MORE JCNA NEWSLETTER AWARDS!Each year JCNA presents Newsletter Awards in six categories: Photography, Event Reports, Heritage, Travel, Technical and Jaguar Life. In the years 2006 to 2017, CXKJR members have won twenty-three times for photos and articles in Classical Gas. It is interesting to note that there are over sixty JCNA clubs with newsletters, so this is not a minor accomplishment. The 2018 JCNA Newsletter Awards have just been announced and CXKJR member Les Garbutt won 1st place in the Jaguar Life category for his article “Born to be Wild” in the January February 2018 issue and 2nd place in the Events category for his “I-Pace First Drive” in the November December issue. Allan Lawrence won a 2nd place for his Technical article “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates” in the January February issue.

Classical Gas | 9 March | April 2019

I bought my first Jaguar from Flight Sergeant Thompson at RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ottawa, Ontario in June

1962. It was a black 1951 Mark 7 saloon, with a beige interior and a 3.4 litre four speed manual.

He had purchased it in Paris while he was stationed in France, and brought it back to Canada in the hangar deck of HMCS Bonaventure. He also had a Jensen aluminum bodied Austin A40 convertible and a brand new Ford station wagon, and was being transferred with his family to RCAF Station Comox in B.C. The Air Force would only pay to ship two vehicles, so either the A40 or the Mark 7 had to go. He wanted $350.00 for each, and really wanted to sell me the Austin, which I found woefully under powered, so the Jaguar became mine.

As far as I know, it is the second oldest surviving Mark 7, there being one a few serial numbers earlier in Switzerland. It had been exhibited at the Frankfurt Auto Show and was built as a right hand drive. Sold from the show to a German businessman, it was promptly converted to LHD and the wiring, generator, etc. to Bosch from Lucas. It has two serial number plates, one in English and one German. It spent the first five years of its life registered at the Palais Victoria in Cannes, France. It still has the original RHD driver’s side carpet with the pedal holes sewn over.

The first mechanical problem I had was with the front brakes dragging and heating the front drums to the point where it was throwing grease out of the wheel hubs. Not knowing any better, I booked it into the local Jaguar dealer Manotick Motors for service. A month’s pay later and a lesson learned, I got my car back just in time to decide to drive it back to B.C. for my month’s leave!

As an 18 year old with only a basic knowledge of Jaguars, I was either very brave or stupid, and with a

minimum of funds in the days before freeways and the completion of the Trans Canada Highway. I still have my diary detailing the trip, which would take another chapter to relate. I made it in three days and I still own the car.

An interesting aside is that my car was parked at Manotick Motors beside a stunning white 1939 Jaguar

SS100 3 1/2 litre S/N 39085 that belonged to Professor Brian Spenceley. The apprentice working on both our cars was Richard Sladen, later of Coventry Motors fame in Vancouver, with whom I shared many later motoring adventures. I kept in touch with Professor Spenceley and was fortunate enough to

purchase the SS100 from him and owned it for decades. There is a huge “backstory” regarding that car!

After receiving my service invoice from Manotick I bought a toolkit and a service manual and never looked back. I still twist wrenches.

Why did I buy a Jag? My parents never owned an interesting car, usually some really embarrassing ones, but my Uncle Howard Quinton in the U.K. was quite well off and in 1960 had a Mark 9. When we were there for a family visit he let me drive it. I was 16 and hooked for life; the rest, as they say, is history. n

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Our club’s prime location in the West Building of the Vancouver Convention Centre ensured that most of the

115,000 attendees to the March 19 – 24 show walked past our display. We were fortunate to be provided a large space by Hagerty Classic Car Insurance, a long-time supporter of CXKJR/CCMGC. Many thanks to Nigel Matthews, Hagerty’s Global Director of Private Client Services and Company Ambassador, for facilitating our club’s involvement in the show.

