Music and the liberal arts are a powerful combination.

World-class musicians should also be world-class thinkers.

Classically trained musicians need to be cutting-edge musicians.

Passion and profession can coexist.

Musicians need to be smart, agile, innovative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial— inside and outside the world of music.

The 21st century needs 21st-century musicians.

Our students experience both a world-class conservatory of music and a leading college of liberal arts and sciences. Together, Lawrence University offers the ideal learning environment for today’s aspiring musicians.

for the 21st century

PERFORMANCE REIMAGINED

If we want audiences to re-engage with classical music— or any live music—we have to redefine the rules and be willing to step outside the confines of tradition. The Lawrence Conservatory’s innovative culture is to rethink every aspect of performance, from venue to presentation, to create the most compelling live performances that we can.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

We will challenge you to ask (and answer) questions like: What if bands, choirs, and orchestras were places not only for joyous high-level music making, but also for communities to develop leadership, collaboration, improvisation, and entrepreneurship? What can live music-making do for people in warming shelters, hospitals, or prisons?

MULTI-MUSICALITY

CREATIVE IMPULSE

ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET

Expand your musical vocabulary with a full array of Western classical music opportunities as well as world music ensembles: Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian Ewe drumming and dancing, Cuban drumming and singing, Brazilian Samba drumming, and Australian Aboriginal Didjeridu. When you dive into an ensemble tradition with no written music, you will find new opportunities to create in the spaces between musical traditions.

We integrate improvisation, composition, non- western classical music, and deep listening throughout our conservatory curriculum to help you become a creative, flexible, collaborative, and adaptable musician.

To own your musical life and stand out from the crowd you will need to be innovative, passionate, original, collaborative, and fearless—and we’ll help you hone this mindset through coursework that incorporates improvisational exercises and creative play, along with the creation of high-level business proposals.

LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION

To reach your full musical potential, you must also expand intellectually—and the liberal arts tradition at Lawrence nurtures the creative, multidisciplinary, and flexible mindset you’ll need to succeed here and in your life after Lawrence. Classes push our students to critically think and write about the subject at hand.

Building core musicianship is at the heart of every- thing we do. A musician today, as in Bach’s day, needs outstanding technique, flawless tone, beautiful musicality, as well as a deep knowledge of music theory and musicology. At Lawrence, private lessons, ensembles, music theory, musicology and keyboard skills are combined with rigorous training, intellectual discipline and creative artistry. These courses will push a music student to perform exceptionally, think analytically, read critically, speak convincingly, write clearly and create passionately.

Our studio teachers and music directors will guide you along your journey to becoming the best musician you can be—whether that’s alone during personal practice time or on the stage during a large ensemble concert or your own solo recital. Our musicologists, theory, and composition professors will provide you with a firm grounding in music theory, composition, and history. From the classroom to the rehearsal room, our faculty are dedicated to helping you reach your full potential as a musician, scholar, and human being. They will encourage, push and empower you to reach beyond what you might even expect of yourself.

Ensembles

NON-MUSIC MAJORS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF ALL THE ENSEMBLES AT LAWRENCE and can also benefit from the world-class training we offer. Almost every ensemble is open to any student by audi-tion, and a few ensembles don’t require any music training to join, like the Balinese Gamelan. Non-Con students can also audition for Ensemble Awards, which waive private lesson fees in exchange for ensemble participation.
