Evaluation – Question 3
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MAGAZINE AND WHY?
The Four Stages of Production
Production:
Using photoshop to create a magazine.
Marketing:
Pitching your magazine to publishers and finding out
the target audience.
Distribution:
Promoting your magazine online, on social
networking sites as well as in shops, like news
agents or places like HMV.
Consumption:
People looking at your magazines online site, buying
magazines and taking part in competitions from the
magazine.
My pitch was to IPC Media, they
publish magazines like
NME, NUTS etc. I picked this
company because of the fact
that it’s the same as NME, and it
would be enticing for customers
to see that I am amongst big
magazine names, which will
make the customer believe RVL
is a magazine of good quality.
I chose IPC because it’s a well known media publisher, and as I have mentioned it works with well known magazines including NME, so already IPC have a market for music magazines, and as NME is their only ‘rock/alternative’ music magazine, there is definitely a RVL shaped gap in their market.
CHOOSING IPC
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PUBLISHING TWO SIMILAR
MAGAZINES
Arguably, NME and RVL are pitching to the same sort of audience.
ADVANTAGES:
1. IPC only have one alternative music magazine, having two will
bring in more of an audience which is better for business.
2. RVL is more specific than NME. It’s almost like two magazines
into one, which will bring fans from both genres in and also new
ones of the combined genre.
3. There is no way IPC can possibly lose business from bringing on
board another alternative music magazine. Our fans to integrate
and buy both, which is great for everyone.
4. They could team up and become sister magazines, instead of
rivals.
DISADVANTAGES:
1. There may be a ‘rivalry’ between the two magazines because of
their similarity.
2. The genre clash might be an issue.
This is NME’s online magazine. It’s updated regularly and because their
target audience - like RVL’s – is aimed at the younger networking generation
it gets them more publicity. This is the same sort of thing I would do for RVL.
