HEALTH & WELLBEING PARENT SURVEY At Langwarrin Park Primary we are committed to improving the health, wellbeing and safety of all our students. An exciting new initiative we have launched is the Langwarrin Positive Education Network. Our THRIVE model of wellbeing uses the science of positive psychology and the KidsMatter framework. To find out more about how we are working to allow every student to THRIVE please visit our website: http://www.langwarrinparkps.vic.edu.au/page/173/Positive-Education An important aspect of the successful implementation is the consultation process with parents and carers. You are invited to complete a short survey about your perceptions of the School’s work in the area of mental health and wellbeing. Your feedback will help us plan and improve the way we support our school community. Please complete the survey by following this link: https://secure.peoplepulse.com.au/survey.php?mid=140124ef0657b439330 . Please complete the survey by Monday 13th November. KidsMatter has a range of resources and information relevant to your child’s developmental stage. To learn more about KidsMatter or access the free resources please visit https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/primary CHILDREN AND VIDEO GAMES: PLAYING WITH VIOLENCE Playing video games has become a popular activity for people of all ages. Video games have become very sophisticated and realistic. Some games connect to the internet, which can allow children and adolescents to play games and have discussions with unknown adults and peers. While some

games have educational content, many of the most popular games emphasize negative themes.

Studies of children exposed to violent media have shown that they may become numb to violence, imitate the violence, and show more aggressive

behavior. Younger children and those with emotional, behavioral or learning problems may be more influenced by violent images.

In moderation, playing age-appropriate games can be enjoyable and healthy. Some video games may promote learning, problem solving and help with the development of fine motor skills and coordination. However, there are concerns about the effect of video games on young people who play

videogames excessively.

Children and adolescents can become overly involved with videogames. They may have difficulty controlling the amount of time they play. They

may resist their parents’ attempts to limit their time playing video games. Spending excessive time playing these games can lead to:

Less time socialising with friends and family

Poor social skills

Time away from family time, school work, and other hobbies

Lower grades

Less reading

Less exercise and becoming overweight

Decreased sleep and poor quality sleep

Aggressive thoughts and behaviors

Tips for Parents

Parents can help their children enjoy these video games appropriately and avoid problems by:

Avoiding video games in preschool-aged children

Checking the ratings to select appropriate games—both in content and level of development

Playing videogames with their children to share the experience and discuss the game’s content

Setting clear rules about game content and playing time, both in and outside the home

Monitoring online interactions and warning children about potential dangers of Internet contacts while playing games online

Allowing video game playing only in public areas of the home, not in the child’s bedroom

Remembering that you are a role model for your children including which video games you play and how long you play them

Enforcing total screen time limits

Ensuring video games are only played after homework and chores are done

Encouraging participation in other activities, particularly physical activities

VISUAL ARTS

ARTIST INSPIRATION Edvard Munch the Norwegian expressionist painter took year six by surprise, making a comeback to art in 2017. ‘The Scream of Nature’, oil painting (1839) inspired students to display movement, blending oil pastels creating a smooth finish. Some students also completed a clay portrait.

BUDDY BENCHES

Mrs. Barrett would like to make a special mention to Calan Hickey (6/5) and Leo Paulsen (6/7) for their assistance completing the Buddy

Benches. Great job!

YEAR 3 CAMP

MOUNT MORTON We started the camp with a great adventure on Puffing Billy and a picnic lunch. Camp consisted of many adventure activities where children were

encouraged to believe in themselves and have a try at everything. We were astounded at how some children conquered fears with the

encouragement of their teams. Activities included flying fox, giant swing, rock climbing, archery, orienteering, hut building and initiatives. All activities

relied on team work and co operation. For many students it was a huge challenge to sleep over somewhere other than at home, but teachers and

team mates coaxed them through to success. We also hosted a movie night and a disco night where we danced the night away.

LIBRARY BOOK CLUB Issue 7 orders have been placed and we look forward to distributing these new books to students next week. Thank you for your continued support of this valuable program. 2 FOR 1 BOOK FAIR Our school has qualified for a special 2 for 1 Book Fair which is a pop-up book store similar to our Book Fair in August. The special element is that for every book purchased a book of the same value will be donated by Scholastic to our school. These donated books will be distributed to classrooms and the Library and will certainly be well received by our students. The Book Fair will be held in our Library on Tuesday 14 & Wednesday 15 November from 8.30am—4pm. Further details will be sent home in the coming weeks. PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE Our Premiers’ Reading Challenge certificates have arrived and have been distributed this week. Congratulations to the 236 students that met this years Challenge. These students names will soon be included on this years prestigious Honour Roll at the PRC website. In a covering letter to the school the Premier of Victoria states; “We know that literacy is a key element in a child’s education and developing a love of reading is one of the key ways to improve literacy skills. Reading can inspire students, build their knowledge and take them on a journey through a world of learning. In the words of well-known author Dr Suess: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”….Congratulations to all students….”. This Dr Suess book was my inspiration for our recent Book Week dress up for that very reason. Kate Mowat Library Manager

Please ensure that you have opted in to this feature by opening the Qkr! App, going into Settings (by clicking the 3 horizontal bars in the top left of the screen) and opt in to receive push notifications. You can also just go into Settings on your phone, scroll down to Qkr! and change notification function there. Please ensure you have the correct grade and room number registered for your child/ren. This will avoid delays in processing Qkr! Payments. Check our school website for more information on Editing personal details or Forgotten Password how to guides. SECURITY There have been a few issues with Parents being unable to access Qkr! Due to lost/forgotten passwords and/or incorrect email address. Qkr! has provided this information: Lost and Forgotten Passwords If you have ever experienced password reset issues with Qkr!, we have a new FAQ with instructions at https://qkr.mastercard.com/au/faq But in short, due to high security and protections around not letting accounts get hijacked by a third party claiming to have lost their password, it is often much quicker and easier to call the help desk on 1800 689 562 and ask to have your account deleted (and then immediately re-register on the Qkr! App) if you cannot easily reset your password using the instructions provided within the FAQ. Given this strong security , some people have nominated to use their fingerprint as their password. WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK On 1 August 2017 legislation changed which requires everyone in direct contact with students to obtain a Working with Children Check.
