Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has unveiled plans to revitalize townships under the municipality by establishing and funding local enterprises.

Ramokgopa was speaking during the 2015 State of the City Address (SOCA) held recently at the Pretoria Freedom Park . The City of Tshwane will invest approximately R 100 million towards developing the necessary trading infrastructure for the informal sector.

Soshanguve, Hammanskraal, Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa are some of the township that are set to benefit from the city plan to revitalize the city’s vision to turn Tshwane into an economic hub.

Ramokgopa said that the

city will breathe life into the old forsaken industrial sites in Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal.

He said that the Babelegi Industrial site in Hammanskraal will see the establishment of a youth owned plastic manufacturing company, which will produce refuse bags for the city and residents.

He said this will create employment for the locals as the city will buy refuse bags from the project worth R 1.5 million to insure the project sustains itself and retains employees.

Soshanguve will be home to a youth owned bakery, while Ga-Rankuwa currently has a furniture manufacturing business which currently produces school desks for schools around the

country to the value of R20 million since its inception earlier last year.

Ramokgapa said the city will embark in a campaign that will help fight the use of drugs in the city.

“The city will allocate R 50 million in the next financial year which will be used to combat the selling and use of drugs by our youth especially nyaope. The majority of nyaope users are black, poor, young, residing in townships that have a huge a c a d e m i c potential but denied the right to higher

education by the drug. We will work closely with social workers who will help identify drug abuse hotspots and come up with programs which will include training, community awareness campaigns and partnerships ,” said Ramokgopa.

He said the City will also focus on the creation of business development strategies targeting informal traders, which will

contribute towards improving the competitiveness of the sector within the City.

“This will include, but will not be limited to, linking informal business with formal business, facilitating the provision of financial and non-financial interventions as well as identifying market opportunities” Ramokgopa said.

Townships in Tshwane North to receive a major boost

after the faction known as‘Diphepheng’(Scorpions) believed to be supporters of suspended Makou, tried to stop the project over allegations of nepotism in the recruitment of workers at the project.

The ‘Moerskont’faction believed to be supporters of Hammanskraal ANC zonal leadership, retaliated by assaulting members of Diphepheng at the project site, before proceeding to destroy Kutumela’s pub in Temba, Makou’s house in Stinkwater and Mojela’s house in Dilopye.

During the rampage nine cars belonging to members of

Diphepheng were also damaged when they were found parked at Kutumela’spub.

A member of the ANC Youth League in the area, who wished to remain anonymous in fear of reprisal, confirmed that he was a member of the Diphepheng faction and added that his organisation was not satisfied with flouting of procedures in the recruitment of workers at the project.

“We want to stop the project (water reservoir) because we are not happy with the recruitment of workers, who are only employed based on the faction they are moving along with. Some of the

workers were dismissed from work because they differ with the regional leadership politically,” he said.

“Members of “Operation Vat Alles” were used by the ‘Moerskont’ faction to assault us. They were even threatened with dismissal if they did not go after us,” he said.

The Hammanskraal ANC zonal secretary, Mr Paul Mashaba, distanced the party from the mayhem, saying those who tried to stop the project were not the members of the ANC.

“These are just Nyaope addicts who are criminal elements and not members of the ANC.

They got our t-shirts during our previous election campaigns. They have been demanding money from contractors, when the contractors refused to give it to them; they threaten to stop the project. We advised them to raise their grievances with the contractors instead of threatening to stop the project,” said Mashaba.

He alleged that ‘Diphepeng’ faction are supported financially by Makou, who has been suspended from the Tshwane ANC Regional Executive.

Sosh Times was able to trace one of the victims of the rampage, Mr Rica Mashiane, who said;

“My physical condition is still very bad. My leg has been broken. My two arms are also broken. I have several stitches on the head. I have been hit with pangas and golf sticks. At the hospital, I used a wheel chair to move around. When I was discharged I was given crutches to use, which I could not use because of my arm injuries. I now use a walking frame to move around,” said Mashiane.

