By Jonathan Garris [email protected] St. Thomas High School Football Coach Tim Fitzpatrick said his team will be “ready to play” against Prestonwood Christian Academy next week in Dallas, following a significant victory over Liberty Christian School Saturday Nov. 22. The Eagles defeated the Liberty Christian High School Warriors 20-7, as STH extend- ed their win streak at home to 20. The win also marks the third TAPPS 5A playoff win at home since 2012. However, Fitzpatrick downplayed some of these statistical milestones and said it all came down to the heart and soul of his foot- ball team. “Those kinds of statistics are for the pundits to discuss,” Fitzpatrick said. “Our kids are comfortable playing at home and they love wearing the red.” The Eagles maintained a solid lead over the Warriors, putting up 14 points in the first half and six more in the sec- ond, with the latter six cour- tesy of the team’s kicker Jack Brady. “Putting those six points up on the board near the end defi- nitely allowed us to take a bit of a breath and relax,” Fitzpat- rick said. “It’s not quite as nail biting when you have more than a ten point lead.” Defensively, Fitzpatrick said his team was much bigger than LCHS’s and STH’s defensive line “did a great job of con- trolling the play at the line of scrimmage.” “Not having to do things like blitzing a lot certainly helps our players,” Fitzpatrick said. “It gives some of our cover guys the chance to play their normal routine.” Some of the weather may have also had an impact on the game, as the kickoff was moved from its originally scheduled time in the after- noon to 11 a.m., due to rain and wind. Fitzpatrick said the weather wasn’t as big a factor as some may have thought, and the team effectively moved the ball down the field and wore down the Warriors as the game progressed. Nonetheless, Fitzpatrick said the Eagle’s offense does need to be a “little more clean.” “We had two interceptions and that was a bit of a con- cern,” Fitzpatrick said. “Es- pecially with one of those in- terceptions leading directly to LCS’s only touchdown.” Despite some occasional mistakes Fitzpatrick praised his team for being able to come up big when situations demanded it, including a stand at the goal line on a fourth down. Looking forward to next week’s game against Pres- tonwood Christian Academy, Fitzpatrick said his team will have to focus on slowing down the opponent’s offense. PCA played against Trinity Christian School Friday Nov. 21, which was a matchup that turned into a high scoring affair with a final score of 55-48. “As a defensive guy, those kinds of neighbors give me a headache and make my stom- ach upset,” Fitzpatrick said. “I might have to buy some Pepto Bismol and we have to make sure to do a better job of slow- ing down their offense. They’re very explosive, with a lot of big receivers, so they obviously can get a lot of points.” Fitzpatrick said his Eagles will be ready to take the field once next week arrives, and he looks forward to taking an- other shot at the state champi- onship. “All of the pundits can talk about the stats and the streaks going into the game but it’s all going to come down to who is going to play better Saturday,” Fitzpatrick said. “I promise you this – we will be ready to play.” LIST with a Leader ntegrity F U N E R A L C A R E Direct Cremation $ 895 Saturday, November 29, 2014 • Page 1B www.ComfortKeepers.com/CentralHouston Jan Clark, J.D. For a couple years they went entirely without a win.” The team is already off to a positive start, opening the season 2-0, with a win over Northbrook High School by a score of 53-38 and a decisive win over KIPP Houston Friday Nov. 21 with a score of 70-39. During the game against KIPP, Wall said freshman Quin- ton Hudson gave a standout performance with 16 points, followed by senior Jonathan Garcia-Loza with 15 points and junior Hunter Janacek with 14 points. “Hudson isn’t known as much as he probably should be,” Wall said. “He’s actually playing the most minutes out of anyone on the team so far and his performance that night shows his ceiling is pretty high.” A player like Hudson decid- ing to attend Scarborough also bodes well for the high school in general. “One of the encouraging things about where this pro- gram is and where it’s going is that some of the freshman are choosing to come here rather than some of the neighboring high schools.” For the first win on North- brook, Wall called it a “typi- cal first game,” but one that was still strong defensively and one they would build on in their second game against KIPP Houston. “It wasn’t great but it was good enough,” Wall said. “We have only three guys that played last year on the Varsity team this year and it will take a little while to get settled and get chemistry built.” Wall said the Spartans were picked fourth in the district, which offers a tough schedule including bouts against two teams that are in the top 10 in the state. Wall said his team doesn’t have a particular large amount of depth or size, but plenty of heart. “We have a lot of really good kids that care about each other,” Wall said. Among some of the stand- out players Wall is expect- ing big things from includes Janacek, Garcia-Loza and Jorge Martinez, with the latter two likely taking on leadership roles, mentoring their younger teammates. “Those three are definitely a big part of the heart and soul of the team,” Wall said. Football: St. Thomas High School marches on in post-season

Source: St. Thomas High School’s Official TwitterWhile the numbers behind st. Thomas high school’s successful football season might be exciting for pundits, Coach Tim Fitzpatrick said he is keeping his attention on what will be happening on the field next week against Prestonwood Christian Academy.

