Happy New Year! We hit 2020 running, focused and determined. Our eyes are on the prize. Teachers are teaching, students are learning, Counselors are evaluating, Administrators and Staff are collaborating, all in an effort to reach the #NEXT LEVEL! It is our GOAL to become an exemplary campus with an “A” rating.

With that goal in mind, we will administer Mock testing for STAAR, encourage every senior to complete their FASFA, and prepare juniors to take and pass the TSI.

Thousands of students, parents and community members crowded the halls of Lancaster High School January 25 for Lancaster ISD’s annual STEM Expo.

“It’s exciting to be here to see such a love for STEM,” said LHS Associate Principal and Dean of Instruction Kirsten Jett during a podcast interview with the WEBO Podcast Network.

“Seeing our upper class students being able to share their knowledge with some of the younger students. When I was walking around seeing some of the older children doing their presentations and really explaining to the younger students how their projects work and why they are working because of science.”

Lancaster ISD Board of Trustees President Ellen Clark loves coming to the STEM Expo - especially to see the elementary students.

National Signing Day is one of the most important days in a young athletes life.

“It gives athletes that are graduating going onto the next level some exposure,” says Head Football Coach Christopher Gilbert.

“It also motivates our younger athletes to continue to press forward and to try to meet the same expectations in order to further their education through sports.”

Signing Day doesn’t just bring exposure to the young athletes but to the school also.

“It is a very positive happening for our entire school district actually because all of our kids in Lancaster look forward to see what’s going to happen on signing day and where these guys will be going to college and who has the opportunity to go and so the next group of guys are always excited about that happening,” added Gilbert.

This year’s National Signing Day event was Wednesday, February 5, at 9 a.m. in the Lancaster High School Coliseum. Athletes signed scholarships to play football, basketball, volleyball and run track in college. One athlete signed an academic scholarship with the University of Texas after scoring a 28 on his ACT.

Endorsement night was a night where the incoming high school students can choose their career pathway for their next 4 years of high school.

“Endorsement night is for parents and students to come out and see some of our career technical education programs in action,” says District Career and Technical Education Coordinator Sheila Benskin.

“We’ll have on deck many of the programs that the students can study in and they’ll be able to take to both the teachers and students about items or curriculum and the program along with activities and events that happen in those particular organizations.”

This is also a way to help students figure out what they want to do in their future, and receive an understanding of the skills they will need to be in their chosen field of work .

“It gives students a head start on understanding what they want to do in the future and so they get a glimpse of what a career might look like and what knowledge and skills that they would need to have to be successful in a particular field,” adds Benskin.

Endorsement night was January 28 in the LHS Cafeteria.

Staff and faculty at Lancaster High School have a nutrition program available to them through the school’s Culinary Arts program.

“This program is providing breakfast, lunch, and the two snacks that the teachers need everyday. Being an educator, we only have 30 minutes for lunch. Sometimes not 30 minutes, So this is offering them an opportunity to get the meals in and not skip a meal on a daily basis,” says Culinary Arts Instructor Chef LaTina Dawn.

This nutritional program has changed many diets. Most teachers are satisfied with the change.

“This program has given me more energy during the day,” stated Football Coach & Social Studies Teacher Guy Crawford.

Dawn adds its important to watch what goes into your body.

“It is important to balance your diet on a daily basis so you can keep your levels straight, as long as you are putting the right nutrients in your body you don’t have to worry about high blood pressure or diabetes,’’ said Chef Dawn

“I love the little ones because they love to explain their projects,” says Clark.

“Sometimes, when they explain it to you, it makes sense -- if you were six years old! They are so proud and so happy. Then, as you go up to the bigger children, their projects are awesome.”

This year’s STEM Expo featured projects from every grade level and every school in the district. There was also a book fair, an art area to integrate the arts into STEM, a 4C competition and special showcases from high school CTE pathway programs.

“I love coming. The kids are so proud of their projects and they’ve done such an awesome job,” emphasized Clark.

Some Seniors Set toVote for the First

    Time EverE’ja Alexander (12)

In March, seniors that are of age will vote for their first time during the school’s Stroll to the Poll event.

“Stroll to the poll is every election day. We normally vote early so that all the students from all areas can vote at the Lancaster library,” says Economics Instructor and senior sponsor Teffonee Anderson.

Voting is important because, it not only gives one a voice, but it’s a way to express one’s freedom and independence as an individual.

“It gives young eighteen year olds and young students the first opportunity to exercise their rights as voting citizens,” adds Anderson

In order to vote, you have to be 18 or turning 18 within the month voting is happening.

“Voting gives students the chance to have their voice heard on important issues and choose the elected official that they want to represent them,”continues Anderson.

The 2020 primary is March 3. Early voting begins statewide February 18.
