Over 40 years of great design, superb quality and excellent customer service set B&B apart from the competition, but that’s just the beginning of our story.

Digging a little deeper uncovers our professional construction methods, high engineering standards and top quality components that make up a B&B Pool’s unbeatable quality.

From plumbing and equipment to finishes and features, compare the differences in materials and workmanship that separate average pool building from the highest quality pool design and construction. The illustration on the following pages has circled numbers that correspond to the story. Know the differences before you hire a company to build a pool on your property.

Professional Design, Landscaping and Engineering –There’s more to a beautiful pool than meets the eyeAll pool customers have specific desires for their pool. Every home has unique attributes that need to be considered when designing a pool to fit both your topography and the home. That’s the reason B&B’s permanent staff includes a licensed Landscape Architect who helps integrate your lifestyle and imagination into your pool design.

When it comes to intricate construction, Craig Bagin knows how to engineer the design and build your pool to last. He’s done the seemingly impossible from building pools atop cliffs to creating hills to accommodate multiple waterfalls. B&B has placed elegant designs into constrained properties. We have invented tools and methods for precision installation. Your pool investment deserves professionals who have the expertise to handle the particulars of design as well as to implement and complete your project. Hiring a pool builder with a licensed architect on staff means you’re hiring a true design-build firm.

Cutting Corners Always Cuts QualityMany pool builders rely upon canned designs that are too small or get squeezed to fit the property. Their sales people show you an assortment of fixed shapes and sizes not adaptable to your needs. These builders do not have the experience, vision or artistry to conceive of what is possible on a particular property. So many pool builders simply cobble together ideas into a pool that may be functional, but lacks the aesthetic appeal of one designed by a true professional.

If your property has an unusual shape or topography, a pool builder lacking the necessary skills could leave you with a permanent installation that never quite satisfies the desire that first got you to purchase the pool. Remember, the pool you purchase today will be in your backyard for a long time to come.

Plumbing Engineered for Pools To make sure your pool’s water is crystal clear, B&B analyzes every design we build to determine the precise plumbing configuration needed. B&B engineers the plumbing to optimize water flow. We use only large piping to feed the appropriate number of properly located water returns around the pool. Larger piping and more returns allow the flow to be easily adjusted. Optimally your pool water should turn over four times each day. Proper flow rate keeps your pool cleaner, lowers operating costs, and is a key part of B&B’s IntelliPool® system.

Larger Pipes Improve Water QualityB&B uses larger pipes to reduce flow resistance, which allows a pool to run a more efficient, lower horsepower pump. Larger pipes let the smaller pump accomplish the same tasks as a larger one — resulting in up to 80% less power used, dramatically reducing your electricity costs. Water flow is also eased by B&B’s technique of heat-bending PVC pipes into soft curves, rather than slowing flow with 90-degree angled joints. This method produces an overall cleaner pool because higher water flow enables B&B to fully filter and turn over water four times a day. This design also saves you money while maintaining optimal water quality.

Save $600 to $1300 Every Year with IntelliFlo® PumpsB&B uses Pentair Pool Products’ patented IntelliFlo® variable speed pumps, which use a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor — similar to those used in hybrid cars. B&B’s easy-flow piping allows lower pump speeds that save you money. Digital controls and proprietary software let you set different pump speeds for specific tasks — filtering, heating, cleaning, etc. — saving you $600 to $1300 yearly on energy costs.

Ease of Operation with IntelliTouch® Controls Saves Maintenance Costs and Time

Pentair’s IntelliTouch® Control System lets you remotely monitor, operate and adjust your pool systems from the interior of your home. Remote operation from any computer is also available.

IntelliChlor® Salt-Based Chlorine Generator With a B&B pool, you automatically create chlorine from salt using Pentair’s patented IntelliChlor® Generator. IntelliChlor® keeps the water sparkling clear and eliminates the irritating compounds that can bother your skin and eyes. Plus, because IntelliChlor® uses a patented mineral blend, your water will have a soft, silky feel. And you won’t have to buy, measure or store chlorine ever again.

