AmigoFall 2014 From the Desk of Vanita Mann ~~~~ As our show season has now ended it is really nice to reflect on the times we have had this past year. Thanksgiving is almost upon us and it is always a time to be thankful and to give thanks where it is neces- sary. I would personally like to Thank all of the Los Amigos Board Members: Jolie Hahn, Kelly Powers-Ponciano, Andres and Christina Salinas! Also to the other members who help to put on our shows that we couldn’t have done without, Carol Hacket, Helen Brown, Rosie Hefley, Judith Windwalker, Lisa Marie Walker, Carolyn Mittrick, Debbie Pye, Thea and Nicole Pichel, and Marilyn Doud. Thank you from the bottom of my HEART!!! I believe we had a wonderful show with the Honorable Marco Dapelo and Oscar “Pico” Castillo judging our show. But…. We couldn’t have had a better show without our Amazing Members who exhibited with their Beautiful Horses. The Saturday evenings events with the Tapas Party and fun Halloween Costume class, the Champagne class (which hasn’t seen that much par- ticipation in Years!!) The beautiful exhibition of our Musical Class and the Rancho Cojunto was really a High- light for me. It is always a great time when we all get together and celebrate the Love of our Peruvian Horse! As we go into the Holidays, I would like to wish everyone a Happy, and Safe Holi- day Season!!! May you eat a lot and not gain a Pound!!! Love to All!!! Growth Plates, Bone FusionSchedule of bone fusion is from the bottomup. The growth plate at the top of the coffinbone, in the hoof, is fused at birth.Short pastern - top & bottom between birthand 6 mos.Long pastern - top & bottom between 6 mos.and 1 yr.Cannon bone - top & bottom between 8mos. and 1.5 yrs.Small bones of knee - top & bottom on each, between 1.5 and 2.5 yrs.Bottom of radius-ulna - between 2 and 2.5 yrs.Weight-bearing portion of glenoid notch at top of radius - between 2.5and 3 yrs.Humerus - top & bottom, between 3 and 3.5 yrs.Scapula - glenoid or bottom (weight-bearing) portion - between 3.5 and 4 yrs.Hindlimb - lower portions same as forelimbHock - tibial & fibular tarsals - 4 yrs oldTibia - top & bottom, between 2.5 and 3 yrs.Femur - bottom, between 3 and 3.5 yrsNeck, between 3.5 and 4 yrs.; major and 3rd trochanters, between 3 and 3.5 yrs.Pelvis - growth plates on the points of hip, peak of croup (tubera sacrale), and points of buttock (tuberischii), between 3 and 4 yrs.Vertebral column (spine). A normal horse has 32 vertebrae between the back of the skull and the root ofthe dock, and there are several growth plates on each one, the most important of which is the one cappingthe centrum. The spine does not fuse until the horse is at least 5-1/2 years old. This figure applies to allhorses, small scrubby, range raised horses to huge Warm Bloods. The taller your horse and the longer itsneck, the later full fusion occurs. For a male add six months.Within the chain of vertebrae, the last to fully "close" are those at the base of the animal's neck--that'swhy the long-necked individual may go past 6 yrs. to achieve full maturity.

HUACO DORADO

In the mid-eighties, Huaco Dorado was a palomino stallion thenowned by Anne Chess. Old timers in the Peruvian Horse breedmay remember Anne and her beloved Huaco Dorado. This arti-cle relates to Anne, her horse, Hilario Carrera, and me endingwith the strangest of chance resulting in these people to returnto my life. I have included three photographs of paintingsCathy and I now own and their journey to us.

In the mid-eighties referenced above, my sister, Suzanne Bence, lived with Hilario Carrera in north Norco where Hilario ran atraining and breeding operation. Many will remember Hilario(now deceased) as being a Maestro Chalan who immigrated tothe US to become a famous trainer. This period of time wasprior to my involvement with the Peruvian Horse but I was rid-ing an Appaloosa, Babe, owned by my sister. I was, though, involved in amateur photography and accompanied Hilario andmy sister to many of the Southern California horse shows at thattime where I would take pictures from the rail and on thegrounds of horses I liked. It is the taking of these photos thatstarted the journey of these three paintings.

