1. COLLEGE AT A GLANCE1.1 INTRODUCTIONLBS College of Engineering, Kasaragod is one of the most prestigious Selffinancing Engineering College in Kerala. It is one of the two self financingEngineering Colleges under LBS Centre for Science and Technology,Thiruvananthapuram. The college started in 1993 under the auspices of L BS Centre for Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram with B.TechPrograms in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering,Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science andEngineering. The college registered a steady growth and now offers B.TechPrograms in 6 branches of engineering in addition to 3 M. Tech programsand MCA. M.Tech Program in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal and fluidengineering) started in 2012 and M.Tech programs in Electronics andCommunication Engineering (VLSI design and Signal Processing) andComputer Science and Engineering (Computer Science and InformationSecurity) started in current academic year. B.Tech programs in MechanicalEngineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical andElectronics Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering wereaccredited by National Board of Accreditation, AICTE, New Delhi.The college campus at Povval is about 10 kms from the Kasaragod town,the headquarters of the northernmost district of Kerala. The campus spreadsover an area of 52 acres of land and is about 12 km away from the KasaragodRailway Station and K.S.R.T.C Bus Station. The nearest Airport is MangaloreAirport, which is about 75 km away from the College.The college in the beginning was affiliated to the University of Calicut. Later,when Kannur University was established in the year 1996 the college gotaffiliated to the university.

L B S CENTRE FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY,THIRUVANANTHAPURAMThe LBS Centre for Science and Technology (LBSCS &T),Thiruvananthapuram, the premier institute of computer training andconsultancy, registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific andCharitable Societies Registration Act XII of 1955 was established byGovernment of Kerala in 1976. The Centre was started by the Governmentof Kerala as an Autonomous body with the main objectives that the Centrewould act as a link between the industries and technical institutions so asto benefit society through their mutual interactions. The Centre is administered

by a Governing Body and an Executive Committee. The Chief Minister,Government of Kerala is the Chairman of the Governing Body and the Ministerfor Education is the Vice-Chairman. The Principal Secretary for HigherEducation is the Chairman of the Executive Committee and the Director ofTechnical Education is its Vice-Chairman. The Director of the Centre is theMember Secretary of both the bodies. He is the Executive head of the Centre.There are Joint Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, AdministrativeOfficer, Finance Officer and other subordinate staff to help the Director inadministration and financial matters.

2.1 MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGDepartment of Mechanical Engineering offers 4 year B.Tech degree Program inMechanical engineering and M.Tech Program in Thermal and fluid engineering.B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering) was one among the 4 courses started when thecollege was established in 1993. P.G Course started in the year 2012. The Departmenthas recorded a consistent academic excellence over the years. The department isset up with all required infrastructure and human resources. The laboratories arewell equipped to help students to carry out project works on the latest developmentsin the field. The department has independent reference library having more than 500volumes.

The IT Department started in the year 2000 with a sanctioned strengthof 60 students. The Department aims at offering a conducive environmentfor academic excellence and stimulates students to excel in all areas oftechnology. The Department has an excellent team of committed andexperienced faculty working towards the betterment of the studentsociety. The IT dept provides the most modern infrastructural facilitiesand modern labs with 200 terminals on a LAN with 2Mbps Internetconnectivity. 4. COLLEGE COUNCIL

The college council consists of the Principal, the Heads of departments,administrative officer, warden, staff adviser, Librarian, and Joint Secretaryof PTA. The general administration of the college is by the Principal,subject to the control of the Director of Technical Education. The councilis empowered to consider and report on any question concerningaccommodation, courses of instruction, or rules of discipline referred toit by the Principal, but it shall not interfere in any manner with the generaladministration of the college which is invested in the principal. All casesof misconduct on the part of students, scholarships etc. will be dealt withby the principal in consultation with the college council.

