WORKING AT THE OHIOHISTORICAL SOCIETY

ed.note: this articlewas written by AnnaVanko, a third year historymajor.

My internship with the Ohio Social StudiesResource CenterOSSRCbeganin Januaryof 2007. In the autumnI hadreceivedanemail advertisinga numberof availableinternshipsthroughthe Ohio HistoricalSocietyOHS, anddecidedtherewasnotime like the presentto apply. With the helpof a studentworker anda counselorin theArts and SciencesOffice of CareerServices,I updatedandimprovedmy resumeas wellas createda cover letter. CareerServicesalso tookcareto sendin my applicationonce I had completedit.

I appliedfor threedifferent positionswiththe OHS, but whenthe volunteercoordinator reviewed myresume, shebelievedI would be mosthelpful to Amber

Hufford, the coordinatorof the OSSRC. Iinterviewedwith Ms. Hufford andthenwentthroughan orientationin time to startworkat the beginning of winter quarter.

The purposeof the OSSRCis to provideteacher-reviewed web-basedresourcesthatalign with the Ohio Social Studieseducationstandardsfor gradesK-12. Resourcesaredesignedto fulfill social studiesstandardsinhistory, peoplein societies, geography, economics, government, andcitizenshiprights and responsibilities. Myjob as anintern wasto try andidentify 96instructional resources and192 contentresourcesfor eachof the six areasfor grades3-5. Thebiggeststruggleof the entireprocesswas to find resourcesfrom crediblesites. If Wikipedlawas consideredacredible source, thisjob would havebeenmuch easier.

I internedfor 12-15 hoursa week dependingon my own andAmber’s schedule,Theinternshiptechnicallywent through onlywinter quarter;however, the project I hadbeenassignedwas not due tobe finisheduntil May. I decidedto see theprojectthrough to the end. While I wasworking ongrades3-5, the decisionwas madefor theOSSRCto begin work on grades9-10. Aspart of the grades9-10 project, Amberallocatedmoney for hiring an assistantto dodataentry. Sheoffered me the job first, sayingthat I would be paid $12 perhour forup to 200 hours.

In the middle of April, I beganlogginghoursas anofficial employeeof the OSSRC.Working on grades9-10 wasquite differentfrom grades3-5, mostlybecausethe criteriafor the new resourceswere sodifferent. TheOhio Departmentof Educationhadrecentlycreateddifferent teachingmodelsin whichwe weresupposedto separateresourcesintovarious themes andfind additional onestofill in the gaps. Though it was notnecessarilypart of my job, I also continuedto help identify resourcesas well as helpgraderesourcesandwrite reviews. Thisjobcontinuedthroughoutthe summer,in which

my hoursrangedfrom 10-20 hours a week, dependingon how much neededto befinished within a given time frame.

While it is not my intentionto go intoeducationafter college,I still havefound animmenseamountof accomplishmentandsatisfactionwith what I havelearnedandhavebeenableto accomplish. I have beentold that I understandandknow moreaboutthe social studies educationsystemthanmostOhio social studiesteachers! It was anexcellentfirst internship. I know that I havea wonderful personfor a recommendation, and I havebeentold that I am the go-topersonwhen moredataentryjobs comeupfor the OSSRC.