Huaco Dorado was a young stallion in trainingwith Hilario Carrera. He was quite well knownby owners at that time as Huaco had been trainedin the art of the Enfreadura and Dance of theMarinera, both high level reining accomplish-ments. Anne was a client owner who found outthat I did photography of our breed and looked atmany of my pictures. I did my own developmentand printing and had many pictures of manyhorses of that time. She liked what she saw andoffered to pay me to take pictures of her horse fora minimal fee. I made arrangements with Hilarioand on a Sunday afternoon went to Norco andwas given a riding exhibit of Huaco Dorado. Itook many pictures and supplied Anne with aproof set for review. She picked four pictures tobe printed which I gave her. At that time I fig-

ured these pictures would probably end up in picture frames at Anne’s home. I did hear sometime later that she hadpaintings made from these photos but had no information regarding artist, size, or framing.

After this time Huaco Dorado continued to be used as a demo horse at shows and demonstrations of the breed and variousfunctions. Anne became a carded judge in our breed and passed away after a freak horse accident in the early 2000’s.

Now fast forward to current times. Cathy actively reviews EBay looking for equestrian items as well as selling the sametype of items herself. One day in September I was in the living room watching the boob tube and Cathy asked me tocome into the computer room to look at a couple of paintings being offered for sale on EBay. She thought they lookedlike they could be paintings of Huaco Dorado but she couldn’t tell who the rider was. I looked at them and said the twolooked very similar to the pictures I had taken and that if so the rider was Hilario. I wasn’t sure but I told her that I hadtaken four pictures and heard Anne had had at least some converted to paintings.

HUACO DORADO (continued)I told her also that I was surprised that there wasn’t a painting of Huaco Dorado reared up where Hilario had himdancing side to side on his rear legs as part of the Dance of the Marinera. He was actually doing the demonstration to

music at this time.

This is when the story became really interesting for me.Cathy called the person selling the two paintings to try toget more information. She told the woman that I thoughtthere was a possibility that the paintings were renderingsof pictures I had taken years ago. She then asked how thewoman had acquired the two paintings and if by chancethere could be one of the same horse rearing. The womanexplained that part of her livelihood was the purchase andselling of possessions she acquired by buying out lots ofproperty abandoned at storage units. She would then, likethese two paintings, sell them on Ebay for income. Addi-tionally, she stated that indeed there was another paintingof the horse rearing but the framed paintings were woodframed with glass over and the rearing horse had crackedglass and therefore had not been listed with the other two.She also told Cathy that she had multiple other items fromthe same lot that had not yet been offered to sale. Theseincluded historical books (2) on the Peruvian Horse, acharcoal sketch of Huaco Dorado and Anne which hadbeen given to Anne by the Northwest Peruvian HorseClub as a thank you when she judged up there, and an-other painting of a horse named Eclipse del Sol. Whenasked how everything came to be abandoned Cathy wastold that all the woman knew was that payments on thestorage locker had ceased but she thought she had heardthat the last tenant was a chef. This meant nothing to usat the time. We had thought that the person most likely tohave Anne’s possessions would be her brother, TomChess, who also passed away a few years ago.

I later talked to my sister asking if Anne had any other relatives other than Tomand was told that she did not. She did tell me that Tom was a chef and there wasa story to the last painting not of Huaco Dorado. It seemed that Anne’s parentshad bought her Huaco Dorado. Both Anne and Tom showed at the time and Tomfelt left out and to make him feel better their parents decided to by him Eclipse.According to my sister this horse was a champion horse she thought from Idahothat Tom then began to show.

Huaco Dorado ultimately ended up being owned by Carolyn Walch. I don’tknow anything about Eclipse del Sol.

