though the company has grown and is profitable, Hafner remains dissatisfied with the quality of KAYAK’s services: “We’re good at search. But what’s missing now is the spark, the innovation. KAYAK as a mobile app is not indispensable. I used KAYAK to book my flights here and manage my trip. It sucked that when I got to the airport, my boarding pass didn’t show up. It sucked when I got to Hertz and had to look up my name on the Gold Club to find my stall. KAYAK should have told me that. If we can eliminate the friction points in the path, it will be a much better app.” Not surprisingly, the company’s focus is on mobile.

KAYAK was one of the first meta sites to move into instant booking. But Hafner doesn’t think the booking part will be the differentiator – rather, it will be how companies weave together intent and follow the consumer across activities, devices and the web, and market the appropriate ad or offer for a meaningful, good experience. In other words, personalization – “which every travel company is trying to do, and none of us are doing it very well,” Hafner noted.

Keynote: Andrew Mason | CEO | Detour

After leaving Groupon, Andrew Mason got busy developing a mobile app that provides informative self-guided walking tours. Capitalizing on mobile technologies, including location-aware services (GPS and iBeacon), navigation, and audio sourced from local individuals, the app offers an immersive, exploratory travel experience. The essence of Detour’s technology is that content is pinned to geographic waypoints. The multilayered audio files (narration, music and ambient sound tracks) provide the context, which is enhanced by relevant images.

The company’s business model is to sell audio tours for $8-10 and provide annual subscriptions for all tours in a destination. The intention is to eventually open the platform as a marketplace so that anyone can provide content – hopefully, to help people to explore the world and become better people in the process.

Keynote: Reggie Aggarwal | CEO | Cvent

Describing the difficulty of being disruptive, Reggie Aggarwal explained that en route to Cvent’s present success (the company’s IPO was in 2013), it burned through 97% of its $17 million in funding and laid off 80% of its staff. Cvent, which is a meetings and events software company, intends to use technology to empower attendees and meeting planners to create more efficient and productive events.

The focal point of Cvent’s model is removing the pain points that affect group movements associated with events – extending from the request for proposal (RFP) phase through transit, arrival, transfers, lodging, event registration and social sharing. While smaller events will increasingly transition into virtual meetings, face-to-face engagement is what drives the value of a rewarding event experience.

Keynote: James Liang | Founder & Chairman | Ctrip

China’s rapidly growing travel market could expand by a factor of 10 over the next five years, according to Ctrip’s James Liang. Given that 47% of the Chinese market uses mobile devices (many have never used a PC), Ctrip has become a mobile-focused company.

Ctrip has a five-pronged strategy for its future success:

• Scale – Leverage a broad range of product categories to provide a one-stop shop for travelers.

• Technology – Employ a team of 1,500 engineers to provide an industry-leading mobile platform.

• Service – Provide exceptional customer service for travelers through its 10,000-person customer service team.

• Culture – Take company culture seriously: Ctrip is an acronym for Customer, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity and Partner.

• Innovation – Strengthen Ctrip’s one-stop mobile platform through an improved API, strategic investments in partners, and attraction of world-class talent.

The China travel market remains wide open and highly competitive, resulting in what Mr. Liang sees as an environment ripe for innovation, as many large companies vie for position within what will soon be the world’s largest travel market.

Keynote: Brian Sharples | CEO | HomeAway

The vacation rental consumer travels to spend time with loved ones, not to meet new people. CEO Brian Sharples looks at HomeAway as a site that helps diverse modern families connect – something that is under siege due to increased engagement with technology and employer pressures to reduce vacation time.

HomeAway is currently focused on personalizing its marketplace and managing a greater degree of the rental experience. The company has also set a goal of 100% online bookings by 2016. It is also making efforts to allow owners to add content via mobile, as well as integrating additional services into its mobile offering – for example, Instacart (for groceries) and Uber (for transportation). HomeAway also led the latest $20 million investment round in Gogobot to further integrate destination experiences for its “tribes” of users.

The Mobile-First Future (Is Now)

According to Sam Shank, CEO and co-founder of HotelTonight, mobile is ubiquitous throughout the hotel experience, and OTAs have an opportunity to offer additional services to guests every step of the way.

In the coming years, HotelTonight could function more like a digital assistant than a booking engine, allowing a host from the hotel to connect directly with the customer’s mobile device, he said. The app might interact with Lyft, TripAdvisor, Facebook, calendar applications and other services to fully customize a guest’s stay based on personal preferences. Want breakfast delivered when you wake up, but don’t know when that will be? Not a problem. The HotelTonight of the future could integrate Fitbit technology, which detects sleep patterns, and predict when the guest will awaken. That data is then sent to GrubHub. And voilà – breakfast is served.

