Protective Coatings - Exposed Barrage Gates
Denso Steelcoat 1000 System Protects the Vaal RiverBarrage Gates
The Vaal River barrage Gates situated between the provinces ofGauteng and the Free State in South Africa are operated by the RandWater Authority. The 36 gates built in 1920 are used for providingwater to the gold and coal mines in the vicinity.
The Rand Water Authoritywanted to upgrade the coatingused to protect the barrage gatesand required a long termsolution for the upstreamsurface, which is subject todamage from floating debrisespecially during floods.
Denso South Africa,recommended the use of heavyduty Denso 1000 PGF, thetoughest coating available, dueto its success on a previousproject for the Engen refinery inDurban. The first seven gateshave now been coated andinstalled successfully.

Australia
A major power generator required a coating for their asbestos slurrypipes. The pipe already had a sealing coat of PVA, however theoriginal liquid topcoat was starting to fail with large areas of thecoating delaminating away from the pipe after a few years ofservice life.
They required a coating thatwould reduce surfacepreparation and would have theability to be applied over theexisting failing coating.
Denso White Steelcoat 300was chosen for the project dueto its uv stability and minimalsurface preparation. The coatingsystem comprised; DensoColourtape Mastic, Denso WhiteColourtape and Denso WhitePVC Outerwrap.

Denso Steelcoat 300 SystemProtects Asbestos Slurry Lines
It requires no water wash downof the substrate nor is any sprayequipment required. The Systemalso does not require a primingcoat and the tape gives a
consistent coating thickness. Application was carried out
by a Denso approved LicensedApplicator and the coating camewith a 10 year warranty.
The work carried out in June2001 is only the first stage ofthe project and included 6pipelines to be coated.

Protective Coatings - Protection of Exposed Steelwork
Denso Steelcoat 400 SystemProtects Steel Structures inJapanese Hotel
Work was recently carried out using the Denso Steelcoat 400 Systemon the exposed steelwork on top of a hotel building situated inNara City, Japan.
The steel beams were gritblasted to remove all loose andflaking material and prepare thesubstrate for the new protectivecoating. They were then coatedwith Denso Penetrating Primerand allowed to dry. This wasfollowed by wrapping the beamsfirst with Denso ConformingTape on awkward contours andthen with Denso Ultraseal Tape.
To give extra UV protectionas well as an attractive finish,the whole structure was thenovercoated with a pure acrylictopcoat.
The resulting system will nowgive long lasting protectionagainst corrosion to the highlyexposed steelwork.

Protective Coatings - Exposed Pipebridge
Denso Steelcoat Protection forMiddlesborough Pipebridge
Northumbrian Water has refurbished a pipebridge at theMiddlesborough site of chemical producers Wilton International thatcarries a 24 inch water main over a rail track, the site’s mainhaulage road and process ducts. Denso Steelcoat 100, 400 and 700Systems have been chosen for the long term protection of the 57metre pipebridge.
Specialist contractors for thisproject are Hertel UK Ltd,whose main UK base is atMiddlesborough. Hertel UKremoved all previous coatings onthe pipebridge, under anenvironmentally closed conditionand prepared the surface to theSA 21⁄2 standard before applyingthe Steelcoat Systems.
The Denso Steelcoat Systemscomprise: Denso Hi-TackPrimer, Denso Profiling Masticto smooth all contours, DensoHi-Tack Tape, Denso UltrasealTape and finished with a layerof Denso Acrylic Topcoat. Forextra protection on the guardrails and valve box, coats ofDenso ST Epoxy GF andWeathershield were applied.

International contractors Lafarge have just completed a majorreconstruction of some 3km of the A5 trunk road near Dunstable,where the surface was at the point of breaking up due to constantheavy traffic. The work was carried out for the URS consortium.
Denso Paving Tape was usedfor surface sealing of the seamsprior to overlaying with theasphalt base-wearing course.Denso Paving Tape is a coldapplied synthetic fibre reinforcedbituminous tape protected with adisposable release film. Itprovides a moisture barrier thatreduces water penetration intothe sub grade, thereby retardingcracks appearing in the newoverlay.
Contractors Shaw-Seal Ltd have recently carried out renovation workon approximately 1500m of the rapid exit taxiways off the runwayat Gatwick Airport for the British Airports Authority.
Shaw-Seal have cut out wornareas of the special asphaltwearing surface to locate anycracks in the concrete slabsunderneath. Winn & Coales’Densoband is then appliedvertically against the edges ofthe sound surface areas beforeinfilling with Zebrascreedspecialist asphalt base.
Shaw-Seal recommendedDensoband as a result ofprevious experience with thisjointing material at Gatwick aswell as Heathrow and RAFNortholt.
Approved by the BritishAirports Authority and theHighways Agency, Densobandforms a flexible watertight jointbetween hot rolled asphalt andasphalt, concrete and steelwork.Because water, salts, pollutants,weed seeds, etc cannot penetratethe sealed joint it remainsunaffected by extremes oftemperature and furtherdeterioration.
Densoband is applied vertically against the sound surface areas before infilling with Zebrascreed.
Denso Paving Tape is applied over the seams before overlaying with the asphalt base wearing course.