Cathy and I are now the proud owners of all three Huaco Dorado paintings; abook titled “The Peruvian Paso and His Classic Equitation” written by VerneAlbright and presented with a signed label of his appreciation of Anne on December 1, 1993; and a book titled “ELCABALLO PERUANO DE PASO” written and signed by Jose Antonio Dapelo V also hand messaged and signed byits author. This last book was published in Lima, Peru in 1995 and was a limited edition.

I felt this story worth writing as it so clearly shows what a small world of horses we own and raise is, and how thingscan make complete circles in our lives. It just seems so amazing to me that all of this history could so easily havebeen lost in a storage unit yet represented so much to all the people involved for so many years. This particular storyinvolved so many people and horses famous in our history as a Southern California horse world. I hope you enjoymy story as much as I enjoy reliving it.

From Dyan Paquette ~~I read about a Peruvian gelding at the San Diego Humane Society via Fal-con Ridge Rescue on Facebook. Nicky Branch had spotlighted 4 differentbreeds that were there and in need of rescuing. It was mentioned that therehad been an adoption event for horses that the Bonita branch had and hehad not been adopted due to behavior issues. Something told me I shouldgo look at him. I couldn't sleep all night. The next day I got to Bonitaearly to see him. The photos of him didn't do him justice. He was juststunning in person. I was told he was recently gelded and he was about 10years old. He was brought in with nearly 30 other horses that had comefrom north San Diego county in a hoarder situation. Most all horses werein together and there was so much manure that the gates wouldn't open toremove the horses. Most were vastly underweight. Feet were atrocious. Many mares were pregnant. "Sunny" as he was called, had been in a sepa-rate pen and wasn't as underweight but had to be dart tranquilized to be

touched. He has some scarring on bothsides of his nose that almost appears to beburned. I loved him at first sight. His looks re-minded me of my mare that i lost 2 years ago.Same color, same chrome. She was 7 when istarted her. It was the same story all over again. ihad brought some carrots and he came right overto the gate to be scratched and eat carrots. Itseemed like there was hope. The shelter asked me if i wanted to see the otherPeruvians. I wasn't aware that there were more. One 8 year old bay mare was already adoptedbut a 15 and 18 year old are still waiting for ahome. The 15 year old mare is very beautifuland has a kind face. the staff really liked her andsaid she was easy to handle. I paid $100 adop-

tion fee and made arrangements to pick up my gelding the next day. I wish i could have taken all of them. Two of my best friends went with me the next day to help. The staff at the shelter was very reluctant to let me"play" with him in his corral before he was loaded via chute and hauled off the property but i was adamant Iwanted 15 minutes with him. He had a halter that had been left on him for the entire 2 months at the shelter so all iwent in the corral with was a lead rope. no carrots this time. Within 5 minutes he had turned to face me and let mescratch him and in 5 more i had a lead rope clipped on and was able to lead him around the corral. I asked the staffto open the gate and let me lead him out. I just felt trust there from him. I led him to the trailer door and he wasvery willing to sniff the trailer and put his front two feet in. A little pressure from behind and he hopped in. Thestaff was shocked. I guess he had really been a hellion while at the facility.I have re-named him Llamativo because he is quite a head-turner, and of course, he needed a spanish name. Afterone week of round pen lessons, he has learned to join up and he follows me around like a big dog. He has learnedto not be "mouthy" and learned to pick up his feet. He is easy to catch but has issues with the halter touching hisnose where the scars are. He loves being brushed all over. He is learning "this is my space, this is your space" andde-sensitizing games have begun. A plastic bag is not so scary and he has walked across some metal fencing on theground. He is wicked smart and loves to play. He has a ton of energy and is super athletic. I have to assume therehas been no riding on him so we have a lot of work before we get to that.I have done so much with my Peruvians. I have done cow work, mountainriding, camping and trail riding in at least 6 states, trail trials and enduranceriding, some showing and a million parades. My guess is that Tivo would behappy to go straight up the side of a mountain and he has the energy andbody to do it. I'll keep you posted. Our story is just beginning…..It feels very rewarding to have helped "save" him. I have recently found outthat due to his behavior, he was on the euthanasia list at the shelter. I amlooking for any information on his previous life or breeding. If he looks fa-miliar, please contact me. In what I do, I don't need his papers, but some-times a bit of knowledge can go a long way to help me train him.Thank you! Dyan and Tivo