Plumbing Short Cuts Other pool builders don’t give much thought to water flow. In order to save on construction costs, many pool builders eliminate water returns – only including one or two – to reduce the amount of piping and labor. These “short cuts” lead to less than optimal water flow, resulting in a dirtier pool. What’s more, although they may be cheaper initially, your operating and maintenance costs will be higher year after year.

Smaller Pipes Sacrifice CleanlinessTo save on parts and labor costs, other pool builders use smaller pipes, which result in a higher resistance to water flow. Some builders cut corners by using “Flex Pipe” that is vulnerable to carpenter ants and termites. Other “short cuts” include using many 90-degree fittings, which increases resistance to water flow.

Increased resistance causes the pump – no matter the size – to work harder and use more power, increasing electricity costs. Due to these restrictions, their pumps have to work harder and as a result their water turn over is only twice a day.

Many Pumps Work Harder and Cost MoreSome pool builders install cheaper pumps that use excessive amounts of electricity to operate — because they run at full speed all the time. In order to lower the water volume run through these pumps, some builders add valves, which force the pumps to work even harder and drastically shorten their lifespan. While these pumps may lower your initial outlay, they increase your ongoing maintenance costs.

High Maintenance SystemsNormal construction requires the pool or spa owner to spend hours skimming the pool for leaves, checking the pH levels … adding chemicals … etc., etc.

Storing Harsh ChemicalsChlorine is a harsh chemical that has to be stored and handled safely. Global demand continually raises its price. Too much chlorine can act as an irritant to the eyes and skin of swimmers. Too little chorine can leave your pool susceptible to bacterial growth. It takes your time and requires care to use chlorine properly.

IntelliChem® automatically monitors and balances your water daily Pentair’s IntelliChem® offers the same advanced technology used in commercial pools and waterparks. Keep your water’s pH balance right and use just the right amount of chemicals to keep your water sparkling clean and safe. IntelliChem® allows you to spend more time enjoying your pool and family.

Clean and Clear® Plus Filters Reduce Energy and Water UseAnother Eco Select™ Pentair product, Clean and Clear® Plus Filters let water flow very easily through your pool system, allowing lower pump speeds that reduce energy use and cut your costs. Since the filter’s cartridges can be rinsed your water use and costs are also significantly reduced.

The Most Efficient, Reliable Pool Heater AvailableWith the short swim season in the Northeast, most new pools include a heater. B&B is pleased to offer the compact MasterTemp® high performance heater from Pentair. Optimized fuel/air mix provides a faster heat-up. And it’s extremely efficient which makes it very economical to operate. B&B has other solutions for heating pools including heat pumps and solar heat. We provide the solution that works best for your pool.

Durability Begins with Strong FundamentalsB&B uses 1/2-inch diameter steel reinforcing bars throughout the entire pool. We also use four reinforcing bars that bond to the gunite (cement-like substance) in both the floors and walls of your pool. This extra reinforcement protects B&B’s pools from the pressure of the earth’s expansion when the ground freezes in the winter.

In addition, B&B constructs pools with 8-inch thick gunite walls and floors. Furthermore, B&B adds water only at the gunite nozzle, just before it is blown onto the walls and floors. By applying gunite using this method, B&B’s experts control the process, ensuring the durability of the pool. Injecting water into the gunite at the nozzle ensures a consistent mixture and produces a stronger, evenly applied material that helps protect against cracks and leaks for the life of the pool.

To ensure durability, B&B insists its pools withstand a pressure of at least 5,000 pounds per square inch (PSI) — much greater than other pool builders. The strongest, longest lasting shells are constructed with properly applied gunite. One of B&B’s permanent staff is a skilled Gunite Application Supervisor who oversees every pool B&B builds. Known as a “nozzle-man,” he brings more than 16 years of professional experience shooting gunite. It’s one of the reasons B&B gives customers a 10-year limited warranty on the shell and a 3-year warranty on the equipment pad.