Temba police spokesperson Lieutenant Sarah Lesabane could not confirm if the police have made any arrest or are investigating the matter.

COMMENTOpinion and Analysis

Premiya e latofatswa ka kabelano ya di thendara

Our lead story in this publication poses a cause for concern. The construction of additional reservoir tanks at Temba to support adequate provision of water to areas North of Tshwane, including the whole of Moretele Local Municipality as a way of improving service delivery, is indeed a worthwhile exercise. The Moretele areas are in dire need of water. They depend on water from boreholes, which sometimes run dry. The reservoir if it is completed timeously it will bring a remedy to the poverty that is tearing the rural communities apart. That is regrettable. The war between the two ANC faction, namely Diphepeng and Moerskont is disturbing service delivery. Yet when the community start protesting violently, they are blamed as being unpatriotic or used by the enemies of the state. Now the ANC members are the ones who are directly causing the disorder. It is a matter of certain individuals in the community who are concerned about feeding their stomachs more than serving the community. They want to control the tenders and projects from the City of Tshwane for their own benefits. Water is a source of life because without water all nature will parish. The problem is that the contractors and the workers, who are supposed to accelerate work to see progress taking place in the establishment of this multimillion water project, are retarding progress. Everyone wants a share or slice in the project. They are also slave masters who own some people. These people are the Vat Alles employees in the employment of the Tshwane Municipality, who are supposed to keep Tshwane clean but they are used for other selfish purposes. They are used as lend a crowd people during official gatherings, to boost up attendance levels. The most disturbing factor in this case is that they were used by the Moerskont faction to be involved in the war against the Diphepheng and failure to do so would expose them to a situation where they will be vulnerable to dismissal. You know when a slave has no alternative to his only source of income; he can do anything to please his master. Under the circumstances, there is very little one can do to unchain himself from hands of devil and the deep blue sea. According to the story it is the Diphepheng faction who initiated the conflict by stopping workers in the project due to grievances. On the other hand the Moerskont faction claims to have been acting in defence of the project allocated to the members. But that was done at a high cost. Two houses and a tavern were vandalised to a great extent. Nine cars were damaged in the process. It was a great havoc. It is understood that several people were severely hurt in the war of the tenderpreneurs. The only person critically hurt and who was available for comment was Mr. Rica Mashiane from Stinkwater. Both his hands were broken and a leg. His head has several stitches after he was injured by the Moerskont people with pangas and golf sticks.

Learners from Tiyelelani Secondary School and Boepathutse Junior

Secondary School took part in ‘Take a Girl Child to Work’ organised by Department of Correctional Services regional offices in Soshanguve recently.

The learners were given an opportunity to spend the day at the offices and experience the day-to-day operations.

The learners were divided into different groups and assigned to numerous sections of the offices and the officers took turns to explain their duties.

According to the event’s organiser, Mr. Jabu Sithole, the aim of the event was to expose the girls to different operations

within correctional services. “We wanted to expose them

to offender rehabilitation,” said Sithole.

As part of their day’s work, the girls were taught about the different conditions that could lead to an offender being released from prison.

Another officer, Ms. Onnica Masemola told the girls that another aim of the day was to show learners that committing crime was a bad idea.

“As a result we saw it fit that we invite you here today so you can know the effect crime has on the lives of youngsters. Crime is a serious problem in the country, so we really urge you not to get involved in criminal activities,” said Masemola.

Soshanguve correctional services takes girls to work

By Charmaine Kgopa

Grade 7,8 and 9 learners from various schools around Soshanguve and Hammanskraal were enthralled by the interaction they had with professionals from the science industry during an empowering career expo held at Filadelfia Secondary School recently.

The event was aimed at exposing learners to various career opportunities within

Maths and Science focal point. It attracted Scientists,

Engineers and Information Technology (IT) specialists to present an overview of their careers and advised on the subject choice they should take.

