Le passé composé (the perfect tense)

This week’s work is based on grammar – the perfect tense. This is the tense that you use to

say you have done something – it is a finished action, e.g. “I played football”, “he listened

to music”, “she went to town”. In French, there is a process to follow to create it. This

process can be found in your revision guide, at the back in the grammar section. I have

included a copy of the page at the end of the work. As always, if you have any problems at

all and you think you have done everything you can, please e mail your teacher on one of

the addresses below.

Mr Rogers – [email protected]

Mrs Windows-Yule – [email protected]

In order to form the ‘perfect tense’ you firstly need:

1) The present tense of the verb avoir (to have):

j’ ________ = _____ have

_______ as = you _______

il/ ________ /on ___________ = _____ /she/one _________

nous ___________ = ______ have

___________ avez = you (pl/polite) _____

ils/elles _________ = _________________ have

2) Secondly you need a ‘past participle’:

Regular past participles are formed by removing the last two letters of the infinitive and adding

the following endings:

-er verbs: remove the –er ►add é

-ir verbs: remove the –ir ►add i

-re verbs: remove the –re ►add u

Answers for Week 4 work – W/C 27th April 2020.

This week’s work is grammar based and will require you to make notes, carry out activities and watch

short videos. Grammar is an extremely important part of language learning as it forms the building

blocks for the vocabulary you put around it. Without verbs, tenses, pronouns and adjectives, you cannot

write full sentences. Work your way through the work carefully and ensure you complete all activities as

fully as possible. At the end of the work, you will find the answers to last week’s work.

Activities based on the above link

Page 1

1. Explain what a noun/ article is – give an example in French. A noun is a person, thing or a

concept. An article is “the”, “a”, “an” or “some”.

2. When do we use l’ to mean “the”? In front of a noun which starts with a vowel or the letter “h”.

3. How do you know the gender of family members in French? All female family members are

feminine and all male members are masculine.

4. Are there any particular rules in French when writing the masculine/ feminine form of job titles?

Depending on whether the person doing the job is male or female, the spelling has to change.

Page 2

1. Make a note of the rules that you can use to help you work out the gender of a particular word.

The main thing to remember here is that there are certain endings which will give you a clue as to

whether a particular word is masculine or feminine.

2. Answer the 6 questions which ask you to work out the gender of a word (the answers are just

underneath so that you can check each one). 1. Feminine. 2. Masculine. 3. Feminine. 4.

Masculine. 5. Feminine. 6. Masculine.

Page 3

1. Make notes on how to make nouns (objects, names etc) plural (more than one) depending on

their ending, e.g. un père = deux pères, une soeur = deux soeurs.

2. At the bottom of the page, look at the picture and fill in the gaps with the correct plural nouns

(the answer is just below the question so that you can check it once you have completed it). Hier,

je suis allé au supermarché, où j’ai acheté huit tomates, cinq oignons, six bananes, deux gateaux,

quatre pommes et trios journaux.

Page 4

1. Write a definition of the “definite article” and explain what it is in your own words. The definite

article basically means “the”. In French there are four words that are used for the definite article

– le, la, l’ and les.

3. What do you have to be careful of when using either “beaucoup de, trop de or plus de”? You do

not need the word for “a” or “the” after beaucoup de, trop de or plus de.

1. Complete the 3 questions on page 5 – the answers are there for you to compare your completed

work with.
