Many years ago, a girl from Honduras, Central America, was sent by her parents to Saint Basil Academy to study English. The girl took a ship from Puerto Cortes, Honduras and headed to New York City alone at the age of 15. Upon her arrival in New York, a friend of her parents greeted her and put her on a train to Philadelphia where she was instructed to get off at the North Philadelphia station. The girl missed that train stop and ended up at 30th Street Station. There was no one there to greet her because the party who was to meet her was at work. The girl took a taxi and went to the friend of her cousin and waited for her until she came home from work. In the meantime, two Sisters of Saint Basil had been waiting for the girl from Honduras at the North Philadelphia station and were quite concerned that she had not appeared. That evening, the Sisters received a call informing them that the girl missed her stop and was fine. The family friend told the Sisters that she would bring the girl to the boarding school the next day. On the following day, the girl arrived and the Sisters greeted her warmly. It made the girl feel better because she had already been missing her family. After meeting other classmates at the boarding school, she began to feel more at ease. Once settled in the dormitory, the girl went to school and was told to go to homeroom. Because her native language was Spanish, the girl was not that comfortable with the little bit of English she knew how to speak. After homeroom, a bell rang and all the students went to different classes. The girl began to cry; she was a bit confused and did not know where to go. Finally settled in her classes, she began her studies. While she felt very much alone, yearned for her family and cried quite often, she made friends quickly and the SBA girls really began to warm up to her. After a month or so, two other girls from Honduras came to SBA and the girl from Honduras got so excited that she stopped crying.

The three of them were always speaking in Spanish. The plan for the girl from Honduras was to finish her high school in three years since she came from such a distance. The Sisters of Saint Basil were so loving and kind that they made sure she had the courses she needed each year. The girl improved in her English-speaking skills and other subjects and did very well. She felt very much at home with the Sisters who embraced her with much affection. The girl also discovered that she had a gift for playing basketball. In Honduras, she had played basketball and belonged to a team. She had a very demanding coach. When she tried out for the team at SBA, she was so thrilled to make the Varsity team as a freshman. She wrote home about it and her family always sent the school paper articles that mentioned her name to her former coach, who was very proud. For three years, the girl from Honduras shared great moments and experiences with her friends and the Sisters at SBA. Activities, school work, celebrations, and games, made her life so pleasurable. Many happy memories and lasting friendships were made. When the girl from Honduras graduated, her aunt came for her graduation. The girl was thrilled to see someone from her family after three years. As her departure grew close, there was sadness to leave her beloved school, which had been her home away from home. She also shed tears of joy anticipating going back home to her loving family, her parents and her eight brothers and sisters. Three of her good friends from SBA as well as two Sisters of Saint Basil went to New York with her to see her off. She was so touched to see the Sisters who nurtured and educated her. That, however, is only part of the story of the girl from Honduras. Two years later, the young woman from Honduras returned to Philadelphia and entered the Order of the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great, giving of herself, her time, and her love to the Saint Basil Academy community. Saint Basil Academy is such a wonderful gift to experience and after many years, the Academy continues to grow and excel in what it does best—educate, inspire and send its graduates to enlighten the world. I am asking you, my fellow “Basil Sisters” to join the Academy today in helping the young women who walk the same halls as we have in becoming the leaders of tomorrow.

FALL 2017 Fall has rushed in like a lion! The cool temperatures in the ear-

ly morning, the falling gold and red leaves scattered across the

grass, and the rising sun, all remind us of the changing seasons

so close ahead. Change is inevitable. It is evident in nature’s way

of nudging us forward out of summer, into fall, in anticipation

of snow and winter. Change can also be felt in the halls of Saint

Basil Academy.

As I began my new role as principal in July of this year, teach-

ers and staff echoed the sense of something new, something dif-

ferent. As everyone took a breath after finishing the school year,

there was a palpable anticipation of what was to come. Summer

gave everyone a chance to embrace new beginnings that would be the start of the 2017-

2018 school year. Now in November, only months after my start, the evidence of change

continues to unfold. Our 1st annual alumnae event down the shore was well received,

giving alums an opportunity to reconnect with one another. Our Sports Hall of Fame

inductees celebrated their accomplishments as Basil alums and community leaders while

humbly recognizing SBA as the start of their successes. This issue of the Basilian Legacy

encompasses the many achievements that have unfolded in the past months. As you turn

each page, read about our student accomplishments, identify with our dedicated teach-

ers, and aspire to reconnect with fellow alumnae at upcoming events.

