My tutor, Deborah Marks, instructed each lesson of how to become more accurate in measuring, estimating and learning new ways of reading and drawing the face. Each day, we would start our lessons with some meditation and stretching because we would be sitting down for 20 minutes at a time to draw in a hot stuffy room concentrating on a model sitting at the front, lights beaming at them in the middle. The class would be sitting around him or her on donkeys (not the animal unfortunately) and/ or easels with only five minute breaks to have a drink and wander around the campus for fresh air. I was able to learn how to measure using those “fancy sticks” that you see artists use and create some fantastic new works that I am incredibly proud of and never thought I was able to do. The last day, Deborah allowed us to have a bit of fun with our work and told us we were doing blind contour drawing. We would turn off the lights and have small stage lighting beaming at the model, focusing on the different tones of light. We used different toned paper and cut them out to gradually build up the light on the areas of the face. After we finished our works, all the students set up their studio classrooms to pin up or display their practise works. The finished works were displayed in a small gallery and you had the opportunity to see other students’ work as well as your own in a little exhibition that parents and teachers could attend. Thanks to the Sir William Dobell Foundation I was able to be accommodated in the Song Hotel with two other girls who I made friends with right away. There were other regional students like me who stayed at the same hotel and I later got to know as we walk to and from the school every day. I am very thankful to the Sir William Dobell Foundation, the Dobell Drawing School, the National Art School and Miss Reidy for giving me the opportunity to gain more skills, friends and a lifelong experience I’ll never forget. Dobell Drawing School

During the school holidays, I attended the National Art School for four days with the Dobell Drawing School for intensive drawing in the course of my choice, portraiture. The class would be sitting around him or her on donkeys (not the animal unfortunately) and/or easels with only five minute breaks to have a drink and wander around the campus for fresh air.

The world now is global community and at The Henry Lawson High School, every day we strive and are proud to be a positive part of that community. With the support of our P&C, we have been looking for a worthy cause to donate our old style school uniform. Year 10 students George Mitton and Angus Kelly together with their Rugby team mates from the Temora Junior Rugby Union Club, are traveling to Fiji in July and will be packing brand new fleecy lined jumpers to distribute as needed to the youth in Fiji. Being able to donate our old style uniform to an area of need is very fulfilling and we would like to thank the Temora Junior Rugby Union Club for their cooperation and we wish them good luck with their upcoming Rugby tour.

Who ever said swimming was a summer sport? Tom Robinson has just returned from NSW All Schools Swimming Championships. This event brings together all the championship winners and place getters from Combined High Schools, Independent Colleges and Catholic Colleges swimming championships to choose the NSW All Schools Swimming team to compete at the Australian All Schools Championships later this year. Tom placed fourth in the 17-19 years male 50m freestyle event which is a terrific achievement, especially given the short swimming season we have. Well done Tom.

Thank you to our Leos members for assisting at the Grenfell Rodeo last weekend. Andrew Knight, Marie Knight, Brett Knight, Brendan Knight, Amy Parsons and Isabel Heathcote together with Mrs Baker volunteered to run the car park. The students donned safety vests with parking attendant badges and directed vehicles to the car park area where they instructed the cars where to park. As a reward for their help the Grenfell Rodeo allowed them free entry into the rodeo and they also received a merit certificate and house points for their community service. Thanks to our Leos president Jesse Thomson-Jones for organising our helpers.Aaron FlaggPrincipal
