1st Rule: First letter in a symbol ALWAYS begins with a capital letter. *Much like how you write your name!Ex. H Br Na Cl

Page 9: Latin Element Names and Symbols

2nd Rule: If the symbol is made up of 2 or more letters, the 2nd

and 3rd letters are ALWAYSwritten in lower case.

Ex: Ca Ne Br Uuq

15 things to know about the periodic table

1. Element Name: Found in the box, spelled out

2. Element Symbol: Found in the box

Page 12: Latin Element Names and Symbols

3. Atomic #: Found at the top of the box. Tells you the # of protons. Always the

smallest number in the box. Is always a whole number.

4. Atomic mass #: Found in the box. Always the largest number in the

box. Usually as a decimal.

Page 13: Latin Element Names and Symbols

5. # of protons: (+) You find this number based off of the atomic number.

6. # of electrons: ( - ) # of protons = # of electrons

7. # of neutrons: ( o ) Atomic Mass # - Atomic #

Page 14: Latin Element Names and Symbols

8. Group #: At the top of the box. These run vertical ( 1-18 )

9. Period #: At the Left hand side of the box. These run horizontal ( 1- 7 )

Page 15: Latin Element Names and Symbols

10.# of electrons in outer shell: Look at the group #.

11.# of shells: Look at the period #. (K,L,M,N….) K shell….holds up to 2 electrons L shell…. Holds up to 8 electrons M shell…..holds up to 8 electrons N shell…..holds up to 8 electrons etc….

12.State of the Element: Is it a solid, liquid, or or gas in its natural state. Written in black….solid Written in blue…...liquid Written in red……..gas

Page 17: Latin Element Names and Symbols

13.How many (+) charges: Number of protons tells you this.

14.How many (-) charges: Number of electrons tells you this.

15.Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid: Is it on the the left side of the periodic table ( metal ), is it on the right side of the periodic table ( non metal ), does it lie on the zig zag line ( metalloid)

Now you can draw a Bohr Model of the Element!!