Six club cars were on display: Tony & Carole Cohen’s 1952 MG TD Mk II, Steve & Sheila Kaufman’s 1960 MGA roadster, Steve & Nell Collins’1968 MGB GT, Krista Brigg’s 1966 Jaguar E-Type OTS, and both Ian & Doreen Newby’s 1987 XJ-S Hess & Eisenhart convertible and their 1993 Jaguar XJ40. The Newbys also had their very rare, locally-built 1988 Enterra on display. A photo of the Collins’ MGB GT was published in one of the Auto Show newsletters.

Brianne Kindzersky, National Account Executive with Hagerty at the show, checked with the company’s head office to find out the approximate total value of the three MGs and three Jaguars in the CXKJR/CCMGC display. The total was just under $650,000.

Comments from CCMGC Vice-President Mike McChesney, who was at the Convention Centre for the six days of the show and coordinated our club members who took shifts covering our display:

The display received a lot of attention from the people streaming past our display. Lots of: “I had one, let it go and now regret I did”, to Lucas Prince of Darkness and leaking oil jokes. Lots of picture taking. Many people recognized the cars from their past. Sometimes we’d see someone looking closely at one of our cars, we asked them a question, a big smile would appear, and they’d tell us a favorite MG or Jag story from their past. A good number of people showed interest in joining the club. Some young people - the youngest was a 14 year old with his dad. The dad said his son has two Mercedes but has a passion for Jaguars (the kid having two Mercedes stopped me for a bit). The son gave us his views on his favorite Jaguars. For him it was the classics, not interested in the new Jags at all. The dad said his son will likely switch to Jaguars. (I’m still trying

to process this interest in classic Jaguars from someone so young).

Jason and Phil Heard, two of the key organizers with the Auto Show, have been great in supporting us. They remarked about the way our club members operated together as a team, working with the show schedule for a seamless move of our cars in and out. 20 of our members did a terrific job of volunteering their time to cover the display. They all did well answering questions, relaying entertaining stories about our cars and selling the Club. Special thanks go to Ian Newby and Peter Tilbury for organizing the Club’s presence at the show. n

12 | Classical Gas March | April 2019 Classical Gas | 13 March | April 2019

I f you were there, you already know that the Beatles Night, February 16th, was the best winter party ever. We’ve attended

many club winter parties as they evolved from a Christmas party to a January party. All, of course, required a lot of work and planning and each had its own excellent points. However, Beatles Night had it all:

The entertainment: Fab Fourever looked, spoke and performed like the real deal. It took us right back to the 60’s and “Beatlemania.” The band didn’t skip a beat as they played all the Beatles hits. We could hardly believe a tribute band could be that good.

The venue: Some of us have been to “The Cavern Club” in Liverpool, where the Beatles played often. The Cavern has a small stage and is not a particularly large facility. It is just the type of club where you would expect many soon-to-be famous performers to start off. Coghlan Hall in Aldergrove was thus much like the Cavern club. It had an old, homey ambiance, was not overly large, and just seemed right. The dance area kept us all close and was packed all night, but wasn’t that exactly the right feel for this party?

The food: Sure, we’ve had fancier spreads. The stew, salad and rolls were very good. Stew is rather British! We weren’t there to sit around at a gourmet meal; we were there for a lively party. The menu kept the cost reasonable. Oh, and the bar prices were

very reasonable as well. (And the “taxi” service was much appreciated.)

The people: Such a lively event and a great time to visit with members. I cannot recall another CCMGC/CXKJR party where, from the first song, so many people were up dancing and having fun! Jim & Sue McClagan sat next to us and as we chatted Jim remarked that it seemed far for us to drive for a concert. (We live in Kelowna.) I replied that it was not just the concert, but the people! That is really what our club is all about, isn’t it? Of course, the cars are a nice addition.

When we visited England in fall of 2017, our friends Roger & Jennifer Glover arranged a “Beatles Tour” in Liverpool. We traveled by coach and visited all the significant Beatles sites, including the Cavern Club. This greatly increased our appreciation of the Beatles, and added to our enjoyment of Beatles Night. If you visit England, by all means take the tour!