“We are here to influence the students’ subject choice, especially those who are in the grade 9,” said Mr. Gaopalelwe Santswere, a senior scientist from the South African Young Nuclear Professionals Society

(SAYNPS). He said that he was impressed

by the interest he had with the learners about the Science sector.

Amongst other guests were officials from the Department of Basic Education, Community Development and Empowerment Section as well as the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

Mr. Faith Mogase from

Edbook, an on-line application for education specialising in community projects said that he was honoured to be a part of what he described as a ‘great outreach programme’ within the community of Soshanguve.

“As an ambassador for Edbook, I am glad to be here today, covering this event for young people to have a better tomorrow,” he said.

According to the event organiser Mr. Pheeha Samuel

Marokhu from the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB), said that the only challenges they had was encouraging learners to attend the event.

“Due to the lack of funding, we could not attract as many students as we would have hoped to, but on the overall the attendance is satisfactory,” said Pheeha.

About two hundred residents of Midas, an informal settlement near

Morula Sun Casino, composed mostly of members of the Democratic Alliance(DA), signed a petition to the Tshwane Municipality to have the so-called ‘Killer dam’ in their area which claimed five lives were lost because of it, was to be enclosed.

Although the area is the stronghold of the ANC, under the Ward 22 councillor Refilwe Motsepe. The petition was handed over to PR Councillor Cheecky Ndlovu for the DA, as well as DA Member of Parliament (MP) Marius ‘Manqoba’ Redelinghuys to foward to the Tshwane Municipality.

This comes after several publications wrote about the drownings of five people at the dam which took place several years ago, with the last victim having died in 2007. The

newspapers claimed that the residents fear that another life is about to be lost.

Redelinghys said it is disturbing to witness such an environment, right inside a village, with a killer dam posing danger to lives of the residents.

“Five people have already died at the dam. Actually, the ANC councillor for Ward 22 should be fired for claiming that she did not know anything about the dam of death. As an opposition party we will use all the powers at our disposal to ensure the safety of people, by following up on this matter until the dangerous dam is enclosed,” he said.

On the contrary, a resident staying near the dam, Ms. Patricia Ndhlovu told a different story, saying; “My experience is that two children who were swimming at the dam drowned. Some other people go near the dam, especially at night, they then drowned. Some people get killed somewhere and are dumped there.”

“There are also muggers who take away other peoples possessions forcefully. If you are not so lucky, after robbing you, they throw you into the dam,” she added.

Mr Alfred Ncube, PR Councillor for the DA said he grew up near Midas and he remembers quite well that the place was always associated with mystery, to the extent that people who visited the place, even before the dam was formulated, died or disappeared.

“The basic cause of this problem is that no Environment Assesment Impact was ever done by the Tshwane Municipality because the community just took the law into their own hands and squatted illegally. It is important that the community do not select to stay anywhere. If we are not careful about that, we will always land into trouble. As the DA we will never condone squatters,” said Ncube.

At the time of going to press Ward 22 Councillor could not be found for comment.

The heart of small business will soon be beating with the establishment of Soshanguve Small Business Forum which aims to give a lifeline to existing and aspiring entrepreneurs, mainly in Mabopane and Soshanguve.

The forum aims to help grow local small businesses by identifying opportunities that are viable for small business owners to venture into. It will empower entrepreneurs through series of mentorship, training and lastly, funding to start or expand their businesses.

The forum will introduce entrepreneurs into buddying local markets such as the automotive, waste management and agricultural industry. Members of the Soshanguve Small Business Forum are owners of construction, motor, trading and production companies to name a few.

As part of their 2025 vision, the forum seeks to be a domicile where skills can be mobilised, and businesses can

be established. The forum was founded by Ms. Zine Nkukwana who will be steering the ship to success as they welcome small business owners to make the 2025 vision a reality.

