How is your leadership measuring up?

It’s time to review your leadership progress

For the most part, leadership is learned – leadership success is a formula – a strategy. By focusing on your development and taking the right steps, you’ll exponentially improve your chances in becoming a more effective leader. There aren’t any guarantees - but it’s a lot more useful that ‘hoping, wishing and waiting’ for ‘things’ to happen.

‘Things’ don’t happen – you make it happen. ‘It’ doesn’t work – you work ‘it’. Sharon Pearson.

Leadership is journey of self-development and growth. For your development needs to be met, it’s essential you have a clear awareness of where you’re at; what you want to achieve; what you need to get there; how you are progressing; what needs to change; and what will prevent you from getting there.

You also need to know how to recognise when you are succeeding.

So what progress have you made?

Great insight comes from asking useful questions. The following nine leadership questions will enable you to self-reflect on the progress you’ve made in your leadership over the last 12 months. The questions will take about 20-30 mins to answer – so lock yourself away somewhere quiet with no distractions. It’s

iimportant to be honest with yourself: to see yourself for who you are – rather than who you want to be. If you want another reference point, ask someone else for their feedback where you believe the feedback will be honest and objective.

Give yourself a score

I invite you to give yourself a score out of 10 (1 – no progress through to 10 – outstanding progress) for each area to highlight your strengths and stretches.

90% of leadership is self-awareness. Leadership is an inside job first

From the insights you generate, think about where your leadership development focus needs to be for next year, and for what purpose.

Remember to take time to celebrate your successes and achievements this year. Feel free to pass this ready reckoner on to your colleagues and friends.

Here’s to your leadership success.

Your Self-leadership90% of effective leadership is self-leadership. We can only be for others who we are for ourselves. For things to get better, we need to get better. We can’t affect change in others, unless we’ve experienced it first.

What is your proudest achievement this year? What personal strengths did you leverage or what stretches did you address?

John F. Kennedy once said that leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. In today’s increasingly complex and ambiguous business world, his words have never been more fitting.

What did you do that was brave and bold? What did you learn about yourself?

How is your leadership style developing? Did you lead in such a way that your entire team was clear about what you stood for? If so, how did you share or demonstrate that to your team?

How did you engage and inspire your team? Was everyone clear on the direction you were taking the team? Was every team member clear on what their individual success looked like with you?

To what degree was your focus on the day to day challenges versus the next improvements and future opportunities?

Your team leadership

As a leader, you will be judged by your results. More importantly, you’ll be remembered for who you were for others.

To what degree did you stay on your ‘main game’ and not get side tracked? Did you achieve your top priority (2-4) goals?

What proof do you have of developing your team through coaching and mentoring? What’s this change opened up?

What relationships have you strengthened? What is your evidence you are gaining influence within your team, across your peer group, and upward across more senior leaders?

What difficult conversations have you had this year that you haven’t had previously?