Termino is the most distinctive feature of the PeruvianPaso and is perhaps the most difficult to analyze. It is acomplicated movement involving the entire forelimband is executed so rapidly the human eye can only per-ceive it in fragments. Even the most experienced afi-cionados find it difficult to concisely describe the sub-tle variations. A neophyte will probably be confusedabout termino for at least a year and much of the prob-lem lies in the lack of a uniform definition. When Ibecame interested in Peruvian Pasos several years ago,the only consistent thing I heard about termino was thatall horses of the breed have it. Some people say, "themore temino the better the horse" and other opinionsare equally adamant that exaggerated termino is unde-sirable. References are made to "high termino" and"low termino" but these terms are bantered with nocommon point of reference. "High termino" to somemeans a movement originating in the shoulder but oth-ers refer to it as exaggerated action in the lower leg.Janetta Michael and I were discussing breed standardsa couple of years ago and after discovering that it issomewhat like describing a spiral staircase* withoutusing your hands, we agreed on a reasonably concisedescription."Termino is an outward rolling of the front limbs dur-ing extension. It should originate in the shoulders andbe associated with obvious "looseness" and fluidity inthe movement of the shoulder girdle. This allows wellgaited horses to reach out and forward in a smooth, graceful manner with minimal transmission of verticalforce to the back. Horses devoid of this quality cannotextend smoothly and they frequently move in the frontwith short, "choppy" steps. Termino in the lower fore-limb consists of anterior and lateral rotation aroundaxes in the knee and fetlock. As the limb extends, thefoot swings out in a lateral arc before returningsquarely to the ground. The amount of vertical actionvaries considerably among individuals and must beevaluated in accord with the smoothness and eleganceof gait. For example, a horse with limited verticalmovement may be extremely smooth and extend well, but lack the crisp animation that is desirable in a showhorse. Conversely, a horse with high action and poorextension or roughness of gait cannot be considereddesirable. Ideally termino begins with a free, fluid roll-ing movement in the shoulders and is executed withgood extension. The relationship between lateral andvertical action in the knee and fetlock should providethe appearance of brisk, harmonious animation with noappreciable sacrifice in smoothness."

This was subsequently incorporated into the PeruvianPaso Breed Standards and has received the approba-tion of several Peruvian breeders including Sr. Fer-nando Grana. Whether this definition gains popularacceptance remains to be seen. But it isn't importantto quibble over definitions so long as everyone isaware of the importance of looseness in the shouldersas an absolute requisite for a Peruvian Paso to moverapidly and smoothly. A horse with flashy action inthe lower forelimb will cover ground slowly or berough in gait if there is not an accompanying free-dom of movement in the upper limb. conversely, ahorse may have meager action in the lower forelegbut still have smoothness and good reach because ofthe ability of the shoulder to swing easily in a for-ward lateral arc.Several years ago a North American judge with littleknowledge of Peruvian Pasos, gave a high award to ahorse with high, eye-catching movement in the lowerfront legs but almost no lateral flexibility in theshoulders. The rider was able to conceal the rough-ness of the gait by not sitting down firmly in the sad-dle. The judge didn't ride any of the horses andprobably didn't suspect what a rough unpleasant gaithe was awarding as meritorious. The selection wouldundoubtedly have been different had he known toobserve the shoulders for free lateral movement andnot fixate entirely on "low termino."Although this discussion has dealt exclusively withaction in the forelimbs it is not meant to belittle theimportance of other factors in determining the qualityof gait. The manner of impulsion provided by thehind limbs is also distinctive in the Peruvian Pasoand will be the subject of future discussions. Thesequence and tempo of limb movement as well asvariables in conformation demand consideration, butare not within the scope of this article.Probably the best method of analyzing termino andgait is with slow motion and stop action video analy-sis. Sr. Fernando Grana utilized a video tape recordof the North American Championship show in SantaRosa, California this year to conduct the judgingseminar. It was tremendously effective and enabledhim to communicate his observations to the groupwith ease and clarity. A more formal and extensiveuse of video would be invaluable in a post showanalysis of the gait classes each year and over a num-ber of years could provide a repository of materialuseful in studying genetic factors in determining gaitcharacteristics. How would you like to see slow mo-tion movies of Limenito, Carnaval or Caramelo intheir prime?* Spiral staircase -- a series of equidistant steps builtin an arc around a common vertical center with apredetermined rise and fall in each complete circle.(See drawings, next page)