As the season changes, I pause and gratefully acknowledge our graduates and friends

for their continued financial support. With the changing of seasons comes a reassurance

that new life and new opportunities are only around the corner. As we anticipate the

change of seasons, let us remember that we are afforded the opportunity to be creative

and explore ways in which we can work together to make new things happen. Just like

our students embrace the unknown, opportunity invites us to open our hearts and minds

to new ideas, to taking new risks, to becoming who God calls us to be and to do the work

God asks of us. Growth calls us to be hopeful of the newness of the future.

This season let us work together and center our energies on realizing that growth. As

Saint Basil believed, “That we should consider every season an opportunity for exercising

zeal in that which is pleasing to God.” Let this season be one of change where our success

is limitless when we are united in a common pursuit of academic and spiritual excellence

for the young women of Saint Basil Academy.

Every day, students bring their keen insight in the classrooms and their overwhelming

spirit to the community. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or on the stage, our girls

grab every opportunity to envision what could be and make it happen. I ask that you join

Open House 2017 on October 8 was a huge success! Over

200 prospective students stepped foot on the campus at 711

Fox Chase Road and experienced first-hand how Saint Basil

Academy prepares students academically and spiritually and

lets each young woman be inexplicably her own unique self.

• Students and cheerleaders with pom-poms lined Panther

Way, inviting and welcoming all families.

• Student hospitality members greeted each family

individually taking them on personal tours.

• Families experienced the band, handbells, and choir

performing in the auditorium, and our pop-up madrigals

performing sporadically throughout the building.

• Freshmen made slime in the science lab while talking about

their experiences as new students in the school.

• Conversation and coffee with our principal, Mrs. D’Angelo,

revolved around the SBA mission, identity, and our

foundation in academic excellence.

• Students propelled objects at targets in the physics lab and

engaged in Ancient Roman culture with the history and

English departments.

• Open House highlighted SBA’s foundation in academic

rigor coupled with its dedication to develop all facets of the

individual student.

• The positive buzz in the community abounds! Each day

more and more families are learning about the gem that is

Saint Basil Academy, and we are looking forward to a great

Class of 2022 joining our community!

OPEN HOUSE

Once again the grounds of Saint Basil Academy came to life as the carnival came

to town from June 21-24th. The Academy welcomed not only our families and

alumnae, but also the neighboring communities to enjoy this fun filled event.

Here at SBA you could enjoy such delights as walking tacos, pierogis, pizza and

eggrolls, but also follow it up with your choice of funnel cake or gelato; all which

was served by SBA’s very own faculty and volunteers. If you didn’t come for the

food, you could get your face painted by our amazing students, and, of course,

win a beta fish. All activities were also run by our devoted staff and parents.

Our carnival’s success was due to a remarkable group of volunteers that began

planning this event back in January. We worked tirelessly to find the right blend

of foods to showcase and hand-picked each ride to make sure all who attended

had the best experience. The photos below highlight some of the happy faces:

Director, would be

inducted into Montgomery

County’s Sports Hall of

Fame. With his induction

into this prestigious

organization, Hugh

joined former Olympians,

accomplished college

athlete/graduates of

Montgomery County High

Schools, and successful secondary and college level coaches.

Hugh McGovern’s athletic career started as a student at Father

Judge High School, where he was also inducted into the Father

Judge High School Hall of Fame in 2008. While at Father Judge,

Hugh was an accomplished track athlete, earning “All-Catholic”

and “All-City and State” champion honors in the 440 and 880

yard events both in 1963 and 1964. Upon graduation from

high school, Hugh was awarded a full athletic scholarship to the

University of Nebraska. There he continued to excel by breaking

and holding numerous college track records, leading him to earn

Big 8 and NCAA All-American titles in 1968, as well as a silver

medal in the United States Track and Field Championships.

Hugh graduated from the University of Nebraska with a B.S.

degree in Education, followed by a Master’s Degree in Education

from Temple University. He was both a teacher and an athletic

director at Springfield High School in Montgomery County for

thirty-five years, and an assistant athletic director at Lansdale

Catholic from 2005 through 2007. He joined the Saint Basil

Academy community in 2008 as Athletic Director. Hugh’s

leadership, guidance, and dedication to the Academy and the

athletic programs have provided the inspiration for our sports

teams to continue to earn championship titles at the Catholic

Academy level, and titles in both District and State competitions.

