I would like to welcome you all to BEAMA’sLow Carbon Living – A Smart Revolution for Allconference where we have an opportunity to understandthe future low carbon economy and the products andservices that will help deliver this vision.

The first day of the conference, sponsored by Siemens, looks at the exciting world ofelectric vehicles. Will 2011 be the year of the electric car? We discuss the challenges andopportunities and launch the BEAMA Electric Vehicle Infrastructure project which will driveforward how our members can provide the relevant infrastructure as the use of electricvehicles grows.

At the Conference Dinner, sponsored by Eaton, the CBI will give the overall business perspective on sustainability issuesand how they impact on the production, sale and use of energy.

Day 2, sponsored by Schneider Electric, starts with a look at the Energy Related Product Directive and what can be learntfrom the lighting industry who have already faced technology phase outs. We then move onto consider how existingbuildings can become low carbon. What impact will building regulations and the new Energy Performance of BuildingsDirective (EPBD) have on BEAMA members’ products and what will the technology mix be in an electric future? Theconference ends with a look at smart grids: what they are; the challenges and opportunities of the smart meter rollout;home area networks linked to smart meters and finally; the changing role of energy suppliers.

Can I also thank our other supporters: The Electrical Times; the Electrical Contractors Association; the Institute ofEngineering and Technology; and Ecotricity and CABLED for showing us their electric cars.

Time has been allocated for question and answers to make the sessions as interactive and practical as possible;I hope that you will have an interesting & enjoyable conference.

Howard PorterCEO, BEAMA

Some of the biggest challenges faced by businesses today are the escalating costs of energy, the scarcity of resourcesand the pressing need to meet Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) targets. An increasing focus on energy efficiencyand low carbon living is not an option, it is a necessity, particularly in our ever expanding cities. The Siemens’Environmental Portfolio, the largest in the world, has been designed to help organisations address these issues, whilstsupporting initiatives to help secure a sustainable future, such as BEAMA’s Low Carbon Living conference, is at theheart of what we do.

2.30-2.45 Technical challenges – batteries There are still significant hurdles to clear before a pure electric car is ready for mass production, with suppliers developing different battery solutions. While this technological competition breeds innovation there is a lack of standardisation in terms of charging technologies and protocols. This session outlines the latest issues.

Speaker AXEON POWER – George Paterson, Director of Sales

2.45-3.00 Technical challenges – grid infrastructure The transport sector has a strategic role in helping to meet the UK carbon reduction targets. Proposals to move away from petrol and diesel to electricity for transport will require: substantial new infrastructure of charging points connected to the electricity distribution networks and associated communication systems; and charging up vehicles outside peak demand periods.

Speaker CENTRAL NETWORKS – Roger Hey, Energy Projects Manager

3.00-3.15 Connection standards Standards are being developed at an EU level to ensure interoperable chargers allow consumers to easily charge their vehicles across Europe, and to use the same charger for different brands of electric vehicles.A standard will ensure the interoperability and connectivity between the electricity supply point and the charger of electric vehicles, and guarantee the safety of the electric vehicle batteries and their electromagnetic compatibility. Hear about the latest developments.