Basketball: Scarborough looks to build on previous season’s positives

By Jonathan [email protected]

In just his second year as coach, Martin Wall is hoping to build on the improvements the boys basketball program at Scarborough High School has seen under his leadership.

“Last season we went 11-16 and finished fifth in our dis-trict,” Wall said. “That was a pretty big improvement as they previously had won six games total over six years combined. For a couple years they went entirely without a win.”

The team is already off to a positive start, opening the season 2-0, with a win over Northbrook High School by a score of 53-38 and a decisive win over KIPP Houston Friday Nov. 21 with a score of 70-39.

During the game against KIPP, Wall said freshman Quin-ton Hudson gave a standout performance with 16 points, followed by senior Jonathan Garcia-Loza with 15 points and junior Hunter Janacek

with 14 points.“Hudson isn’t known as

much as he probably should be,” Wall said. “He’s actually playing the most minutes out of anyone on the team so far and his performance that night shows his ceiling is pretty high.”

A player like Hudson decid-ing to attend Scarborough also bodes well for the high school in general.

“One of the encouraging things about where this pro-gram is and where it’s going is that some of the freshman are choosing to come here rather than some of the neighboring high schools.”

For the first win on North-brook, Wall called it a “typi-cal first game,” but one that was still strong defensively and one they would build on in their second game against KIPP Houston.

“It wasn’t great but it was good enough,” Wall said. “We have only three guys that played last year on the Varsity

team this year and it will take a little while to get settled and get chemistry built.”

Wall said the Spartans were picked fourth in the district, which offers a tough schedule including bouts against two teams that are in the top 10 in the state. Wall said his team doesn’t have a particular large amount of depth or size, but plenty of heart.

“We have a lot of really good kids that care about each other,” Wall said.

Among some of the stand-out players Wall is expect-ing big things from includes Janacek, Garcia-Loza and Jorge Martinez, with the latter two likely taking on leadership roles, mentoring their younger teammates.

“Those three are definitely a big part of the heart and soul of the team,” Wall said.

Wall said he and his players have held fourteen practices since starting on Oct. 29, and his philosophy has been stress-ing more of the character de-

velopment side of athleticism.“When you have kids that

want to be good kids first, the basketball side will follow,” Wall said. “We’re spending all of these practices trying to teach these young kids how to handle the competitive na-ture of the game and meet the standards we have for the program.”

The Spartans have high hopes coming into the 2014-15 season, and Wall said he’ll be there every step of the way for his athletes.

“We really want to represent the school and the community and go out there every night and see if we can build on last year,” Wall said.

Coffee lovers, rev your engines. The first LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified Starbucks in Hous-ton is going in at 3017 N. Durham, near Loop 610. Formerly the home of a strip shopping center housing Murphy’s Deli and Computer Wiz, among others, the property was purchased by 2200 Development Partners, LLC last spring. The site has been cleared in preparation for construction.

Mark Carroll, Principal of 2200 Development Partners, said it was an awkward space for multiple tenants and that he’d been hoping to bring a LEED certified Starbucks to Houston for about three years. He owns other properties in Houston but the N. Durham property is the company’s first in The Leader area.

“It was a good piece of property,” Carroll said. “It just need-ed to be repurposed.” He said that the five previous tenants relocated to subsequently make room for one free standing building.

Carroll said that making the Starbucks a LEED certified building was the Seattle-based company’s decision.

“It was their choice, and their preferred choice of many new projects,” Carroll said.

The LEED Starbucks will be the first one in Houston. Star-bucks joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2001 and then worked with them to develop the LEED for Retail pro-gram, which adapts LEED to new construction and retail busi-nesses. Their first LEED certified store was in Hillsboro, Oregon in 2005. Now they have LEED stores in 18 countries.

The new LEED certified Houston store will be about 2,000 square feet with a substantial patio. There are about 50 Star-bucks stores that serve beer and wine in the evening but no word yet if that is a possibility with the Durham location.

“That space is on the ‘going to work side’ of Durham/Shep-herd streets,” Carroll said. “And they are both one way streets, so offering morning beverages probably makes the most sense.”

Carroll said he met with the leadership of the Garden Oaks Maintenance Organization (GOMO) and that they have been receptive to the development.

There has also been excitement, as well as concern about traffic, on social media.

“Good,” wrote one poster on the Shepherd Park Plaza Face-book page. “The one on 43rd is insanely crowded and busy all the time.”

“With the way that traffic backs up on Shepherd in the morn-ings, I’ll never stop in,” wrote another. “Not worth the anxiety to try and cross that traffic.”