Hugh is particularly proud of the SBA athletes’ recognition by

the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association through the

PIAA Sportsman Award in 2009-2010 and 2014-2015.

Hugh resides in Abington, PA with his wife Liz, is a father

of two sons and a grandfather of six. When not attending SBA

athletic events, Hugh enjoys attending his grandchildren’s

activities and relaxing at the South Jersey Shore.

Kong schools. As a residential program, these students eat and breathe chemistry for three weeks, six hours of lecture and lab during the day, and two hours of study hall every evening. Essentially these students learned the entire year of introductory chemistry in three weeks. Intellectually this job is very stimulating and exhilarating, but physically quite demanding, especially due to the monsoon summer weather in Hong Kong during July and the proximity of Hong Kong to the equator. In addition to the perks of travel in Asia, I am learning about the Asian students and schools, and growing professionally both in content and instructional strategies. Back at Saint Basil, I can share my observations with Basil girls and can offer meaningful advice on how to navigate the ever more competitive global academic environment.

AP SUMMER INSTITUTE, LA SALLE UNIVERSITY

In July, two members of the SBA English Department, Christine Meko and Emily Kleinle attended the AP Summer Institute offered at La Salle University. This week-long program brings AP teachers from varied educational programs together in a classroom setting to be trained in all aspects of their respective AP classes from highly-qualified instructors certified by the College Board. The seminar provided the teachers opportunities to interact with other AP Literature and AP Language teachers and share instructional methods, planning strategies and successful test preparation tools. “Being new to the AP model, I was eager to gain information regarding the best way to structure the class and tackle the significant amount of material that needs to be covered,” said Mrs. Meko. “The instructor was extremely approachable, had many years of experience teaching AP Literature, and was incredibly generous with materials and recommendations for success. I entered this academic year really excited to bring what I learned into the classroom for the benefit of my students.” Mrs. Kleinle shared similar feedback on her seminar experience noting that “spending a week collaborating with other AP Language teachers not only offered new approaches to the material but reinforced the knowledge that many of the methods I have been using are right on the money.” Both teachers emphatically stated that the seminar is a “must-do” for every AP teacher and are grateful for the opportunity sponsored by SBA.

BEARING WITNESS WORKSHOP

Jacklyn Kazimir, Jean Castellano and Emily Kleinle attended Bearing Witness, a four-day workshop hosted by the Anti-Defamation League and The Archdiocese of Philadelphia at the Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, PA this summer. Bearing Witness is a professional development workshop designed for Catholic Educators to be able to teach the historical relationship between Jewish and Catholic communities. Specialists in the fields of Jewish studies, Holocaust studies, and Catholic-Jewish relations lead the program of study to help give Catholic Educators more resources on Anti-Semitism, The Holocaust, and modern day prejudices. Along with the four-day intensive workshop, there was a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., a lecture at Georgetown University, and a visit to a local synagogue.

HONG KONG, CHINA

For the second summer in a row, I traveled to Hong Kong University to teach high school chemistry. As a staff of the Center for Talented Youth (CTY), a Johns Hopkins University program, I was the instructor for the Fast-Paced High School Chemistry course. This course is highly sought after among the Asian students and families. I had twenty students who had completed 8th, 9th or 10th grade, mostly in Hong

TRAVEL FOR TEENS

This summer, Travel for Teens took SBA students on the adventure of a lifetime. We spent eleven days traveling to five cities in Spain, including Madrid, Segovia, Córdoba, Granada, and Sevilla. Some highlights included an amazing tour of fantastic artwork at the Prado Museum, relaxing in rowboats on the lake at the Parque del Retiro, a visit to the Alhambra, and even a trip to the Arab baths! We look forward to our upcoming trips to England in February and Costa Rica for sun, surf, and community service in the summer.

STEUBENVILLE YOUTH CONFERENCE, OHIO

Over the summer, 16 students from Saint Basil Academy attended University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio for a Youth Conference. The students attended Main Campus 5 conference from Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23, 2017. The students gathered with about 3,000 high-school aged students from all over the world for a weekend of renewal, enlightenment, and encounter with Christ. Students attended daily Mass, attended several talks by renowned Catholic speakers, joined in praise and worship music, experienced Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and had the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Those at the conference heard from an all-star cast of speakers such as Leah Darrow, Father Mike Schmitz, Matt Fradd, and Ennie Hickman. It was an incredible experience for the students to be able to praise Christ with so many other Catholics from around the world, and we look forward to attending another conference next summer.

