he animals, he flood, he ime aboard he ark, and unloading he

ark, none o Noah’s words are recorded. Afer God insruced Noah

o build an ark, Noah had o decide wheher o rus God enough

o ollow God’s insrucions. “Noah did everyhing exacly as God

You have a letter to take hometo your parents that explains more about our mission project. Natural disastersoccur around the world every year—earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.—leaving people displaced from their homes and struggling with basic needs. Thousands of homeswere destroyed or damaged, and many livestock animals that belonged to Heifer’sproject participants were lost or killed. Two weeks later another strong earthquakecaused even more damage. Heifer has created the Nepal Relief and RecoveryFund to provide money for supporting the families during their long term effortsto rebuild their communities, replace livestock, and participate in needed trainingopportunities. The money you donate will be given to the Nepal Relief and RecoveryFund.

han he ory days and nighs on he ark. Including he ime i ook or he waers o

recede, Noah and his amily were on he ark or abou a year.

Afer inorming Noah o he plan o flood he earh, God made a covenan wih

Noah. In ancien Israel, covenans made beween groups or individuals were a way o

lie. These agreemens, alliances, or reaies were designed o esablish loyaly, andheir making was usually marked wih some ac, such as eaing a meal

ogeher or he giving o a gif. The covenan God made wih God’s

people was a promise o God’s aihulness. God is he iniiaor o he

covenan and requires in reurn he exclusive loyaly o God’s people.

A covenan wih God differs rom a covenan beween individuals in

ha God will always keep he covenan and remain aihul, regardless

    o he aihlessness o God’s people. Ulimaely, i is God’s mercy

and aihulness ha are responsible or he coninuaion o God’s

David wroe hese words, we can imagine Noah having similar houghs afer spending

a year on an ark wih seven members o his amily and many animals. And God did

The Rainbow PromiseBible Verse “This is he symbol o he covenan ha I have se up beween me and all

    creaures on earh.” (Genesis 9:17)

    Did You Know?

Afer he flood, God made a promise o Noah and o every living creaure ha herewould never again be a flood o desroy he earh. In he evens leading up oGod insrucing Noah o build he ark, God grieved over he wickedness o humankind

and decided o desroy his par o God’s creaion. Humankind did no change during

he flood experience. Humans were sill imperec creaures. God’s choice o make a

covenan indicaed God’s commimen o he uure o a less han perec world. Even

hough human beings have auls, God coninues o place confidence in hem.

God’s covenan wih Noah, and wih us, is no dependen on he behavior o

humans. Yes, here are expecaions and requiremens o us in reurn or being God’s

people. We have a responsibiliy o be aihul o God and o live as God wans us o.

When we ail o keep our par o he covenan, God is disappoined. However, God is

he iniiaor o he covenan, and is coninuaion depends ulimaely on he mercy

and aihulness o God. When we ail o keep our end o he covenan, which, being

human, we will, God coninues o reach ou o us. God’s covenan never ends.

God used he rainbow o mark he covenan esablished wih Noah and all livingcreaures. God did no creae he rainbow or his purpose bu gave i a

new significance or he uure. The rainbow serves as a reminder o

God o God’s commimen o humankind. The rainbow also reminds

    God’s people o God’s consan and never-ending aihulness.

God’s covenan wih Noah is one o many covenans menioned in

he Old Tesamen. God also made covenans wih Abraham, Moses,

and David. These covenans were made many years ago, ye hey

remain perinen o our lives oday. The rainbow reminds us ha God

has promised o be our God. We are God’s people. Thanks be o God!

Exploration Points• God reminds us ha God loves us.

LoveBible VerseThe frui of he Spiri is love, joy, peace, paience, kindness, goodness,

faihfulness, genleness, and self-conrol. (Galaians 5:22-23)

    Did You Know?

Today we begin a sudy of he frui of he Spiri as described by he aposle Paul inhis leter o he church in Galaia. “The frui of he Spiri is love, joy, peace, paience, kindness, goodness, faihfulness, genleness, and self-conrol” (Galaians 5:22-23). Jus

as apples are he proof of a healhy apple ree, frui of he Spiri is proof ha we follow

Jesus. These characerisics, Paul says, are signs of he Spiri’s presence wihin us.

Each week we will look a one frui of he Spiri lised by Paul. We begin by looking

a love. Firs Corinhians 13 is someimes referred o as he Love Chaper. This

chaper is par of a leter Paul wroe o he Chrisians in Corinh when he received

word ha hey were sruggling and arguing among hemselves. In he mids of and

inegral o his advice are Paul’s houghs on love. Love, Paul says, should be a he

cener of he communiy’s houghs and acions. Love is an essenial elemen of a

    Chrisian’s life.

Paul’s descripion of love applies o any circumsance in which love is found. The

love Paul describes begins wih God. God’s love claims us and, hrough us, reaches ou

o ohers. We, who have been loved by God, honor ha love by sharing i.

Several Greek words are usually ranslaed ino English as love.

Two of hem—storge, used for he love beween family members,

and eros, referring o sexual desire—are no used a all in he New

Tesamen. Phileo, meaning friendly love or family affecion, is used

a few imes. However, he Greek word used mos frequenly, and

he one Paul used in his leter, is agape, he erm ha refers o God’s

love. Agape is self-giving love. Agape is he love ha is paien and

kind, which does no boas and is no envious. This is God’s love and

he kind of love ha God’s children are called o show o each oher

    when we are Spiri-filled.

Exploration Points• We can show God’s love because God loves us.

    • Our love shows ohers ha we are children of God.