She said that the forum will teach local entrepreneurs how to secure opportunities and assist them when it comes to Knocking on the right doors for financial assistance.

“We should stop liking to work as silos and tenderpreneurs. We need this forum to flourish not only for entrepreneurs but also for the community. As a forum for small local businesses, we will work together to help one another in growing our businesses,” said Nkukwana.

Mr. Themba Mabaso, the chairperson of the forum said that he was delighted by the numerous interest groups that were present, he insisted that more and more people especially the youth should join the forum as young entrepreneurs.

“We need this forum to be our strength and the community to be our pillar through this forum,” Mr Mabaso said.

WHAT TYPE OF EM-PLOYER ARE YOU?

PART 1

If one was to ask what is an Employer? The answer to this question

would be that an Employer is a person or institution that hires employees or workers. Employers offer wages or a salary to the workers in exchange for the worker’s work or labour. We can also say a person who is contractually bound to a worker whom he/she pays a salary or wages, in exchange for on-going work and for which the employer directs the work and exercises fundamental control over the work. The Employer Employee relationship must be based on a win win situation.

Another question to ask would be who is an employer? The correct answer to this question is any person, Institution, Organisation, Church or Business that is registered with SARS and has been issued a PAYE, UIF, SDL number is deemed an employer. If you have unregistered Employee and conduct business with

Business

them, you do not fall under the Employer category. I don’t know what you call yourself.

When two or more people come together or agree to work together, a mutual benefiting relationship is then established. Employer employee relationship should be solely based on Employer and Employee relationship. When an Employer hires a new Employee that is the beginning he/she is also starting a new relationship. Because employers and employees often work in close quarters, they necessarily develop relationships. Managing these relationships is vital to business success, as strong relationships can lead to greater employee happiness and even increased productivity. To reap these benefits, keep the dynamics of your employer-employee relationship in mind. The principles governing healthy relationship is the ability to communicate and give feedback, respect for one another, commitment to productivity and efficiency in all we do and say. A clear distinction must be drawn as to where the friendship stops. Both the Employer and

Employee must respect the contractual agreement entered into.

The work place today is faced with numerous challenges and insurmountable problems that cause some employees to grumble and heavily pull them up each morning they have to go to work. The reason for that being the horror they are just going to face for the entire nine hours at work. It then becomes important to mention but a few types of Employers and their behaviour mannerism. There are Employers called the Fraudsters Employers. These are Employers who are fraudsters in their own right. They are fraudulent in anything they do or say no matter who you are. They use avoidance techniques include paying workers’ “under-the-table” or declaring employees “independent contractors” to avoid taxes; avoiding workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance both required by law; operating without permits or licenses to name a few. They would at time steal the business money and hold their employees responsible to an extent were they make them

pay for what they have not done. Poor employees succumb to these atrocities for fear of losing their jobs. When their reported for these unpalatable wrong doings, they bribe officials of statutory bodies. This behaviour takes away the dignity of employees and denies them their rights and benefits due to them. The cruel Employer is bad spirited and highly selfish. He /She is capable of firing a new mother the first day she returns from maternity leave and see no wrong in this cruel act. They bully their employees. Bullying is being so persistently meant to employees that it causes them to want to quit, or perhaps they become so overwhelmed by the treatment that they fall apart and get fired. It is real shame and it is horrible. The process of this cruel act resulted in some employees leaving their employers after being bullied so badly that a few attempted suicide and now can’t find a job and they are heavily medicated and profoundly depressed. Its victims often suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—the psychological condition most of us associate with cataclysmic violence, rape, genocide or the witnessing of atrocities. Ironically, it is not unlawful in their sphere and environment. The Bad Employer cannot separate the personal behaviour from the professional behaviour. He /She do not see work as work. His /Her employees are constantly fighting each other at work because of bad-mouthing one to the other. The Good Employer offers a flexible work schedule directed by the job description. He /She care for his/her employees and always interested to see them happy and gaining knowledge

