BTSA COACH

Learning Focused Relationships - Day 1 Date: Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Time: 8:30 — 3:30

Location: McClymonds Room 107

Audience: New BTSA Induction Coaches Presenters: Kafi Payne

Stipend: $22.99/hour On-track PD ID code: PD5347 (Directions for registering are found on page 4)

Course Description: Based on the best selling book, Mentoring Matters: A Practical Guide to Learning-Focused Relationships, this training explores the important relationship between Coaches and the beginning teachers they support. The sessions move BTSA Coaches from simply handholding and advice dispensing to becoming skillful growth agents. The materials and learning experiences offer practical tools, specific templates, and technical tips for BTSA Coaches to increase the effectiveness of their practice.

Topics Include:

Establishing learning-focused relationships

Examine three critical functions of learning-focused relationships; offering support, creating challenge and facilitating professional vision. Learn how to balance the three functions by addressing the immediate needs of beginning teachers with a longer-term view of growth.

Navigating a continuum of interaction

Explore three stances of learning-focused interaction: consulting to offer expertise and provide technical resources, collaborating for shared planning and problem-solving, and coaching, a nonjudgmental interaction that develops decision-making skills and supports reflection. Learn specific strategies related to each stance and skills for flexibly moving between stances.

Inviting Thinking

Refine a toolkit for increasing willingness, confidence and skill in the thinking that drives instructional decision-making and reflection on practice. Learn to apply verbal and nonverbal skills to learning-focused conversations that support the growth and development of beginning teachers.

Applying templates for learning-focused conversations

Employ templates to guide mentor/novice conversations about instructional planning, reflecting and problem solving. Learn to use time-effective structures in one-to-one and small group interactions that focus conversations, maintain momentum and develop targeted thinking skills.

Providing feedback

Develop methods for standards-driven conversations that provide feedback to improve instructional decision-making. Learn how to foster teachers' capacities for analyzing gaps between learning standards and present levels of performance by using data to focus the conversation.

Please Note: For this course, there is a 2-part registration, one with OUSD and one with No Nonsense Nurturer. Once teacher enrolls through OUSD, the New Teacher Support Office will send other registration information. On-track PD ID code: PD5414

Course Description: Lee Canter and his research team coined the term ‘No Nonsense Nurturer’ to describe the persona of highly effective teachers. These teacher’s students achieved at least 1.5 years growth and were deemed effective by stakeholders (parents, students, colleagues, administrators etc.) In essence, No-Nonsense Nurturers have a no-nonsense attitude when it comes to having high expectations for their students’ classroom behavior and academic achievement that is motivated by a desire to ensure every student’s success. At the same time, No-Nonsense Nurturers recognize that they will never be able to reach many of their students unless they make it a top priority to go out of their way to “nurture” strong relationships with all students, especially those who are challenging. This online course teaches research-based strategies of No-Nonsense Nurturers to support the development of safe and effective classrooms.

in all classroom and non-classroom settings. This training will focus on strengthening classroom systems and provide practical strategies that address the behaviors that interfere with engaged instruction. Presenters will unpack the escalation cycle for behavior and model how to effectively de-escalate students using positive behavioral intervention and support. Presenters will share an evidence-based model for de-escalation and prepare us to respond to disruptions with Prevention - increasing the likelihood that students will be productively and successfully engaged in classroom activities; Intervention - catching problem behavior at onset & interrupting behavior chain before it escalates; Crisis Response - having a practiced plan in place for de-escalating unsafe behavior in the classroom; and Reflection - reviewing responses to strengthen future prevention and intervention plans.

Visual Art with Attitudinal Healing Connection On-track PD ID code (PD5358): The

Self as Super Hero workshop is based on the curriculum, inspired by our current need for heroes for our children, youth and communities. The heroes we need are defined as exceptional individuals or beings that inspire, protect, and serve, standing and taking action for justice and for the well-being of the environment, people, and animals. The hope begins with the process of imagination to envision and create the Self as Super Hero. This workshop will take participants through an abridged journey of recreating themselves as super heroes. This will include identifying personal, local, national and global heroes. It will also ask participants to identify their strengths and talents which will be translated to superpowers to help solve problems they see in the community/world.

Puppetry & Storytelling with Debbie Koppman On-track PD ID code (PD5359):

Participants will create a variety of puppets, masks, and books, using origami, paper sculpture, recycled materials, and paper maché. Teachers will create many hands-on models of puppets and masks of varying degrees of complexity to take back to their classrooms. Additionally, their handmade books will contain ideas for writing, generated by their artwork. We will be guiding teachers towards concrete, practical ways to make visual arts and language arts integration a real possibility in their classrooms. The workshop will include some projects from last years’ workshop, along with many different materials and projects, so teachers who participated last year are welcome to come back!

Stop Motion Animation with Trena Noval On-track PD ID code (PD5360): This

Working in collaborative teams, participants will create an of their own stop-motion animation of their own design or from curriculum they are teaching and develop discuss and share ideas about how to take what they learned back to their classrooms to create their first animation

in the coming school year!

**You will need to bring a digital still camera and MAC laptop with iMovie for this class. We

will be working in small groups so not everyone needs a laptop.

Dance with Luna Dance Institute On-track PD ID code (PD5361): Teachers are the

dance-makers- that create, perform, and respond to their own dance works and the dance works of their colleagues. Workshop participants will make dances which focus on the body moving in space, energy, and time- the core element of dance. From this foundation, teachers will explore how to work with the dance content at different grade levels and how to integrate dance learning into their classroom.

Elementary Classroom Music with Sarah Willner On-track PD ID code (PD5362):

Teachers will end the workshop having experienced the connection, focus, and awareness of participation in percussion ensembles. They will be more connected and confident with their own singing voices. They will gain familiarity with classroom percussion instruments. They will have a wealth of culturally relevant games, songs, poems, and dances to take back to school with them in the fall, and will have explored making sounds with their body, and music with homemade instruments. Significantly, they will feel confident with the Orff Schulwerk process for working musically in their classroom, especially with literacy.

Theatre in the classroom with Eric Engdahl On-track PD ID code (PD5363): The

activities and exercises are standards based. The basic format of learning is to introduce the activity; do the activity; reflect on the activity; reflect on how the activity can be applied in a classroom setting; reflect on how it can applied for performance; and finally reflect on how the exercise relates to other activities. Ideally a participant also has a chance to lead the activity so s/he can experience it as a teacher, as well. The activities are sequential and build a series of skills.