In conclusion, we want to thank Peter & Anne Tilbury and Ian & Doreen Newby, and anyone else involved, for their hard work in putting on “The Best Winter Party Ever!” Well done! n

THE BEST WINTER PARTY EVER!

And who are these people?

The Coughlan Hall was packed with over 100 party goers.

The dance floor was busy all night long.

CXKJR/CCMGC 50th AnniversaryA YEAR OF FUN & CELEBRATION

Easter Bunny RallySunday, April 14. For many years, CXKJR/CCMGC put on an Easter Bunny Rally each spring and it will be back as part of the 50th Anniversary schedule. Organized by Simon & Donna Austin, this will be a fun driving event through the countryside for the whole family and will include on-route questions to be answered, with prizes for the best scores. The event starts from the Campbell River Store in South Surrey (790 176th Street, Surrey, at 8th Avenue), with the first car out around 10:30 am. The route is about 90 km (55 miles) and 2 hours long, with a break at halfway and the finish at a pub for lunch. Easter bonnets are welcome. If you plan to participate, please notify Anne Tillbury by emailing [email protected] or texting to 604-889-0225. Indicate how many people will be at the lunch.

Drive Your MG or Jaguar DaySaturday, May 4 Organized by Mike McChesney, this year’s “marine-themed” event will start at Fraser River Park in Vancouver, in the parking lot at West 75th Avenue & Chateau Place. The route will take NW Marine Drive around the University of BC, along Point Grey Road, Beach Avenue and around Stanley Park. After crossing Lions Gate Bridge, the drive will head into West Vancouver, eventually taking Marine Drive to Fisherman’s Cove for lunch at the West Vancouver Yacht Club (limited to 50 people). A special lunch menu will include a burger combo and several soup & sandwich combinations. An additional treat – up to 30 participants will be able to visit Peter Welch’s world-class MG collection nearby. Given the limited spots for lunch and the Welch collection visit, those planning to participate need to sign up at the April club membership meeting or notify Jennifer Orum at [email protected].

Robson Park Membership MeetingTuesday, May 14 50 years to the day, our club had its first meeting at Robson Park. The May 14 membership meeting takes us back there for a low key, informal gathering with a display of old photos and memorabilia. All attending are invited to bring a historic item or photo they can speak briefly about. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Bring a folding chair.

MASH Bash

Saturday, June 22 A tieback to the Presidents’ Run to Whistler & Lillooet in 1991, an army camp with all the gear will be set up in Aldergrove at the Newby Estate. Participants will be loaned a uniform shirt, a hat and dogtags and there will be live entertainment, a catered meal and a suitable movie.

50th Anniversary Car BadgesLimited edition 50th Anniversary Club car badges are now available for purchase at $50 each. You have to be a Club member to buy these. Each badge is numbered (1 – 50), and you can request a particular number, if you wish. If the badge won’t be fitted to a car grill there is a clear plexiglas stand to allow the badge to be displayed on a book shelf at an extra cost of $20. Contact Doreen Newby at [email protected] to place your order before they sell out.

50th Anniversary Golf ShirtsThe club has golf shirts to commemorate our 50th Anniversary. They are $20 each and are available in women’s and men’s sizes in various colours. Many members have already bought theirs, but there will be a re-order processed. Call Anne Tilbury at 604 889 0225 to reserve your size and colour. Cash or cheque please.

Mike Powley Memorial Collectibles Night: March 12

1st Place Joe Carroll

2nd Place Jim Severs

3rd Place Peter Tilbury

Ian Newby

Photos by Maria Severs unless otherwise noted

1ST PLACE - JOE CARROLL: A display of ‘pocket money toys’. When I was a child, there were very few toys available in war-torn Britain and they were only available at Christmas. Arriving in Canada in the late 1950s, I was impressed with my buying power and began buying Dinky Toys for myself and my baby brother. I enjoyed myself and it got quite out of hand. So I brought all my miniature Jaguar and MG models and a bunch more that might tickle the members’ fancies. Thank you for the award - it is always a nice way to remember Mike Powley. He was a great friend and member of our club.