TerminoBy Henry Curry, Jr., MDwith drawings by Karen Zahlis(continued)

Example 1Loose shoulders and good high termino. The optimalblend of esthetics and function is free lateral movement inthe shoulder combined with crisply animated rotation liftand extension of the leg. A horse with this movement hasthe flashy action desirable for show and can also coverground with speed and smoothness.Example 2Loose shoulders, meager low termino. This action willenable a horse to move efficiently and smoothly but notcommand as much attention as the first example.Example 3Tight shoulders, high action. Visually impressive, but nota good ride, this horse will either take short steps, be roughin gait, or both.

Edmundo Alejandro Galvez, born 24 April 1941, passed awayin September this year.

I first met Ed in 1989 when I attended an Open House at hisranch in Hemet. I had met his wife, Sharon, a few years earlierwhen I traveled with a friend to their ranch in Moreno Valleyto deliver a horse. I had, of course, seen him ride in the arenafor a few years before actually meeting him. I intently fol-lowed his adventures in the purchase, breeding and showing ofhis stallion, *Resalado. My first Peruvian was a half sister to*Resalado, so you could say I had a “vested interest” in thisparticular horse.

Ed was a fixture at the shows in the 80’s & 90’s, and continuedto ride many years after that. I have photographed many horseswhere he was the exhibitor. But, the photos that always come

to mind when his name is mentioned are those I took thatday at the Open House in 1989. I’m including a few of Ed,on *Resaldao.

Tho, I didn’t know Ed apart from the horse shows, I am sadthat I will not see him again, on a horse or striding aroundthe shows. Rest in Peace!

RANCHO VISTA DEL SOL RANCH NEWS (continued)From the valley we took anarrow trail which took usback up the mountain to a fireroad on the ridge. From thisridge was an even better viewof both sides of the mountain. You looked east to the SanJacinto range where Idyllwildis at the top, your could see allthe way to the Anza BorregoValley where you lookeddown Coyote Canyon, andsouth where Highway 74 takesyou to Palm Desert. A shortdistance down the ridge you looked down on Paradise Cove to where we were riding to stop at the Café for lunch. Weimmediately headed down the mountain and ended up at Highway 74 about ¼ mile from the café. We crossed the high-way to a dirt road on the other side and walked to the Café where we crossed back over the highway. Here we were metby friends with our horse trailer and water for the horses for an hour’s break. We also had two riders meet up who haddecided to not ride the first portion of the ride due to having young horses not totally ready.

After having a great lunch (the hamburgers are fabulous) we all got ready to head back to the ranch. The first mile or sowas on the California Riding and Hiking trail to a small valley named Burnt Valley. We crossed Burnt Valley to enter acouple of miles of water canyon which paralleled Highway 371. This portion of the ride took you through a narrow can-yon with some water and mud, giant Oak trees, Cattails, and all on a very narrow trail. This portion of the trail was actu-ally cut out by Cathy and me over 3 days where we had to clear the entire trail as it was totally overgrown. The result wasa unique ride with growth higher than us on horseback following a zigzag route ending up at the entrance to Anza Valley. We then rode across the valley for about a mile where we were again met by our ground crew with water. It was quitewarm so this added stop was greatly appreciated. It then was only about 45 minutes home for a brewsky.