5. AMENITIES5.1 CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETYCo-operative Society “LBS College of Engineering Co-Operative SocietyLtd. S-219” was established in 1995 and is functioning in theadministrative block. Co-operative Society caters to the needs of thestudents and staff of this College. The society supplies text books, notebooks, drawing instruments, surveying instruments, uniform materials,Syllabus, Lab Records, Various forms, Registers and other stationaryarticles needed for the students and staff with discount rates. Besidesthis, the college canteen is also being run by the Co-operative Society.

5.2 HOSTELThe college provides hostel facilities for boys and girls with capacity 562and 349 respectively. There are six hostels managed by LBSCE, out ofwhich one boys hostel and one girls hostel are within the campus and theremaining are off campus hostels. Separate hostels are available forfirst year students. All the hostels are provided with mess facilities. Messdividing system is followed in all the hostels. The elected mess committeein each hostel manages the functioning of mess. The hostel inmates areexpected to follow the hostel rules strictly and as directed by wardenand resident tutors. The Hostels are headed by the Warden assisted bythe Resident Tutors. Mr. Vinod George, Associate Professor, CSED isthe warden.

5.2.1 HOSTEL RULES AND GUIDE LINES1. Allotment to various hostels shall be only for the students/staff

members of the institute.2. Priority for admission will be given to students based on the

distance from their home town.3. No students with unsatisfactory background such as involvement

in criminal cases will be given admission to hostels.4. Room allotment shall be carried out by the Resident Tutor/warden.5. Allotment given to the inmates is for a minimum period of one

year.6. Inmates vacating the hostel before completion of one year will

have to pay the establishment charge for twelve months. However,inmates vacating the hostel on course completion are exemptedfrom this.

7. Inmates will not be permitted to change their allotted rooms withoutpermission of the authorities.

8. Inmates are responsible for all the hostel properties.9. Causing damage to hostel properties will be seriously dealt with

and punitive actions will be taken against.10. An undertaking will have to be made by each inmate at the time

of admission regarding the protection of hostel properties andmaintenance of hostel discipline.

11. Ragging is strictly banned and any such cases if noted will bedirectly reported to the police authorities immediately.

12. Inmates are not supposed to use electric cookers, high volumespeakers etc. in the hostel.

13. In case of hostel shifting, the inmate will have to clear all theprevious dues before entry into a new hostel.

14. Inmate with any type of contagious disease will not be permittedto stay in the hostel.

15. No outside person/previous students of the institute will bepermitted to enter into the hostel without the permission of hostelauthorities.

16. Inmates shall be responsible for their own belongings and doors/cupboards should be properly locked before leaving rooms.

17. All the lights and fan will have to be switched off before leavingthe room.

18. Spoiling hostel walls by writing/sketching is not permitted.19. Usage of alcohol/narcotics etc. is strictly prohibited.20. Inmates are not supposed to organize any meetings/function

without prior permission of the authorities.21. Shifting furniture from one room to another is not permitted.22. No furniture/fittings /movable property shall be taken into or taken

out without the permission of authorities.23. Hoisting flags or fixing posters/other decorative items of political

parties in the hostel is not permitted.24. Storage of weapons/steel rods/metal pieces etc. in the hostel is

not permitted.25. Hostel inspection team is authorized to inspect any room/area of

the hostel at any time.

26. Inmates are not supposed to take the common news paper,magazines etc. to their rooms without the permission of authorities.

27. Only half of the rent will be charged for the inmate for the stay offirst half/second half of the month in the hostel.

Mess, Hygiene and discipline1. A mess committee will be elected for each month by the authorities

for the smooth conduct of hostel mess.2. The mess committee shall be responsible for the hostel hygiene,

minimization of food wastage, quality of food etc.3. The menu of food items for the month shall be published by the

mess committee in advance.4. Application for availing mess cut should be submitted to the mess

committee at least one day before.5. A mess secretary will be elected from the members of the mess

committee for initiating major activities of the committee.6. Hostel mess is meant for the inmates of the hostel. However

guests can take food on a payment basis.7. Maximum number of mess cuts an inmate can claim per month is

15 days. However the authorities can treat it as special in case ofgenuine situations like Ramzan season, carrying out project worketc.