2ND PLACE - JIM SEVERS: My Collectibles Night display was a selection of Morse code keys I have collected over 50+ years of Amateur (Ham) radio. My first Scout badge as a teen was in code proficiency - I’ve always enjoyed using it, as Morse is more intelligible than voice in marginal reception conditions (plus I’m not blessed with a ‘radio announcer’s DJ voice’). Keys displayed are straight keys, semi-automatic keys and iambic keyers, my favourites being the ‘spy’ (miniature) keys and the ‘flameproof’ key used by the military.

3RD PLACE - PETER TILBURY: My display was a collection of golf shirts and tee shirts going back 25 years, depicting the logos of Club events, NAMGAR and NAMGBR events, and the evolving CCMGC/CXKJR logos. Basically, this was a display of anyone’s shirt drawers!

DOREEN NEWBY: “One is never too old to play with dolls.” My display celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Barbie Dolls. Created by Ruth Handler in 1959, they encouraged young girls to believe they could become anything they chose. Photo by Marj Carroll.

IAN NEWBY: “There is a story behind everything” My display depicted messages coming along with Barbie and Ken Dolls and included an XJS model assembled into the wee hours of the morning.

JENNIFER ORUM: This California Dream’n display included personal memorabilia from San Francisco and California, as well as a model of my MGB roadster, exported to California from England in January 1970. Photo by Marj Carroll n

O ne of the club’s most popular annual events, the Picnic will take place at the Confederation Park Miniature Railway,

located a few blocks north of Hastings in Burnaby at 120 North Willingdon Avenue. There are over two miles of track on two main routes, with steam and diesel locomotives hauling trains through two tunnels and over several bridges. 1/8 full size, the trains carry up to 30 passengers. What to bring? Your favourite car, picnic food, and folding chairs if you have room. There’ll be dedicated parking for MGs and Jags by the Penzance Drive entrance, with parking for non-marque sports cars along Willingdon Avenue and Penzance Drive and in the public lots on Penzance. Once you have arrived and parked, follow the signs and arrows to the west end of the station and the passenger maze. At the end of the maze there is a track crossing. Speak to one of the railway staff who will escort you across the track to the Car Club picnic area. Please note: FOR SAFETY REASONS YOU MUST BE ESCORTED ACROSS THE TRACK BY RAILWAY STAFF.The invitation includes the members’ extended families e.g. grandparents and grandchildren. Important note: Sometimes parents get upset when they bring the whole family and we are unable to carry their infants on the train. Infants unable to sit on the train seats and support themselves must be in a hands-free ‘snugli’ type carrier worn by an adult. The railway operates from 11 am to 5 pm. In the past most club members (and their families) were on site between 12:30 and 4:00 pm. How much? No charge. The club has arranged for complimentary rides on the trains. A concession sells hot dogs, ice cream, hot & cold drinks. Further information: Joe Carroll at [email protected] or 604-988-2497. n

22 | Classical Gas March | April 2019

On a recent Sunday morning one could be forgiven for wondering whether the

‘Octagon’ building houses a new religion, such was the swarm of people clamouring to enter and find a good seat. Those in the know, however, were scrambling for the opportunity to listen to Senior Technician Syd McNabb, and learn how to bring British cars back to life and keep them alive for a long time!

This year’s presentation on suspension was very informative, with a table covered in all kinds of bits and pieces, mostly for the lower parts of British cars. A vehicle was raised on a hoist which allowed us see, with Syd’s guidance, what the bits did and where they fitted.

What followed showed us where to look and how to test the components under the car and how they should operate. An interesting point raised was the need to be sure to use new fastenings that are not just bright and shiny but

made to the correct specifications. There was also advice on ‘plastic’ and ’rubber’ bushings that often are appropriate or better than the original materials used 50 years ago.

For many of us, the visit with Syd served to make us realize there are some parts of our cars where repairs are better left to experts like Syd and his co-workers.

Thank you Syd, Shop Manager Sean Kostrzewski and everyone at Octagon for an excellent visit, complete with Tim Horton’s refreshments!