Protective Coatings and Jointing Strips - Highway Construction
Electronic Toll Highway usesTwo Different Forms of Denso Protection
Over the last several years, motorists in Ontario have been able todrive on a new state-of-the -art electronic toll highway which, untilrecently ran from Denso North America’s office in Markham, westapproximately 40kms to the City of Mississauga. Highway 407 hasbecome a tremendous help for anyone not wanting to drive rightinto the most populous city in Canada and then spend most of anhour trying to get away from it.
As this new electronichighway has become popular, sohas the demandfor its’ expansioneven further eastand west. Thismeant a significantincrease not onlyin the constructionof the mainhighwayextensions, butalso in the amountof on off rampsused to connectthe roads thatintersect the highway. This hasalso meant that the highwaywould divide some veryresidential areas where waterpipelines run from one side ofthe highway to the other.
It was at several of the mainhighway intersections whereDenso LT Tape, Paste andProfiling Mastic were used toprotect hundreds of feet ofductile iron water pipe fromcorrosion. All of the 40 footlengths of pipe were wrappedby hand outside of the trenchand then lowered by excavating
equipment down 20 feet,connected and then each joint
was wrapped with Denso LTTape. Once all of the water pipeswere installed using Densocorrosion protection,construction of the on and offramps began.
Denso was called on again tosupply Densoband asphalt
jointing strips as the pavingcrews began to pave the milesof new roadway. Existingsections of highway werejoined with new approachramps using 8mm Densobandto seal a number of the roadjoints. Densoband was also usedto seal portions of the bridgedecks that joined the approachramps and also many areaswhere the lanes were widenedto accommodate new roadaccess points.
The versatility andperformance of our productsshows why Denso continues tobe the leader in corrosionprotection and sealingtechnology.
The pipelengths were wrapped outside the trench then loweredinto position and joined together. The joints were then wrappedwith Denso LT Tape.

Protal 7200 Liquid EpoxyProtects Girth Welds on NewPipeline Construction
Corrosion Protection - Girth Welds
Many major oil and gas companies have used Protal 7200 to protectgirth welds on push-rack and land applications.
Protal 7200 has been selectedas the coating of choice forpush-rack applications duemainly to its extremely fast cureand excellent cathodicdisbondment results. Bypre-heating the surface up to180°F (82°C) the coating wascured in 15 minutes allowing thepipe to be holiday tested andpass over the final rollers on thepush rack system. On landapplications the fast cure is abenefit by allowing thecontractors to backfill at a fasterrate.
Protal 7200 is a two-part100% solids epoxy coating thatcan be applied in one coat up to40mils. The coating exhibitsexcellent cathodic disbondmentresults of 7mm @ 175°F (80°C).Another benefit is high impactand abrasion resistance fordirectional drill applications. Inaddition to its fast cure, Protal
7200 also exhibits excellentadhesion properties and isenvironmentally safe. Test resultswith independent labs and oiland gas companies have provedit to be superior to other liquidcoatings.
Unlike FBE, which requiresexpensive and heavy equipment,Protal 7200 only requires a brushor roller to apply. The costly riskof downtime due to equipmentfailure is eliminated. Due to thesecost savings Protal 7200 is idealfor a variety of field or shopapplications including girthwelds, tie-ins, drillingapplications, station piping,fittings and repairs to FBE.
Denso has an extensive line ofpipeline coatings to protect awide variety of pipelineapplications in almost anyenvironment.

Archco-Rigidon Lining for13⁄4 Million Gallon BP Tank
Industrial Linings - Internal Tank Linings
Maintenance engineers at the BP Coryton, Essex, refinery haverefurbished a massive tank used for holding raffinate. Measuring 95ftin diameter by 44ft at the highest point, the tank holds 39,000 USbarrels of product, which amounts to in excess of 13⁄4 million gallons.
The raffinate tank is rivettedand national contractors DeborahServices Ltd applied a stripe coatof Archco-Rigidon 403D as acaulking to seal and protect therivet heads and joints of the tankwalls. Archco-Rigidon 403Dlining was also applied to theentire floor area of the tank and,as with the walls, was thicknesschecked after application andspark tested to ensure apinhole-free surface.
Archco-Rigidon 403D wasspecified for this projectfollowing its successful use on
several smaller tanks and refineryvessels at Coryton over the pasttwelve months.
The specialist lining is a vinylester based glass flake filledcoating offering excellent longterm corrosion/erosion resistancein highly corrosiveenvironments.
Work in progress inside the 13⁄4 million gallon tank.