in what they do. They foster a culture that is creative, fun filled and conducive to work. We have wise Employers who give mentorship and development to all his/her employees regardless of their positions and status. Does not take employees for a ride or for granted. He /She do not apply a one size fits all approach to all his/her employees. He /She ensure that all employees grow to maturity in all human aspects. He /She put a system of annual financial growth to all employees in order to minimize complains and dissatisfactions. Employee’s integrity is his/her priority. There is a stupid Employer who always asks his /her employees stupid and foolish questions. Stupid employers are pathetic in outlook and very clumsy and dump. Their stupidity embarrass and annoys their employees irrespective how hard their employees try to protect and defend them against their customers.

Trumpet and sexaphone maestro, David “Mainline” Ngobeni

announced recently during a performance to entertain a group of journalists who attended a media briefing on the grand opening of Sheerwalk Conference and Leisure Centre at Murray Hill that the Badimo Jazz Band will tour America in June and July next year.

Badimo will take on the tour to America with the Blue Gospel Sound and during the next 13 months they will go on a fundraising expedition through all the nine provinces of Mzansi. Hlanga Henry Coka of the Blue Gospel Sound explained that when they tour America the two groups are going to merge into one group with one name.

Ngobeni who is the owner and founder of the band emanates from the rural Mathibestad village, near Hammanskraal.Badimo has taken the South African music industry by storm and it is rare to find this excellence in the rural areas, it is only common in the glittering cities such as Johannesburg.

Lesego Nkonyane blows her way up to success

Badimo as a band is well known in Jazz Circles, as it performs in different jazz festivals and jazz gigs at home and African countries. The tour of America is going to be sponsored and facilitated by a tourist who saw them perform at Red Onion in Soshanguve.

When Ngobeni was told that taking Jazz to America, was just

like selling coal to Emalahleni, he answered that Badimo is going to give Americans what they do not have, being Afro Jazz, Mbaqanga and African Gospel.

“Jazz started in Africa and was imported to New Orleans. The problem is that our people are ignorant about some of the facts. The power behind my

success as a jazzman emanates from my ancestors. I do not just act in isolation, they are part and parcel of what is happening. My music also feeds their souls.”

“I have a strong bond with my ancestors. Badimo means ancestors. That is why I was able to easily incorporate my family into the band. All of us in the band are related. I have a wide

The sassy and talented Saxophonist, Lesego Nkonyane of ‘Ladies in Jazz’ fame has finally released her much anticipated mellow first solo debut album titled ‘Lesego la me,’ to mark her ten years in the music industry.

The four year in making album, features ten sultry tracks with distinctive strong Afrocentric elements.

Speaking to Sosh Times, Nkonyane said she felt that it was about time for her to spread her wings. On the album Nkonyane has worked with and unearthed a number local artists.

“I started working on my album in 2010. I have featured local artists that are not yet well known. My aim was to compile an album that has a strong message, yet creating warm melodic sounds with African instruments,” said Nkonyane.

In her younger days, Nkonyane gracefully started out as a dancer and performer for Kwaito outfit Trompies and Prophets of the City.

experience of more than thirty years in the industry. My eldest son Elinton, was named after the international Jazz legend Duke Elinton ,

“Elinton was sent to the Cresco Music College in Johannesburg. This was done after I noticed that his fingers were compatible with the keyboard. Sending him there was just a question of polishing his talent,” said Ngobeni.

Ngobeni said that Elington is a polished piano player who can feature or fit in any music group in the country, even abroad.

He went further to say other members of the family, including his wife Mapula, his son Phillip and their cousins just followed up Elintons footsteps automatically.

Badimo have produced three CD’s and a DVD, namely Madlaisana Volume1, Madlaisana Volume2, Balanbya ba ka Ngobeni and Live DVD at Morula Sun.