The stats for this day’s ride are: 16 miles long; total ascent and descent of 2,045’, 6 hours total including lunch, and anaverage moving speed of 4.1 mph. There were two purebred Peruvian Horses, one half Peruvian/Foxtrotter, two SpottedMountain horses, and six Foxtrotters or Tennessee Walkers. Safari del Sol led the ride with me while Cathy on her Peru-vian, Holly, rode towards the rear to monitor the riders.

That night, as is typical for these rides, we had a great potluck dinner and get together. We had as guests our ground crewsand special guest Hope Adams and husband Bill. Hope is a well known gaited horse trainer whose ranch is located about¼ miles from us. Hope has known several of our members since clear back to the 80’s when she was located in MorongoValley. We all had a great visit and went to bed stuffed.

On Sunday we had a casual ride from the ranch to a dry reservoir up the same direction of the previous day’s ride. Againwe had a climb affording a great view of the valley. Itwas only about 8 miles long and took a couple of hours. This gave the horses a chance to relax and work out thekinks from Saturday’s ride.

The entire weekend was great and, per messages fromall riders, was greatly enjoyed by all. They were sur-prised by the quality of riding this area affords and arelooking forward to coming back next June when Cathyand I will take them on new trails including a portion ofthe Pacific Crest Trail ending up at the opposite side ofthe valley at the top of Coyote Canyon. Should anyonebe interested in coming up here for a ride, we would beglad to take them out on some wonderful tails of all lev-els of difficulty.

RANCHO VISTA DEL SOL RANCH NEWSOn September 11th Thru 13th Cathy and I hosted the monthlyride for the High Desert Trail Riders from our ranch in Anza,CA. This club has a monthly scheduled ride the second week-end of every month located at various locations from ourranch to the Sierras. We are even having a ride next year inFlagstaff. All members are adults and experienced riders sowe planned a challenging ride with about every kind of terrainone could think of short of being in the ocean.

As most all are aware who were at the Grand Champion Showin Burbank, it was quite warm so on Friday all passed on rid-ing in lieu of visiting around the campers and enjoying theviews from the ranch. We have an elevated location overlook-ing the valley surrounded on the rear by Thomas Mountain. We had six rigs spread around the ranch with room formany more.

We took off at 9 o’clock Saturday morning heading east towards Tho-mas Mountain. The first 30 minutes of the ride took us across fields anddown dirt roads where we were able to get our horses warmed up for theensuing work. From the dirt road we cut off on a single file trail whichwinds through high desert fields and climbs slightly to the base of themountain. For the next mile we climbed up a fire road for about a 1,000’elevation rise to the top where we took a well deserved breather. Thefire road was typically eroded by rain and near the top we had to skirtbetween several boulders which had fallen on the road forcing us toclimb around them on narrow trails tight against the upper bank. Thisclimb was a bit challenging but all the horses were well conditioned andfared in excellent shape. From the top you get a fabulous view of AnzaValley far below.

After our ten minute break we continued on a trail which went up anddown towards our ultimate elevation of about 5,203’ - Basecamp at theranch is 4,224’. Just before reaching the summit we had two very steepclimbs to make. One was climbable by using the soft shoulder and rid-

ing straight up but the last climb was too steep to go straight up so Cathy and I had flagged a switchback route on oneside bringing you out within 20’ of the top where they justhad to tough it out a bit. All made it safely but needed an-other good rest at the top. From this resting point there wasa view of both Anza Valley on the west and Garner Valleyto the east. The view was tremendous and breathtaking.

After our breather we headed down to Garner Valley. Thisentailed the use of a pretty technical eroded trail down theother side of the mountain. Cathy and I had previously hadto take our shovel and loppers down part of the trail to clearthe brush which had covered the trail. The bottom was asteep rocking descent to a high class development withfabulous ranch homes. At the bottom of the descent was atrail sign designating the tail up as “treacherous”? This de-velopment has its own trail system which we then used totraverse the development to get to a trail across the tree cov-ered flat valley parallel to Highway 74 moving south. Therewere large meadows and gave us time to relax and ourhorses recover from their workout.
