How to Diagnose Terminal Illness In Your Church? (Adapted from an article written by Danny R. Von Kanel) Ten Diagnoses for Determining a Sick Church and Solutions to Help Stop the Bleeding. (Part 1) 1. More people are going out the back door than are coming in the front door. Average the present loss per year. Divide that number by active members. Add that number to 2011 and you have the approximate year your church will close her doors. Solution: Ask why. Now address the symptoms honestly! Is it population decline? If not, here are 9 possible solutions. (The other 4 will be in Part 2 next month.) 2. The church is predominantly senior adults. If the senior adults outnumber the other age groups, it’s a sign membership will continue to decrease. Solution: Change how you do worship and be relevant and valuable to younger families. Most people enter the church through the worship service. Invite younger families with music they are familiar with. What radio station or type of music do you listen to all week? 3. “We are a declining inner city church.” Inner city churches struggle to maintain their historical, cultural identity. Solution: Decide to reach the ethnic groups around you, or relocate. Just a reminder: Matthew 28:18-20 Why are you where God has placed you? 4. We can barely pay our bills. Financial issues may expose the value of your ministry. Cutting ministries or staffing only weakens the possibilities for growth. Solution: Conduct an intentional stewardship emphasis or reach more people and train them to give biblically and joyfully. Conduct a financial freedom program and see the receipts increase. Make sure all ministry is valuable people give to what they view as significant! 5. “We have large monetary reserves designated to the church and people have quit giving.” People tend to withhold gifts if there is nothing challenging to give to. Solution: Give the money away to missions, relief efforts or to the needy. Giving away large sums of money rarely destroys a church, if fact, it tends to produce greater giving. Keynote Speaker: Danny Forshee Sponsored by: Shelby-Doches, Rusk-Panola, Neches River & Unity Baptist Associations LEADERSHIP MATTERS…Especially in a Challenging Economy When the economy is struggling the church will soon feel the pinch. Many of our Associational churches have had to make adjustments in response to an economic climate which has seen loss of jobs and struggling families. Some time ago I read an article entitled the Recession Proof Church by Patrick Johnson, Sr. VP of Church Services for The National Christian Foundation and Jim Sheppard, CEO of Generis , a consulting firm promoting the cause of generosity for God’s kingdom. Below you will find an excerpted version that I trust will be an encouragement to you in the days ahead. Whether debated privately in our hearts or very publicly in our church halls, one of the most pressing issues facing churches today is the economy. Studies show that a poor economy doesn't always mean less cash in your collection plate. In February 2008, the Christian research group Empty Tomb Inc., unveiled a study showing that, in the 6 recessions we’ve had since 1968, donations by church members declined in three and increased in three others. Another study by Giving USA Foundation found that religion- related charitable giving fell only slightly in 6 of the 11 total years that the U.S. has experienced recession since 1968. So clearly, there are factors other than the economy that affect the way your members give. But what are they? A look at some generous churches across the nation reveals that internal factors can have much more impact on giving than external factors like the economy. While these churches come from all denominations and regions of the U.S. with very different worship styles, facilities, and congregants, they all have a few very important things in common. These characteristics are the biggest keys to a recession-proof church. Key #1: Vision - Your church’s vision of ministry is the one factor that will determine everything else. What does your church bring to your little corner of the kingdom with a passion like no other? If you know without a doubt and can articulate it with clarity, then you have a God-given reason to exist. Key #2: Culture - It all starts with vision, but there is another element that is just as important —culture. “Even the greatest vision will die in a toxic culture,” says leadership consultant Sam Chand. How to Influence Your Church’s Culture 1. Focus on the Gospel. Giving must be connected to the gospel. Plans for ministry expansion must be a logical extension of God’s vision for how your church should carry out the gospel. Any project that does not meet this criterion will not connect in the hearts of your people and, as a result, will not connect with their treasure either. There must be a clear explanation of how anything you are asking them to fundbe it buildings, programs, or peoplewill help accomplish the ultimate goal of helping lost and hurting people. 2. Become a generous pastor and build up generous leaders. Generous churches are led by generous pastors and leaders. You can’t take people where you haven’t been, especially in the area of finances, which so often gets a bad rap in the church context. A key question to ask yourself as the church leader is, “If everyone in my church gave like I do, would that be a good thing for the kingdom?” 