“Technology liberates us and automates menial tasks,” Shank said. “It allows us to be more human and to be better humans.”

Additional insights gleaned from the panel: Mobile is the platform of choice for developing markets like India and China. In these markets, mobile is often a user’s first Internet experience. Qunar started investing in mobile as early as 2010, and today approximately 40% of its total revenue comes from mobile. Mobile is king at Cleartrip as well: 22% of its customers are mobile-only.

Western OTAs are watching the trend closely, focusing on mobile apps that offer seamless search and booking. Orbitz reports that a quarter of its reservations and about half of its hotel bookings now come through mobile.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“On the New York Stock Exchange, we’re three times the price from when I took over six years ago and had to clean up Steve’s mess.” Barney Harford, CEO, Orbitz (when asked to respond to harsh comments made yesterday by Steve Hafner, founder of Orbitz and current CEO of KAYAK)

“I think Uber. The reason is they’re both great companies, but what I love about Uber is it’s truly disruptive in a new way.” Darren Huston, President and CEO, The Priceline Group and Booking.com (when asked by Phocuswright founder Philip Wolf, “If you could acquire Uber or Airbnb for the same price and terms, but only one, which would it be?”)

“We’ve spent $10 million on marketing since founding HotelTonight. That’s how much the big OTAs spend in a single day.” Sam Shank, CEO, HotelTonight

Keynote: Qunar

Qunar CEO CC Zhuang laid out the ways in which the Chinese online travel industry is morphing into something unlike any other market. His business is evolving rapidly to take advantage of opportunities and keep up with market needs. In an unprecedented development, Qunar is doing revenue management for small, new airlines (e.g., Qingdao Airlines) that don’t have the technical capability themselves.

He noted four key trends in the industry:

• Personalization

• Dynamic planning (Qunar intends to roll out dynamic pricing for hotels soon)

• Booking everything on mobile

• Social inventory

Zhuang also revealed some surprising statistics. More than 50% of Qunar’s hotel bookings and 40% of flights are through mobile, and many in the Chinese market are going directly from offline to mobile. During 1Q2014, when seven OTAs boycotted Qunar over direct booking, the company tasked 2,000 employees with signing up 170,000 hotels in 130 cities.

Even though the company has been losing money every quarter since its IPO last year – including a $70 million loss in 2Q14 – Zhuang said that this is not a problem when you are growing so quickly. “The key is to grow market share. When growth slows to 60%, then you need to look after profitability,” he said.

MORE QUOTES

“This is the first computer that’s worth more when it’s old than when it’s new.” Terry Jones, Executive Chairman, WayBlazer (on IBM’s Watson)

“That’s the dumbest statement ever. Here’s why: There are two kinds of entrepreneurs. You want to be king, or you want to win. Capital is energy ... Capital is awesome; it’s fuel. And I want to win.” Aaron Gowell, CEO, SilverRail Technologies (in response to Siew Hoon Yeoh, WIT editor, quoting Skyscanner CEO Gareth Williams’ philosophy that “funding is a form of cheating”)

Executive Roundtable: The Disrupters

Siew Hoon Yeoh, editor of Web In Travel, moderated a lively panel of disruptive executives. Each is focused on relieving “pain points” in travel.

Easing the burden of property management of vacation rentals: “You can stay with someone who is well prepared, or [the rental] could be broken, dirty, and if you’re planning for a group or family vacation, we’re trying to raise the level for the consumer, and add a service layer so the owner doesn’t have to think about it,” said T.J. Clark of TurnKey Vacation Rentals.

Making rail a bigger part of the travel search experience: “Rail is a $300 billion market. That’s two thirds of air, yet you’ve never seen a single ticket sold on KAYAK or any major OTA, and you can’t compare air and rail options, because of two problems: access and search,” said Aaron Gowell of SilverRail Technologies.

Making car ownership more efficient: “There are a billion cars around the world. They’re idle a vast majority of the time. Our mission is to turn the car into an ATM,” said Andre Haddad of RelayRides.

Making the global ski market more efficient: “There were crazy inefficiencies in pricing and distribution status quo. Until we founded our company, e-commerce and revenue management did not exist for these products. We built the revenue management platform that pushes distribution to Liftopia.com, which has become the largest marketplace for ski ticketing,” said Evan Reece of Liftopia.

Making activity and tour booking easier: “We provide an alternative to the US$27 million activity space and focus on how people spend and monetize their time and interests. We’re helping people connect on a peer-to-peer platform,” said Jamie Wong of Vayable.

Overall, they agreed that you have to be disagreeable – at least to the status quo – to be disruptive. For inspiration, the panelists look to Craigslist, eBay, Waze, GrubHub, peer-to-peer marketplaces, and new marketplaces in general. But you can’t be a copycat. “By definition, they are not innovative,” Wong said.
