LANCELIN PRIMARY SCHOOL
Dear Parents and Friends
I can’t believe first term is nearly over, as the old saying goes “Time flies when you are having fun!”
This is my last newsletter as Principal at this wonderful school and I would like to thank the students, staff, families and wider community for making me feel so welcome in my two terms here. It has been an absolute privilege for me to have the opportunity to lead such an amazing school and to learn and develop as a leader.
Principal appointment The process to appoint the new Principal has been finalised. I know the whole school community joins me in congratulating Mrs Jemma Temby as the successful applicant to take over as Principal from the start of term two. Jemma has been my right hand woman in my time here as Principal and I know how much she wants the best for all our students. I wish her all the best on the start of this new professional journey. Violence in Schools We believe every student has the right to be safe at school. We provide learning environments that foster positive behaviour and respect for your children and those around them. Similarly, teachers and school staff should feel safe in their work place, free of physical aggression and abuse. We are fortunate that students at Lancelin Primary School are able to learn in a safe and supportive environment. At times, though, some children can be physically aggressive. This is never acceptable. The State Government has released a Statement to address violence in schools. It sets out 10 actions to help school staff, families and communities work together on this complex issue. Programs and resources will be available to parents to support their children. A copy of the Statement is available on the Department’s website at education.wa.edu.au.
At Lancelin Primary School, we have plans, programs and policies in place to support all our students to maintain
positive behaviour. We also have consequences and sanctions that are imposed when children are violent towards
others. As parents, you play a vital role. Your children benefit from positive modelling and rewarding positive
behaviour. Lancelin Primary School looks forward to your ongoing support to maintain our school as a positive and
safe place for all.
Good Standing Good Standing provides a framework designed to reward students who display pride, respect and consideration for school, self and others by consistently demonstrating respect for the ethos, values and behaviour expectations of the school and is one of the ways we encourage our students to take responsibility for their actions and consistently set themselves high behavioural expectations. This term, teachers have been working on the development of Good Standing Guidelines to be added to our Positive Wellbeing and Engagement Policy. Stay tuned for more information about this in term two. On ya Bike! There is a buzz of excitement around the school since the announcement of the Win a Bike colouring in
competition yesterday. The school has been really lucky to have 11 bicycles donated: one is a brand new bike for
use in kindy and pre-primary; and the other 10 are recycled and reinvigorated bicycles individual students can win
by entering a colouring in competition which closes on Monday (colouring in sheets went home yesterday). I would
like to sincerely thank Wanneroo Cycle City for their kind donation and Senior Constable Dave Baggott for
organising this donation for our students. Senior Constable Baggott will be at Wednesday morning’s assembly to
announce the winners!
Student Leadership On Friday 22 March our Year 6 students began their leadership skills training with Mark Clayden of 4theteam. The
students had a great time working together and participating in some challenging and confronting activities. I would
again like to thank the Bendigo Bank for their support of this program as we fit our students for the future. We look
forward to Mark returning in term two to work with our Year 5 and Year 6 students.
Harmony Day Celebrations – Wednesday 27 March On Wednesday 27 March we celebrated Harmony Day at school. Lots of students dressed up in traditional cultural
costumes or wore orange on the day as we acknowledged and celebrated our multicultural society. A huge thank
you to the parents who assisted in the cooking on the day – we could not have done it without your help. The
children really enjoyed sampling cuisine from a number of different countries.

Game! Set! Match! On Friday 29 March, Jarron Kretschmann from Sun City Tennis Academy ran a tennis workshop with our students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Jarron coaches tennis in the north of our state and Darwin and we were fortunate to have him come all the way to Lancelin Primary School from Geraldton to work with your children. I am pleased to announce that he will be back again in term two to provide another day of coaching/training. It’s Catching We have had a number of students absent from school in the last week. Some incidents of head lice have been reported. As you will know, head lice are small insects that live in human hair. The eggs look like grains of salt stuck to the hair and most often found behind the ears and along the forehead and temples. Head lice are very common, particularly in schools, where children often have their heads close together. Head lice can live in the cleanest hair. They don’t make you sick, but can cause itching, especially in children, so you may have noticed your child scratching lately. Would you please make every effort to check for this problem as parents are treating their children and sending them back to school only to find they are being re-infested. Head lice are very persistent and it is imperative that as well as treating the hair, an attempt is made to remove all eggs – if this does not happen, the eggs hatch and the whole cycle starts again. The Principal has discretion under the School Education Act 1999 to require that a student does not attend or participate in an educational program until parents confirm that a recommended treatment is being undertaken and all head lice have been removed. A note will be sent home by the class teacher, if there is a report of lice or nits in the class. We ask that you check your child’s hair and return the slip on the bottom of the note. With the weekend here, it is the best opportunity to check and treat if necessary. Please remember, students with shoulder length or longer hair need to have it tied back. Influenza season has started with a bang this year. As you know, it is highly contagious with viruses mainly spread
by droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Influenza can also be spread through touching
surfaces where infected droplets have landed. Information from the Health Department website is that adults are
most infectious in the first 3-5 days of their illness, while children remain infectious for 7-10 days, so should your
child have influenza, they need to be away from school. A visit to the GP will enable a definitive diagnosis.
Take care