8. A minimum of continuous 5 days of mess cut should be there foravailing mess cut.

9. Extra food items can be availed by the inmate on an extra paymentbasis.

10. Mess bill for each month can be paid without fine till the end ofthe next month.

11. A fine of Rs.100/-will be charged for the payment after the lastdate and thereafter, Rs.10/-per day will be charged as fine.

12. Visitors will have to enter the details in the visitors register.13. Inmates moving out of the hostel after 10.30 p.m.in any situation

will have to enter details in the movement register.14. Inmates will have to produce their ID card at any time if asked by

the authorities/security guard.

4. For classification of successful candidates only the marks securedin the subject in which they have passed or improved their markswill be considered even though in an earlier attempt they had failedor secured lower marks in the same subject.

5. Successful candidates who complete all the examinations in 4academic years (8 consecutive semesters) shall be ranked branchwise on the basis of aggregate marks obtained in the universityexaminations alone of all the semesters.

6. For the purpose of rank, the lateral entry students to B. Tech(Engg) programme shall not be considered as the rank is based onthe total marks in I&II to VIII semesters.

7. Classification for the lateral entry students shall be given basedon the percentage of marks obtained in III to VIII semesters.

8. The final mark list of the lateral entry scheme should indicate thata) the student was admitted through lateral entry scheme and b)classification is based on percentage of marks in III to VIIIsemesters.

9. A candidate will be qualified for degree only if he/she completesthe course and passes all the semester examinations within sevenacademic years (six academic years in the case of LES) sincehis/her admission to the course.

10. The final mark list should indicate the college in which the candidatehas studied.

14.12. Industrial interaction

All students shall undergo an industrial interaction programme either byattending training programme for a minimum of five days in a registeredindustry/Govt. establishment/Research institute or by visiting at least 5reputed industries / engineering establishments. They have to submit areport of the industrial interaction programme in the 8th semester. Amaximum of 25 marks is included for the industrial interaction programmein the marks for the project work in the 8th semester. The projectevaluation committee will evaluate and award the marks for the industrialinteraction programme. The industrial interaction programme shall becompleted during vacations /holidays taking not more than 3 workingdays combined with holidays.

2. A candidate who has failed in only one subject (theory and practicalput together) in a semester examination in his/her first attempt shallbe permitted to reappear for only two subjects of the semesterconcerned for improvement of marks without cancelling the earlierexamination.

3. A candidate, who has failed in two subjects (theory and practicalput together) in a semester examination in his or her first attempt,shall be permitted to reappear for only one subject of the semesterconcerned for improvement of marks without cancelling the earlierexamination.

4. A candidate, who has failed in three or more subjects in a semesterexamination in his/her first attempt, shall not be permitted toreappear for improvement of marks in any of the subjects.

5. The reappearance for improvement for eligible subjects should bemade only in the immediate chance following the semester in whichhe/she has undergone the course.

14.11. Classification of Successful candidates1. A candidate who qualifies for the Degree passing all the subjects

of the eight semesters within five academic years(4 in case ofLES) after commencement of his course of study and has securednot less than 75% of the aggregate of the total marks in all the 8semesters assigned to the university examination and sessionalevaluation together and not less than 70% separately for theuniversity examinations shall be declared to have passed theB.Tech (Engineering) Degree Examination in First Class withhonours.

2. A candidate who qualifies for the Degree passing all the subjectsof the eight semesters within five academic years aftercommencement of his course of study and has secured not lessthan 60% of the aggregate of the total marks in all the 8 semestersassigned to the university examination and sessional evaluationtogether and not less than 55% separately for the universityexaminations shall be declared to have passed the B.Tech(Engineering) Degree Examination in First Class.

3. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have passedthe examination for the degree in second class.