My classmates from 1985 and I had a wonderful time at Basils on the Beach. We are all Facebook friends and chat online often. But there is nothing better than getting together in person with longtime friends. We all knew each as awkward freshmen girls and it is great to see how everyone has blossomed into accomplished grown-ups. Over beers and roast beef, we chatted about our jobs, kids and families. We caught up with each other and re-established the bonds of friendship. I can’t wait to do it next

On Saturday, July 29, 2017 over 300 amazing alumnae

gathered together at Flip Flopz Bar and Grill in North

Wildwood, NJ to join together at our first annual all class

reunion at the Jersey shore.

It was a wonderful day filled with memories shared of

our days of walking the halls in our saddles, reminiscing

about teachers who changed our lives and of course

friends we still hold near and dear to our hearts.

BASILS AT THE BEACH

Dear SBA Alumnae:

In Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 we read that “for everything there is a

season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” This was,

and continues to be, one of my favorite Scripture passag-

es. And it is this passage that comes to mind when I think

about Saint Basil Academy and the bright future that is ours.

We, like almost every other educational institution, have

weathered some trying times in the past few years, suffering

the slings and arrows of declining enrollment and staff turn-

over. But under the steady and capable guidance and lead-

ership of SBA’s Principal Connie D’Angelo, we are moving

into a new season, an interesting and promising season.

Our new class of 82 freshmen will witness the Academy’s revamped and restruc-

tured goals, our enduring commitment to academic excellence, enabled and enhanced

through technological advancements and superior staffing. One thing, however, that

will remain constant is the type of students that we have always had and will continue

to have. Since Saint Basil Academy was established, there has always been something

special about our “girls.” This is something I hear echoed every day throughout the

community. Visitors are overwhelmed with our students’ courteous manner, praising

their sincere smiles and their welcoming greeting. They are all struck by the students’

willingness to be of service. Local employers marvel at the efficiency and prepared-

ness of SBA students, whose work ethic and skills in many fields are a tribute to the

high standards taught and expected by SBA faculty and administrators: high academic

strengths, ethics, and civic responsibility.

As I sit and reminisce over the years I spent at SBA, my heart is filled with gratitude

and love for all the young women whose lives I touched and whose lives have touched

mine. Each of you has a very special place in my memories, and I am most grateful for

having spent ten years of my life as principal of this wonderful institution. Those years

at SBA were the best years of my life.

I shared this adventure with many good teachers and administrators invested in the

same cause as mine, and I recall with pride how hard we all worked to educate, inspire,

and motivate the young women entrusted to our care. The greatest hope we shared was

that the students we taught would carry with them good life lessons as well as lessons

from textbooks and lectures. The stories I hear from employers and others suggest that

our work paid off.

Now it is time to continue the fine tradition that the Sisters of Saint Basil established

so many decades ago and reap the harvest we have sown. We ask for the guidance of the

Holy Spirit as we work to shape Saint Basil Academy into the best secondary school in

the Philadelphia area. My prayers are offered for your intention. I ask God to be gener-

ous in His love and care for each one of you.

Beth C. Hanssens ’86Beth is a management executive with senior leadership team experience in finance, accounting and business operations in for-profit and not-for- profit corporations. Beth holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Drexel University and is also a CPA. Beth is an active member on several educational boards.

Katina Sawyer ’03Katina has been selected as one of the recipients of 2017 Philadelphia Business Journal Top 40 under 40 Recognition Award. Katina received her B.A. from Villanova University in Psychology, and her Ph.D. from Penn State University in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Women’s Studies. Katina currently holds the position as Assistant Professor of Psychology, Graduate Programs in Human Resources Development at Villanova University.

Amy LintnerAmy Lintner serves as School Director of Ancillae- Assumpta Academy, where she attended as an elementary student. Amy holds Bachelor degree in elementary education from St. Joseph’s University, and a master’s degree from Holy Family College. In her current role, Amy promotes the vision and mission of Ancillae-Assumpta Academy, directs all long-range planning with respect to curriculum and staff development, and fosters the development of public relations and institutional advancement.


Honorable Diane McMonagle Welsh ’72

“Leave things better than you

found them,” is the motto

Diane learned from the

Sisters at Saint Basil Academy

and the principle by which

she has dedicated her life.

