New Board Matching process update!Recently we reported on the collaboration with Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) of Cleveland to initiate a process in Stark County to place ‘Non-Leadership Graduates’ on local non-profit boards. Twenty-four non-profit agencies participated in a ‘needs assessment’ session conducted by BVU staff along with Stephanie Snow Werren or myself. Two executive directors share their thoughts.

“My initial impression of the BVU presentation at the Timken Company was one of surprise and inspiration: such a project should have been initiated many years ago. . . . BVU is determined not merely to fill board positions, but to assure that the newcomers are adequately prepared to assume their board responsibilities. . . . Their in-depth questions stimulated a profound exploration of issues and problems with the various boards in my own experience, and their obvious determination to place individuals capable of finding solutions. . . . It was a fabulous experience for me!” - M. J. Albacete (1st), Executive Director, Canton Museum of Art

“The session with the BVU staff was an opportunity for me to check for clarity in the reasons the Greater Stark County

Urban League exists in the community, how we intend to operate in the future and where we have shortfalls and obstacles. . . . It would have been an excellent opportunity for the entire board to go through and to give their perspective together.

I wish there had been a tape recorder in the room so I could replay the questions they asked and the answers I gave. . . . The BVU staff then put me through a short, “One Minute Manager” session to point out some quick fixes to some fundamental problems or potential problems. I have attended a lot of management training, team building, and board development training sessions; few of them gave me as much practical suggestions as did this one.” - Vincent E. Watts, Interim President/CEO, Greater Stark County Urban League

Next steps include the referral of individuals to the agencies. Let us know of your questions, comments and interest in learning more about this process for your business or organization.

The time togive is NOW Please support the Leadership Stark County 2010 Annual Fund.

The Annual Fund Drive 2010 is closing in on its goal of $50,000. With your support in the final stretch I know we can reach our goal and continue to meet the needs of Stark County. LSC continues to provide a core of motivated leaders with a lifelong commitment to community service through training in leadership skills and education about the community in our 5 programs.

• We have graduated over 700 community minded individuals from the Signature Program.

• We have raised the level of awareness of Stark county assets and needs.

• We have developed a Spotlight Stark county Program for younger professionals.

• We have become the “go-to” agency for local non-profit board placement.

• We have kept tuition affordable and increased scholarship assistance.

Please support Leadership Stark County this year. Go to www. Leadershipstarkcounty.org or call 330-458-2095 to make a pledge and help us get to our goal by the close of the Fund Drive on September 30.
