program to assist in decision-making about ways to improve the program and how best to use resources. Program evaluation is about: -Describing the program -Documenting what was actually implemented -Describing program participant characteristics -Demonstrating the impact of the program The purpose of this course is to introduce the terms and concepts involved in program evaluation as well as the necessary steps involved in completing effective program evaluations.

Description: The Health PEI 120-Day Planning and Performance Cycle was implemented in January 2014

by the Executive Leadership Team to ensure that key strategic priority areas are aligned with the work currently underway in each division. The 120-Day Cycle focuses on five priority areas identified by each division encompassing different projects and initiatives with the aim of creating sustainable change. This course will provide an introduction to the cycle, how it is used and how it can be applied to project development.

Objectives: Current application of the cycle to projects included under divisional priority areas

Development of projects using the 120 day cycle: project charter, planning and assessment of a project in 120 days

The use of project information for planning purposes at the divisional and executive level Development of a team planning session using the cycle Cycle alignment with the strategic plan Work being completed by other health jurisdictions using this cycle

How the learning can be applied in the workplace:

Participants will able to use this planning and performance model to develop future projects in their workplace.

Description: Complaint management is comprised of both administrative and clinical processes. Health

PEI Policy and Legislation dictate the timeframe and manner of response, while the way we respond to patients and clients can be central to their understanding of their own health and their ability to heal or maintain well-being. This workshop seeks to identify the considerations and obligations that managers and directors need to balance when addressing patient/client/family concerns and complaints.

Objectives: By the end of the session it is anticipated that participants will understand:

an extension of our duty of care to patients/clients. Issues when patients/clients are aggressive and the protection of staff may be an

issue when addressing complaints. Also, grief as an issue with families, will be explored.

It is anticipated that information sharing by participants concerning the handling of concerns and complaints from their own sites and divisions will also be helpful for participants.

The course will work through such questions as:

There are so many pieces of data – what do I pay attention to? How do I make sense of this information? How do I come up with a meaningful metric? How often should I be reviewing stats for my program/service? How do I use trending information to inform decisions in my work area?

Participants will be working in small groups with Health Information Specialists to work through examples of data and statistics to support informed decisions. The course presenters will develop exercises based on examples from participants’ program areas.

Critical thinking will be applied through the workshop. Examples could be issues such as: needing to improve access to your service, or improving risk of falls or improving patient flow. Description: All PEI health care providers - public and private - will be subject to new legislation in 2015.

This new legislation, Health Information Act, will govern the collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposition of personal health information in PEI. This session will give you the highlights of the new Act and will help you to understand your obligations under the Act.

Objectives: what your obligations under this new law

what is new or different what a ‘custodian’ and ‘agent’ is what will happen if you contravene the Act


the new Act will apply to all employees of Health PEI it will be important for all employees to understand their obligations under the Act

Description: Building a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace is a training module designed by the PEI Public Service Commission. The module builds manager and senior manager diversity awareness and understanding of diversity management in the workplace. The training also addresses the areas of diversity management responsibilities such as accountability, leadership, organizational support and diversity related conflict resolution, communication etc. The training is mainly focused on raising awareness of an increasing diverse workforce and growing Island diverse population. This training is intended to increase the understanding of diversity by identifying and clarifying definitions of diversity, diversity management practices, workplace diversity concepts and & diversity related key terms.

Objectives: To enhance knowledge of participants resulting in an increased level of appreciation for diversity and increased familiarity with workplace diversity.

To learn how diversity issues impact us in our daily interaction and in the workplace. To generate open, honest, and frank dialogue through sharing information and active

participation. To have identified personal goals. To provide participants with information on rationale of Workforce Diversity Policy,

legislative framework, and human rights act etc. To achieve an understanding of the benefits of a diverse labour force. To attain a commitment to change and progress by valuing differences


Managers will have a clear understanding of diversity definitions, dimensions and importance of diversity management and inclusiveness in the workplace

Acknowledge people’s differences and recognize these differences as valuable Managers will apply the knowledge of different issues (managing diversity of employees,

communication, leadership, conflict resolution related to diversity and some ways on how to approach them, implement different practices etc.

Learn the necessary skill and practical tips required for mangers in the management process

Examine their division’s existing policies, practices, and procedures and implement or change rules and strategies in diversity management

Learn best practices on diversity implementation Make personal actions commitment to diversity

Target Participants: Managers / senior managers with supervisory responsibilities, policy and HR areas etc.