After graduating SBA in

1972, Diane studied Political

Science at La Salle University

and then attended Villanova

Law school. After graduation,

Diane started her career as Counsel to the Pennsylvania Senate

Judiciary Committee. As Deputy District Attorney for the Bucks

County DA’s office, Diane quickly became Chief of the Child Abuse

Unit and the Victim Witness Assistance Unit. During her time, she

was able to implement innovative multi-disciplinary approaches to

child abuse investigations making the process less burdensome for

children but effective in securing convictions.

In 1994, Diane was appointed to the United States Magistrate

Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In her 12 years on

the court, Judge Welsh gained a reputation for her extraordinary

skill in helping parties settle the most complex, high stakes, and

often contentious litigation.

In 2006, Judge Welsh joined JAMS-The Resolution Experts- to

become a full-time Mediator and Arbitrator. She has a national

reputation as one of the most sought after and effective mediators

in the U.S. She is regularly listed as the top mediator in numerous

local and national legal publications.

Claire Clauss DiLullo ’66

Claire was one of seven

sisters who attended SBA:

graduate of the class of 1966,

was the president of her

Sophomore and Junior Class

as well as the president of

student council in her senior

year. During her four years

After graduation, she attended Temple University. Claire is

currently the President of the Saint Basil Academy Alumnae

Association.

She is the owner of Moonstruck Restaurant and Joseph’s Pizza

in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. She is a member of “Les

Dames d’Escoffier” which is an organization of women who have

distinguished themselves in the hospitality field. Claire was also

awarded the 1995 Panache Award for outstanding restaurateur.

She has been involved with many charitable organizations

including: Aids for Friends, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now),

Thorncroft Therapeutic Equestrian Center and the Philadelphia

Opera Company.

Colleen Landy ’97

After graduation from

Saint Basil Academy in

1997, Colleen continued

her education at St.

Joseph’s University. Upon

graduating in 2001 with

a BS in Psychology and

from Philadelphia College

of Osteopathic Medicine

in 2003 with an MS in

Counseling and Clinical

Health Psychology, she completed the Nonprofit Ascending

Leadership Certificate Program in 2013 at Bryn Mawr College.

Her passion is on helping homeless youth and youth in the foster

care system.

Colleen worked for 12 years at Covenant House PA, a homeless

shelter for youth under 21, in various roles including the Program

Director. She began working for Valley Youth House in 2013 as the

Associate Director of The Achieving Center in Philadelphia, which

serves over 1000 older youth in foster care annually.

In her current role as Director Bucks and Montgomery County

Programs which she has held since early 2016, she oversees 8

different programs across the two counties. Valley Youth House

serves youth and families across Pennsylvania. The programs

include a youth shelter, a street outreach program, a mentoring

program, and various housing and independent living programs.

Throughout her career she has worked as a consultant therapist for

youth in Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. Colleen also serves on the

Board of Directors for the Community Center at Visitation in the

Kensington section of Philadelphia.

On Saturday, October 14, 2017, Saint Basil Academy celebrated its annual Homecoming event. The evening included inductions into the SBA Athletic Hall of Fame. Ten women, SBA alumnae and coaches, were inducted for their individual athletic achievements. The entire 2005 Basketball team also joined the ranks of the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. The class of 1972 took this opportunity to come together, catching up and laughing together as they did years before as students. It was as if they had never left. Families who had spent time together cheering their daughters on the court and on the field also took this op-portunity to reconnect and reminisce.

Dinner for the event was provided by SBA’s alumna Claire Clauss DiLullo, owner of Moonstruck Restaurant in Fox Chase.

have graduated from Saint Basil Academy, or have been an athletic

coach and/or staff member at Saint Basil Academy. A nominee is not

eligible for a period of six years following her graduation from Saint

Basil Academy. The award may be voted posthumously.

Every year, the SBA Counseling Services Department sponsors a Career Day program to bring new ideas to our students about the careers that they may wish to explore. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, February 1, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Saint Basil Academy. This day gives the opportunity for our students to learn about the career paths of their SBA sisters who have graduated and been successful in their fields - namely, YOU! Please consider giving a few hours of your time to share your career experiences and the path that took you there. You are an inspiration to our students and proof that your hard work leads to an exciting future.