15. Creating a noisy environment in the hostel, causing disturbancesin any form to other inmates of the hostel etc. are not permitted.

16. Men’s hostel (MH1, MH2, MH3) entrance will be closed at09.00.p.m.

17. Men’s hostel (MH4 -First year) entrance will be closed at08.00.p.m.

18. Ladies hostel entrance will be closed at 6.00 p.m.19. Violation of hostel rules will invite punitive actions.20. Amendments of hostel rules will be made at proper time by the

hostel authorities.

5.3 COLLEGE BUSThe College operates college buses for the convenient transport of staffand students. At present the college own four buses and the service isavailable from Kanhangad, Kasaragod railway station and the hostelsoutside the college campus.

5.4 CANTEENA fully equipped canteen is functioning within the campus for convenienceof the staff and students.

5.5 BANKA fully computerized branch of Central Bank of India is functioning inthe campus. The working time of the branch is between 10.00 AM to4.30 PM. The bank also provides ATM facility within the campus.6. ANCILLARIES

6.1 PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATIONThe Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is actively involved in helpingsmooth functioning of the college. The objectives of the association are:1. c) Viva-voce examinations in the 8th semester will be conductedby a team of one internal examiner and one external examiner,duly appointed by the university. The students shall produce thecertified reports of seminar, project and industrial interaction atthe time of viva-voce examination. 70% marks shall be allottedfor subject knowledge and 30% for seminar, project and industrialinteraction.

14.9. Minimum for a pass

1. Candidates who secure not less than 50 % marks in a subject atthe university examination shall be declared to have passed in theexamination in that subject, irrespective of the sessional marksawarded for that subject. A candidate who secures not less than40% marks in the subject at the university examination and not lessthan 50% of the total marks assigned to the subjects, which includethe marks assigned to the university examination and sessionalassessment , shall also be declared to have passed the examinationin that subject.

2. The pass mark for Project, Seminar, Viva Voce and subjects havingonly either sessional evaluation or university examination alone shallbe 40% of the total marks assigned to that subject. Candidatesfailing in the above subjects have to complete/repeat therequirements again so as to secure a pass minimum of 40%. Thereis no minimum mark for pass or fail for the Physical education,Health and Fitness program.

14.10. Improvement of marks

1. A candidate who has made his/her first successful attempt in anysemester examination and secured a complete pass in the semesterexamination in the first attempt shall be permitted to reappear forimprovement of marks in a maximum of three subjects ( theoryand practical put together) without cancelling the earlier examination.

Every candidate shall register for the examination. A candidatewho does not register for the examination shall not be permitted toattend next semester

II) Eligibility for appearing examination is subject to thefollowing

a) He/she must secure not less than 75% attendance (including dutyleave) in the number of working hours during the first year and ineach semester thereafter and shall be physically present for aminimum of 65% (excluding duty leave) of the total working hours.

b) Maximum permissible duty leave shall be 10% of the total workinghours.

c) He/she must earn a progress certificate from the Principal of havingsatisfactorily completed the course of study prescribed in thesemester as required by these regulations.

III) It shall be open to the Vice Chancellor to grant condonationofshortage of attendance on the recommendation of Principalinaccordance with the following norms.

a) The shortage shall not be more than 10%.

b) Shortage of attendance up to 20% shall be condoned only onceduring the entire course provided such shortage is caused bycontinuous absence on genuine medical grounds.

c) Shortage of attendance shall not be condoned more than three timesduring the entire course.

IV) A candidate who is not eligible for condonation of attendance shallrepeat the course, when it is offered again.

V) The university will conduct examinations for all subjects (Theory,Drawing & practical)

a) The scheme of valuation will be decided by the chief examinerfor theory/ drawing subjects.

b) For practical examinations the internal and external examinerstogether will decide the division of marks to be awarded. Thestudent shall produce the certified record of the work done in thelaboratory for the examination. The evaluation of the candidateshould be done as per the guidelines given below.