Badimo is composed of the following members – Phillip Ngobeni (Drums), Samuel Makhubela (Bass) Enoch Moale (Percussion), Kgwadi Solly Matseke (Piano), Neo Mogotsi (Trombone), Mapula Ngobeni (Jembe and Toys) and David “Mainline” Ngobeni (Tenor sax, Alto sax and Flute)

like Egypt, Mali and Botswana and also got the opportunity to perform in a drama produced by Mbongeni Ngema, Letta Mbuli and Nakedi Ribani at the State theatre.

The saxophone songbird is a graduate of FUBA School of music and Mmabana in Mmabatho where she honed her skills to perfection.

This is where she met a group of women to form a band named “Diva”. In 2002 she then came to Mabopane Art essemble where she was recruited as a

band member of “Ladies in jazz”.

Nkonyane sells her album independently and will be touring Botswana later this year. She urged the people of Mzansi to stop the current xenophobic attacks in our country.

“We are artists and need to earn a living, we need to perform in other countries and to do that we must be accepted by foreign nationals. I plead to my fellow South Africans to stop killing our brothers and sisters,” she said.

Tau’s team roared at an international stage

1. WELCOME TO SPORTS TALK, MHLEKASI!!THROUGHOUT YOUR SOCCER CAREER, YOU HAVE ALWAYS PLAYED WITH PASSION AND COMMITMENT. HOW DO YOU COMPARE THE CURRENT CROP OF PLAYERS TO THOSE OF YOUR DAYS?-Thank you. Well, to be honest with you football in South Africa has evolved so much over the years. However, if the truth is to be told the current crop of players do not display that level of commitment, passion and self-discipline. Even though talent is galore in our country you would agree with me that talent alone is not enough. Today’s boys play soccer for other reasons which include, among others, to satisfy their lavish lifestyle, to make money and to go ply their trade overseas. In the olden days players would go all out to win matches not for money but for the love of the game.2. YOU HAVE PLAYED FOR A NUMBER OF TEAMS BEFORE YOU RETIRED.HOW HAS

THAT MOULDED YOU INTO A PROLIFIC PLAYER YOU CAME OUT TO BE?-I will be frank with you that I could not have chosen other teams to play for to be the well –rounded, much-sought after player I was. Every team I have played for gave me a unique yet fulfilling experience that I needed for personal growth. I started playing for Umthata Bushbucks (1995) while studying completion of my teacher’s diploma. I then joined the mighty Kaizer Chiefs in 1995 and later proceeded to Dynamos.3. LOOKING BACK INTO YOUR SOCCER CAREER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WERE YOUR BEST MOMENT IN TIME?-That’s a tough one because really one has done a lot but I think the few that stand out for me would be helping Bushbucks to win the Coca Cola cup in 1994. Secondly playing an instrumental role in helping Dynamos get promoted to PSL.4. YOU ARE ALSO A SOCCER COACH. PLEASE TALK US THROUGH THAT.-Correct, when I officially retired

from professional football, I then obtained my level 1 & 2 coaching licence. I was a coach for Dynamos and later moved to Bidves Wits as an assistant coach. I later moved to Mpumalanga Black Aces as an assistant coach. Later on I went on to coach a Vodacom team, Soshanguve Sunshine. It has been such an exhilarating experience I am always proud of.5. ANY SAD STORY OR WORST EXPERIENCE THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?-Not playing for almost a season after being shot by the police for suspecting that I was driving a stolen vehicle. That was a horrible experience I can never forget.6. WHO ARE SOME OF THE BEST PLAYERS OF YOUR DAYS WHO MADE FOOTBALL LOOK EASY?-Wow, the list is endless. However, the few that come to mind include the likes of Shakes Kungwane, Frank Makua, the Mugeyi brothers, Ace Khuze and so on.7. TELL ME, IS IT POSSIBLE FOR SAFA TO MAKE IT A COMPULSION THAT EVERY PROFESSIONAL SOCCER TEAM SHOULD