3. Foster trust and transparency. A culture of generosity is built upon a foundation of transparency. Consider what is communicated to your people about the church budget. Do they really know how money is being spent in the church? How is that communicated? Pulling the veil off finances, budgets, and board discussions will go a long way toward creating trust and building members’ confidence in giving. 4. Adopt generosity as a core value. An excellent example of this is Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, Tennessee where about 3 years ago they struggled with the question of whether to do another capital campaign to fund expansion. Like many churches, they found that a campaign motivated people for a short season but had very little lasting impact on most of their members’ giving. After much prayer, the church felt like God was calling them to adopt gener osity as a core value of the church and to call all people to “raise the tide” of generosity at their church to what they deemed the “training wheels of giving,” the traditional tithe of 10%. The church developed a campaign known as “G3” (generational, global, generous), but instead of calling for a three-year pledge, the church called every steward to raise their giving by 1 percent per year until the average giving of the congregation based on per member projected income reached 10 percent. At the start of G3, the average annual giving per member at Brentwood was 4.6 percent. Over three years, per-member giving increased by 19.1 percent. The church estimates that if it can reach its goal within ten years, it will be able to finish building all of its campus, pay off all existing debt, and give over $70 million away to kingdom work globally. 5. Start a generosity ministry that reaches every steward in your church. The cornerstone of a generous culture is stewardship education. Pastor Scott Ridout of Sun Valley Community Church in Arizona explains, “One of the greatest paradigm shifters I see among my people when it comes to fi nancial faithfulness and generosity is this simple principle: God owns it all. When they begin to grasp this, things change.” And it’s important to recognize the different types of stewards in your church and minister to them uniquely. Here’s a way to break down the different kinds of givers in our churches: SCARCE STEWARDS. Whether because of poor habits or a background of poverty, these members usually need immediate help. It’s essential to address their current needs, but it’s equally important to uncover the root of many financial woes. Debt has endangered many normal middle-class families to the point of scarcity. That’s why many churches provide financial counseling through lay volunteers while using scriptural small group stewardship studies such as Crown Financial Ministries (www.crown.org ), Good $ense (www.goodsenseministry.com ), or Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (www.daveramsey.com ) to teach basic biblical principles regarding money. STABLE STEWARDS. David Wills, president of The National Christian Foundation, says the needs of stable stewards should not be overlooked, especially in the coming years as baby boomers grow older. “We are in for the greatest transfer of wealth America has ever known,” says Wills, “and most of it will be from average families who have never made more than $80,000 a year. Churches could be the main beneficiaries of the wealth that stable stewards pass on, but they have to be educated on how to continue their legacy of giving to their church after life.” Good sources to help in this area include Kingdom Advisors (www.kingdomadvisors.org ) and The National Christian Foundation (www.nationalchristian.com ). SURPLUS STEWARDS. While those without money are in precarious situations, those entrusted with much could be in the most danger. The power of wealth is one of the greatest temptations. Pastors often overlook the needs of wealthier members because they don’t want to show preferential treatment, but these surplus stewards are also in need of genuine ministry. Pleasant Valley Church in Kansas City takes groups of surplus stewards every year to a special conference designed for high-capacity givers by Generous Giving (www.generousgiving.org ). 6. Put your money where your mission is. Communicating mission and vision goes beyond printing your mission statement in the bulletin. The main problem is that churches aren’t clearly connecting their mission with the daily programs of the church. For example, if your mission is “passionately reaching out to unbelievers,” that should be clearly represented in the budget. Does your spending match your words? A Time of Opportunity. In trying times, the world needs the church like never before. More than any other cause in your community, your church can be a steady beacon of hope as the environment around you grows more and more restless. Your neighbors may be driven to their most open spiritual moments in years due to personal financial stress. It is a terrible price to miss this rare opportunity to minister to them because your church lacked the financial means to do it. No matter what size or shape your church might be, what’s happening in your pulpit will always be more important than what’s happening on Wall Street. The good news is that the keys to a recession-proof church lie within reach. Like the pastors cited above, you and your lay leaders can strive to help your church find its vision and culture of generosity. This is not a time to be ruled by fear. Plant and water the seeds of generosity, and trust God to work on people’s hearts (1 Cor. 3:6). “A culture of generosity emerges out of a culture of the gospel, people give when their hearts are melted by the overwhelming gift of God’s love and grace.” … Schuster