Mary Jane Lorkowski lives directly behind the development. “I am concerned about the drive-through along my fence line, the noise and light pollution, potential drainage problems, as well as increased traffic on Durham,” she said. “It remains to be seen whether Starbucks will try to ‘be a good neighbor’ and assist with costs and design implementation necessary to miti-gate those nuisances.”

For The Leader

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Ad-ministrator, Maria Contre-ras-Sweet, announced that the federal agency is part-nering with the National Restaurant Association (NRA) to promote dining out during Small Business Satur-day on November 29th. The partnership will amplify res-taurants during the national push to support our nation’s small businesses on the bus-iest shopping weekend of the year.

“Local restaurants pack a big punch to our nation’s economy, as part of the eco-nomic powerhouse that is American small businesses.

The restaurant industry is projected to add 1.3 million jobs over the next 10 years and to project $683.4 billion in total sales, equaling 4 per-cent of the U.S. GDP,” said SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. “The SBA is proud to partner with the National Restaurant Associ-ation to champion this great sector of American small businesses.”

Dining out on Small Busi-ness Saturday will empha-size the accomplishments of small business restaurants across the country while encouraging consumers to patronize eateries in their neighborhoods. Restaurants are a significant factor in the nation’s economy as the

industry’s economic impact is estimated at $1.8 trillion. Additionally, each dollar spent in restaurants gener-ates an extra two dollars in sales for other industries, spurring economic activity in their communities and across the nation.

“Restaurants provide valuable jobs and careers for more than 13.5 mil-lion people and are strong economic engines in com-munities nationwide,” said Dawn Sweeney, President and CEO, National Restau-rant Association. “While the industry is the nation’s sec-ond-largest private sector employer, the overwhelm-ing majority of restaurants, more than 90 percent, have

fewer than 50 employees. The National Restaurant Association is pleased to join forces with the Small Business Administration to showcase the industry’s critical role in overall small business creation.”

Additionally, the SBA and the NRA are encourag-ing small business owners and community members to share success stories of restaurants in their areas on social media using the hashtag “#DineSmall.” This will allow communities big and small to come together and show their support for entrepreneurs across the country.

To encourage not only the public to dine small,

but also for restaurants to prepare for the busy day, the Small Business Admin-istration will launch a so-cial media campaign called #ShowUsYourMenu. Res-taurants are asked to create a special menu for Small Business Saturday and pro-mote it on Facebook, Twit-ter and other social media sites to spotlight their busi-ness and remind everyone to #DineSmall while they #ShopSmall.

Visit the Small Business Saturday website, at www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small, for a list of participating res-taurants.

For 60 years, The Leader newspaper has been part of your home. From pictures and stories about you, your children and your grandchildren, to re-

porting on the news and events of this community for the past six decades, The Leader has been delivered to your home come rain or shine.

To mark the occasion, we’re throwing a birthday bash and family event for the community, designed to bring as many of you together as possible.

First and foremost, this is a family event, which is why admission is Free. From a snow village to a petting zoo to moon walks, we’ll have enough to keep the kids busy (and happy) for a few hours. Cheap lunches and free birthday cake will be provided, and we’ve got it on good authority that Santa will be on location taking good notes.

But this is more than play time. With a large crowd expected, we’ll have businesses from all over the area, including arts and crafts, that might just take care of a few Christmas shopping trips in one location.

We’re looking forward to seeing so many friends of The Leader over the years, and we hope you and your fam-ily can attend.

It’s that time of year – the holiday season with all its food, fun and shopping, and unfortunately, the season that people’s packages are getting snatched off the porch.

One resident reported on the Oak Forest Homeown-ers Association page that she had two large boxes stolen after a FedEx delivery.

“My patience with these thieves is wearing very thin,” she stated.

Other residents commiser-ated and shared their advice for protecting packages. The Leader asked around too. Here are some tips:

• Have deliveries sent to your work (if possible).

• If you know you are ex-pecting a package and are registered with FedEx or UPS (sign up for “UPS my choice” and “FedEx delivery man-ager”), you can go online and request they hold the pack-age for pick up. You can also designate delivery times and reroute packages. However -

some choices require a fee.• You can also request a

delivery signature, meaning UPS and FedEx can’t deliver a package without a signa-ture.

• If you have a trustwor-thy neighbor home during the day, ask them to accept your packages or watch out for them.

• Place potted plants on the front porch or some other type of coverage that the delivery service can use to place the packages behind them.

For Oak Forest residents, S.E.A.L. can help.

“We tell our residents to always let our 24 hour opera-tions department know when they are expecting a package so our officers can patrol by and check to see if FedEx or UPS has left the package in plain sight,” stated Director of Operations James Alex-ander.

“If so, our officers will move the package to a hid-den area from the road and continue to check on the package until the hom-

eowner arrives. I would also advise to have a box placed on your front porch for your deliveries that can be pad locked by the delivery person once they deliver the pack-age. This keeps the package

out of sight and locked up until you get home. You can use any container that your package would fit in such as an ice chest or any lockable container.”