6.5 NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEMEThe National Service Scheme (NSS) was evolved and introduced bythe Government of India in the year 1969. It aims at developing amongststudents a sense of participation in nation building through Social Work.This deepens understanding of the social environment and enriches his/her personality through actual participation in day-to-day life of the society.This process of learning is not only a desirable supplement to theclassroom education but develops in the student a sense of responsibility,tolerance and cooperation. The college has implemented the NSS andthe unit is functioning with full vigor and enthusiasm. NSS providesopportunities to teachers and students to gain valuable practicalexperiences of community service.

6.6 ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONAlumni Association has a significant role in keeping the old students intouch with the campus. Several chapters of this association are activein various metros of India and foreign countries and they share the latesttechnical knowhow with those in the campus. Several alumni frequentlyvisit the campus and interact with the students. Notable contribution ofthis association is evident in the form of a number of on and off campusrecruitments that takes place.

6.7 ISTEThe Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) is a national,professional, nonprofit making society and the main objective of whichis to assist and contribute in the production and development of top qualityengineers and technicians needed by the industries and otherorganizations. The college chapter of ISTE organizes different trainingprograms, seminars, talks, etc on the fields of engineering, technologyand management which would enhance the professional knowledge ofthe students.

6.8 NATURE CLUBA nature club is functioning in the campus. This club, in which both staffmembers and students are active members, is diligently pursuing its dreamof a green, beautiful and environment friendly campus.

6.9 ROAD SAFETY CLUBIn order to create awareness on road traffic aspects and to educateroad users about traffic rules, traffic regulations and other related mattersa road safety club is formulated and working actively within the campus.By conducting classes and photo exhibitions by experts from the motorvehicles department, the club develops skill among the students for takingappropriate action in various traffic situations. The club also works asvolunteer forum for aiding trauma care activities and assist in enforcementof traffic rules. Mr. Kishor Kumar V V, Asst. 6.10 DELITE-Debate & Literary ClubThe DEbate & LITErary club (DELITE) had started in the college inDecember, 2006, with an aim to nurture the literary activities in the college.At present Mr. Dileep V.K, Asst. Professor in Computer Science &Engineering is the Staff Co-Ordinator of the club.

The students will be continuouslyassessed on their performance for 50 hours of practical sessions duringthe period 1st semester to 7th semester and a maximum of 50 marks willbe awarded in the 7th semester. There is no minimum mark for pass orfail for this program.

14.7. Sessional work

Sessional marks for Theory, Drawing, Workshops, Laboratories andPractical will be awarded by the teaching faculty based on the day today performance of the students. The allocation of sessional marks forthe individual subjects shall be on the following basis.

Every teacher is required to maintain an ‘attendance and assessmentrecord’ which consists of attendance marked in each lecture or practicalor project work class, the assignment marks, the test paper marks andthe record of topics covered, separately for each course. This should besubmitted to the head of the department for periodic checking. The headof the department will put his signature and date after due verification.At the end of the semester, the head of institution will keep this documentin safe custody. The university or any inspection team appointed by theuniversity may inspect the records of both current and previoussemesters. The sessional marks shall be published in the departmentwithin 20 days after the termination of the classes, so as to incorporatecorrections, if any, before sending to the university.

14.8. ExaminationI) There shall be University Examinations at the end of the first

academic year and at the end of every semester from third semesteronwards in subjects as prescribed in the scheme of examination.

14.2. Duration of the coursea) The course for the B.Tech. Degree shall extend over a period of

four academic years comprising of 8 semesters. The first andsecond semester combined and each semester from third semesteronwards shall cover the groups of subjects as given in the schemeof studies and examinations.

b) Each semester shall normally comprise of 16 weeks.

14.3. Eligibility for the DegreeCandidates for admission to the Degree of B.Tech. shall be required tohave undergone the prescribed course of study in an institution maintainedor affiliated to Kannur University for a period of not less than fouracademic years and to have passed all examinations specified in thescheme. The first academic year of study shall be from the date ofcommencement of admission till the closure of the academic year. Allexaminations should be passed within seven years (6 years in case ofLES) since his/her admission to B.Tech programme.