Great institutions grow because their

foundations are rooted in a strong legacy,

and our legacy is you, our alumnae, and the

Sisters of Saint Basil. The Sisters established

this beautiful Garden of Sisterhood we

call Saint Basil Academy, and along with

dedicated lay teachers they have educated

thousands of young women for more than

eighty years. Thousands of you entered our

doors and grew during your four years. You

grew in your spiritual connection to God,

you grew academically and went on to

pursue vibrant and successful lives. You

grew socially, and formed friendships that

still last today.

Today, we are calling upon you to help

us grow. Private high schools like Saint

Basil Academy must adopt new strategies

to increase enrollment, and develop new

academic programs to meet the needs

of ever-changing methods of learning.

Successful schools involve their graduates

to be a part of that process, and with your

financial help we have begun to initiate

those strategies. By staying connected and

sharing your successes, you provide goals

for our students, motivate other graduates,

families and foundations to donate, and

ensure a promising future for our school.

Sharing the good news of our wonderful

school helps to defuse the enrollment

competition we face: lower birth rates,

charter schools, cyber schools, home

schooling and online education, just to

name a few. We know well, that the cost of

operating a private high school has increased

significantly in the last ten years, and that

we must do everything possible to make our

tuition affordable to our families. You can

help us to do that and to continue to grow.

This past July the administration hired

Mrs. Connie D’Angelo as Principal and

engaged Rev. Joseph Campellone, OSFS,

former President of Father Judge High

School, to work with her to develop new

strategies in advancement, fundraising and

alumnae relations. Together they believe as

the Sisters say, “Leave things better than you

found them.” We are truly better together

and with your help we will continue the

legacy of our Sisterhood. We will plant seeds

today that will strengthen the tradition of

this great school. Come back to the Garden

of Sisterhood and help us grow!

COURTNEY WALTER '05Courtney Walter recently received a political appointment to serve as a Policy Advisor with the United States Department of Labor. Courtney moved to Washington, D.C. after having lived in Miami, Florida for the past seven years. In Miami, Courtney attended FIU Law School, where she was named the Editor-in-Chief of FIU Law Review and graduated Valedictorian of her law school class. Upon graduating law school,

Courtney practiced as a civil litigator, and she most recently completed a two-year federal judicial clerkship with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Courtney has also served as an Adjunct Professor in the areas of Constitutional Law and Legal Writing. Courtney is thrilled to be living closer to her hometown of Philadelphia and looks forward to coming back to SBA in the near future.

KATINA SAWYER '03Katina Sawyer, Class of 2003, has been selected as one of the recipients of 2017 Philadelphia Business Journal Top 40 under 40 Recognition Award. In order to be considered for this recognition, nominees were judged based on their career growth and success, community involvement, leadership ability and their influence and impact in the region regarding either public policy or on quality of life. Villanova University in Psychology, and her PhD from Penn State University in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Women’s Studies. Katina currently holds the position as Assistant Professor of Psychology, Graduate Programs in Human Resources Development at Villanova University.

DANIELLE SCHROEDER '12 Danielle Schroeder, B.S./M.S. Civil Engineering student, is in her fifth and final year at Drexel University. This past October at National Society of Women Engineers Conference, Danielle won the Outstanding Collegiate Member award which is the highest award given at the collegiate level. A maximum of 10 awards are given annually to collegiates from across the nation. As described on SWE’s website, the award is “Bestowed

upon SWE collegiate members with at least two years of SWE membership who have made an outstanding contribution to SWE, the engineering community, and their campus.” Danielle was specifically honored for her dedication and leadership at the section and region levels of the Society, for her commitment to supporting engineering students, and for her academic achievements and community engagement. Danielle was nominated by members of the Philadelphia SWE Chapter and was featured in national SWE’s most recent Magazine and in the program booklet for the Celebrate SWE event.

Rev. Joseph Campellone, OSFS, had a long

and distinguished term as president of Father

Judge High School, and afterward traveled for

a year visiting other successful high schools

around the country. After learning best

practices for academic programs, enrollment

management and fundraising, he returned

and shared that information with Father

Judge and the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education. We are

fortunate that he has brought his knowledge and experience to

Saint Basil Academy, and he offers these first suggestions to our

graduates to Help Us Grow:

• Donate to our Basilian Fund Annual Appeal

• Help us to connect alumnae businesses and corporations to

the two Pennsylvania Tax Credit Programs (EITC and OSTC)

• Participate in sponsorship of our events
