Leadership Essentials Certificate - Syllabus
The Leadership Essentials Certificate consists of three units (each unit contains five lessons):
Unit 1: Responsibility of Leadership Unit 2: Managing for Results Unit 3: Managing Teams and Making Better Decisions
Certificate Description
There is no “one best way” to lead. To be a successful leader, you must be able to match your leadership style to each unique situation. In the Leadership Essentials Certificate you will examine theories and learn methodologies that outline the responsibilities of leadership, proven management methods and best practices for leading effective teams that produce results.
Leadership skills are critical in the 21st century, and applicable in all vocations. Any student, from any discipline, that is aspiring to be in a leadership role will benefit from this certificate. Students should enroll in this certificate to:
further hone leadership skills and learn what types of people become leaders. learn how and why people are motivated to satisfy needs, and the sources of job satisfaction. compare the pros and cons of utilizing teams. further enhance your decision-making techniques and identify some common mistakes in
decision making.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this certificate, you will be able to:
Determine and describe the responsibilities of leadership Identify and discuss job performance, job satisfaction, and motivation. Describe the best methods for decision-making and identify some commonly made mistakes in
the decision making process
Meet Your Professor Michael Crant, Ph.D.
Professor in the Department of Management and Organization, University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business Michael Crant is senior faculty member in the Department of Management at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business. He is internationally known for his research on proactive behavior at work and has developed the “proactive personality scale,” which is the most frequently used measure of proactivity in the field of management. He holds both a BS in Business Administration and an MBA from the University of Florida, and earned his PhD in Organizational Behavior from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Unit 1: Responsibility of Leadership
Unit 1 Description:
Unit 1 will address five main questions:
1. What is Leadership and why is it important to followers? 2. Are leaders born and not made? 3. What do leaders do? Is there one style that will always be effective? 4. What is Transformational Leadership and what are the keys to its success? 5. What are contemporary approaches to leadership?
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
Define leadership and describe its importance. Compare and contrast the relationship between personality traits and leadership. Describe the role of a leader and analyze various leadership styles that can be used to fulfill
that role. Define Transformational Leadership and illustrate the key success factors. Describe and analyze various contemporary approaches to leadership.

Unit 2 will address five main questions:
1. What are the determinants of job performance, and how are people motivated to satisfy needs?
2. What are the sources of job satisfaction? 3. What are the most effective ways to link consequences to behaviors and what are the types of
consequences that leaders use? 4. Why do we care about fairness in the workplace? What is Equity Theory? 5. How is self-confidence related to goals and goal setting?

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
Discuss the determinants of job performance, and explain how people are motivated to satisfy needs.
Describe the sources of job satisfaction. Determine the most effective ways to link consequences to behaviors utilizing proven methods
of leadership. Explain Equity Theory and its impact on fairness in the workplace. Define and describe the SMART Framework and its correlation to self-confidence.
