* Place a number of familiar objects such as bananas, on a table in front of the class. Say in a puzzled voice, "¿Cuántos bananas hay?" Then begin to count them, inviting the class to join in. Say, "¿Cuántos duraznos hay?" Again, invite the class to count with you.* Select a number of girls (between 1 and 10) to stand in front of the class. Say, "¿Cuántas chicas hay?" Count the number of girls by saying, "una, dos, tres…" Do the same for the boys saying, "¿Cuántos chicos hay? Uno, dos, tres…"

* Encourage students to count to 10 along with the computer in the video. (Holding one's nose while speaking makes a funny nasal sound, like the computer!)

* Show the video again, and use the pause button where Bob is counting the "arbustos." He is counting by twos. Pause after each number and ask students to repeat after Bob .

VIEWING ACTIVITIES* Show the video. Ask the students to listen for "cuántos/cuántas" and have them count the number of times they hear these words. (Answer: 5 times)

* If a group of people contains both boys and girls, the group automatically becomes masculine, as in "¿Cuántos chicos hay?" You can also use "niño / niña" or "muchacho / muchacha" instead of "chico / chica".

GRAMMAR NOTE* In Spanish , a question is prefaced by an upside down question mark.* "Hay" rhymes with "why". The "h" is silent.* The number "one" changes in Spanish depending on the gender of the objects being described ("un / una").

Ask questions, such as: "¿Cuántas hamburguesas hay?" "¿Cuántos mapas hay?"Note. If it is difficult to procure quantities of these objects, use pictures instead.

* Place a number of familiar objects on a table. Divide the objects into two piles according to whether they are masculine or feminine. Say that we have to use "cuántas" for feminine objects and "cuántos" for masculine objects. For example: "¿Cuántas?" "¿Cuántos?" "hamburguesas" "duraznos " "ciruelas" "helados " " bananas" "mapas" "naranjas" Ask questions, such as "¿Cuántas hamburguesas hay?" "¿Cuántos mapas hay?" Note: If it is difficult to procure quantities of these objects , used pictures instead.

* Use Activity Sheets.

* Do simple math problems on the board. The answers need to be 10 or less.* Count by even and odd numbers using a bean bag.

* Use number flash cards for counting practice. Use them out of sequence, as students become proficient.

* Practice numbers by saying telephone numbers. Tell students that 0 is "cero."