14.4. Branches of studyAt the time of admission a student will be offered any one of the followingbranches of study and such branches of study as may be instituted fromtime to time.

Duty leave can be recommended onlyby the faculty members who are authorized to do so. Duty leave shouldbe submitted to the designated authority (Class Tutor/ HOD), preferablybefore the duty is performed or soon after returning from the duty, butnot later than three working days. After the duty leave has beensanctioned, the students must meet the respective staff members fromwhose classes they were absent and request them to mark the dutyleave granted in their attendance register. The maximum limit of dutyleave, which can be granted to a student during a semester, is 10% ofthe number of working days in that semester. However, in exceptionalcases prior permission of the Principal should be obtained to get dutyleave in excess of 10%. Students who do not satisfy the attendancerequirements as per the university regulations will not be permitted forthe university examinations.

13. DISCIPLINE, CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOUR

1. All students should follow the uniform dress code of the collegeinside the campus. Dress properly and neatly, befitting to aprofessional college.

2. Behavior of the students, both within and outside the collegepremises should be decent and befitting to a professional institution

3. The student should move silently when proceeding from one classto another without disturbing classes at work.

4. No student shall leave the class before the class is dispersed orwithout the permission of the teacher-in-charge of the class.

5. Students are prohibited from organizing or attending meetings onthe college campus, distributing notices and collecting money forany purpose without the prior permission of the Principal.

12. ATTENDANCE AND LEAVE REGULATIONSStudents are expected to attend all classes without fail. If for unavoidablereasons, leave for absence is required, permission from the competentauthority should be taken as given below.

12.1. ORDINARY LEAVELeave Application for ordinary leave should be submitted to the ClassAdvisor concerned, who is competent to sanction leave to a maximumof 3 days at a time. For periods beyond three days at a time, the Headsof Departments will be the sanctioning authority. Applications for ordinaryleave should be submitted within three days from the date of return fromleave.

12.2. MEDICAL LEAVEStudents can apply to the Head of the Department, through the ClassTutor, for leave on medical grounds with relevant certificates within threeworking days after returning to the college, if the absence is not exceedingone week. If it exceeds one week, student/parent must inform theconcerned Class Tutor/ Head of the Department regarding the leaveand shall submit the relevant documents on return to the college. The

submit self-attested copies of all mark lists up to 6th semester alongwith the application.

7. Admission shall normally be restricted to those with valid GATEscore. However, this stipulation is relaxed in the case of sponsoredcandidates.

8. In case seat remains vacant due to lack of candidates with validGATE score, candidates form Kerala State without valid GATEscore will be considered against such vacancies. Even if seats arestill remaining vacant, candidate from other states will be consideredfor admission.

10.3 M.C.A. COURSECandidate for admission to the MCA course shall be required tohave one of the following qualifications.

a) BCA, B Sc in Computer Science / IT / Electronics.b) B Tech with 50% aggregate in all semesters put together.c) B. Sc / B Com or Equivalent with Mathematics or Statistics (This

10. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

10.1 B.TECH DEGREE COURSECandidates included in the entrance rank list published by CEE, Keralaand admission to the Engineering course should otherwise satisfy therules regarding the minimum academic requirements in the qualifyingexamination enumerated as follows:

a) Higher Secondary Examination/equivalent: Pass with 50%marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry& Mathematics put together.

b) 3-year Diploma engineering/equivalent: Pass with 50% marksin the final Diploma examination.

c)Relaxation in Marks: Candidates belonging to Socially &Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) with a total annualfamily income up to Rs.2.5 lakhs will get a relaxation of 5%marks i.e. 45% marks in mathematics and 45% marks inPhysics, Chemistry & Mathematics put together in the qualifyingexamination.