ADOPT A SCHOOL IN THEIR COMMUNITY, TO PROMOTE SCHOOL SPORTS AND AGAIN SUPPORT COMMUNITY SPORTS DEVELOPMENT?-I suppose that is an ideal scenario that can help unearth talent at an early age and further increase the pool of players for teams. However, the challenge is most of the senior teams do not have proper development structures which should look into such issues. There are few teams that are already doing that, I believe we should applaud sides like Mamelodi Sundowns, Supersport United and so on.8. YOU ARE CERTAINLY NOT GOING TO BE A COACH FOREVER. HOW WOULD YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED WHEN YOU ARE NO LONGER IN THE LIMELIGHT?-As someone who has helped create an enabling environment for our youngsters to realise their dreams of playing soccer and ultimately ply their trade in senior teams, national teams or overseas.9. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU CAN’T STAND

IN PEOPLE?-People who lie, gossip or who cheat.10. SOME OF THE THINGS YOU HATE IN PLAYERs?-Players who are big-headed and don’t take instructions or co-operate with the coach. Players who want to play as individuals and not as a team. Remember soccer is a team sport.

competed in the Masters’s division also won two trophies for obtaining position 1 in kumete and position 2 in kata.

The tournament is an annual event hosted by the Japanese in an attempt to promote karate in South Africa and Africa in general.

In an interview with Sosh Times the elated Mbete narrated his journey in the tournament.

“I am very happy that I won two trophies and my plan is to work even harder to become a world karate champ one day,”said Mbete.

Mpho Mokoma, the father to Aobakwe Mokoma was equally excited about his son’s achievement and encouraged parents to support their children so that they can realise their full potential.

“My son started doing karate in Grade 2, I am always with him at the training to support him,” ’said Mokoma senior.

Sensei Tau, who is also an executive member of Gauteng Karate and the Deputy President of Tshwane Karate, said the sport is a part of him.

“I started running this Karate and Taebo Dojo in 2005. Besides being passionate about the sports, the support and love that one receives from the community is what has sustained this club against all odds.Winning the trophies at the Kamazawa International Karate tournament is but a proof of a concerted effort by the community to rid our areas off crime and promote sports development,” said Tau.

they scooped a number of medals during the annual Kamazawa Karate International tournament in Durban recently.

Lucas ‘Skio’ Tau, an instructor and boss

of the Shotokan karate club in Orchards, Pretoria took a team of three boys, namely, Given Mbete (10), Njabulo Mahlangu (13) and Aobakwe Mokoma (9) to represent Tshwane Region 1 Sports council at the tournament.

The trio scooped medals each, in both kumete and kata respectively. On the other hand their master, Sensei Tau, who

The 19 year-old Soshanguve twins, Gift and Given Chochi, have jetted off to Alexandria, Egypt to represent the country in the Junior African wrestling Championships.

This comes after they qualified to take part in the national trails of the South African Wrestling Federation,

where Given came first in the Freestyle 46-50kg division and Gift won the Greco-Roman 50-55 kg division.

The twins joined the Zenzele wrestling club in 2009 at the age of 13 and have since continued to outshine the competition and earn their Junior Protea colours.

In an interview with Sosh Times, Gift said they

both developed the love for sport in 2009 after watching a wrestling match at Boikhutsong Community Hall in Soshanguve.

“It was not plain sailing for me because along the way, my school work started suffering, as I struggled to find the balance between the sport and my school work. But now am able to balance

the two. I wrestled for half a year in 2012 and won my first big tournament in 2013,” said Gift.

Gift says the freestyle category he will be fighting in requires the use of mind and technique, while the Greco-Roman division which his brother will be fighting requires both power and technique.

Gift said they have set their sight at clinching gold at the continental championships.

“For me wrestling is more than a sport, it is a vehicle that I plan to use to get out of poverty. We come from a family of 5, headed by my mother and it is our duty to make her and the country proud,” said Gift.