Improperly balanced water can be harsh on you and your poolside Ideally pool water’s chemistry should be checked daily to keep the water properly balanced, sanitary and safe. Without an automated system, you have to take the time to test your water, add the proper chemicals and monitor the water to be certain it’s properly balanced.

Cheap Filters End Up Costing MoreTrying to save money by using undersized filters can create problems that cost you much more later. Undersized filters or those with multiport valves slow the water flow and strain the pool’s pump causing it to consume much more electricity and increase the costs of operating your pool.

Inefficient Pool Heaters Waste Energy and MoneyInefficient heaters warm up pools slowly and burn lots of costly energy. The result is higher operating costs to the owner – and more harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Many pool builders cannot help you compare alternative solutions for heating a pool on your property because they aren’t up-to-date on the innovations available for pools today.

Look for the Weak LinksMany pool builders cut costs by using thinner (3/8-inch diameter) reinforcement bars to strengthen the shell. Then, at the frost line where support is crucial, others often reinforce with two bars, not four as B&B does. Reinforcement with smaller and fewer steel bars makes the pool vulnerable to expansion and contraction cracks caused by freezing.

Many pool companies build pools with only 6-inch thick floors and walls. In addition, rather than gunite, many use pre-mixed “shotcrete” as their pool shell material. Too often pool builders apply shotcrete in an inconsistent mixture with too much water, which weakens the structural integrity of the shell. Shotcrete also begins setting when water is added, so builders who use pre-mixed material run the risk of a weaker finished shell. A weaker shell increases the risks of leaks and cracks, especially in winter months when the ground freezes.

Pool shells hold a great volume of water under enormous pressures. Many pool builders use “shotcrete” to build the shell – a liquid cement that starts losing its strength as soon as water is added at the plant. The longer it takes to apply wet cement, the weaker the pool’s shell. As a consequence, other builders can never be sure how much pressure (PSI) their pools can withstand. Shotcrete requires less skill to apply, and has nowhere near the strength or durability of properly applied gunite.

Carefully Crafted Water FeaturesWhen constructing wet walls, vanishing edges, natural stone waterfalls and other water features, B&B erects a complete, steel-reinforced foundation. It includes a separate holding tank for the water feature giving it even more structural integrity. The water feature becomes an integral part of the pool structure with no chance of movement. This method protects against the risk of cracks or loosened seams. Impeccable craftsmanship ensures that no cement is ever seen, because B&B’s builders take extreme care in smoothing and hiding joints. We even dye the cement to match the color of the water feature and the pool.

Putting Experience on Your PropertyEvery B&B employee has a minimum of 10 years of experience in the pool building industry. Many have been with B&B for 25 years. Rather than hiring the cheapest workers, B&B hires the same crews year after year. This ensures they are familiar with B&B’s superior standards of quality and consistency. Yes, you need to ask who is in your backyard and B&B is proud to answer that question.

Cutting Corners on BeautyWhen building water features, some builders construct only a partial foundation by using a concrete slab that is not integrated into the pool structure. When they do not integrate the water feature into the pool, they risk it separating from the pool. Neglect in this area increases chances of movement, which will result in leaks. Once the stonework for a water feature is in place, many pool builders are sloppy when finishing the joints so that different colors of their cement work shows through, spoiling the beauty of the pool and the water feature.

Hiring Inexperienced Work Crews Typically, other pool builders hire crews at the beginning of each season. In an effort to cut costs, they often hire whichever crew members they can pay the least. This tactic often means they work with different people every year, reducing their employees’ familiarity with the company’s practices – making mistakes a common occurrence.

Uneven Stonework Other pool builders often cut corners with their workmanship on the finishing touches. Instead of making clean seams and edges, they use small stones and grout to fill the gaps between larger pieces. This creates more seams, a less attractive look and opportunity for problems over time.

StonesB&B’s master masons hand-cut large stones for patios and surfaces around the pool. Each piece is handcut to fit precisely. This technique reduces the number of stones and the seams. Your patios are easier to maintain and longer lasting.
