NEW RADIO ADVERTISING

The school will shortly be releasing some new radio advertising that was recorded with the assistance of some Junior and Senior students. This is what one excited student had to say about his experience. 1.. I represented the school in a unique way by making a radio advertisement for the school. 2. This was the first time I had a chance to go to a radio station and to have the amazing experience. 3. The most interesting part was watching the Editor putting in the sound effects and changing the way the voice sounded. 4. It was exciting to have the opportunity to record my voice for a radio advertisement for the school. 5. I will always remember this experience.

AFTERNOON MESSAGES are given to students immediately after lunch. Please be aware that the school reception area

is a very busy time at the end of school and it is unreasonable to expect that a message can be taken out to students who

have already departed their classrooms for the day to stand in bus lines or parent pickup. If you need to get a message

to your child regarding alternative travel arrangements please contact the school reception prior to 1.30pm.

Students in parent pick-up lines who are not collected on time will be held in the office until your arrival.

JUNIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY NEWS

Congratulations to all students who finished their 2015 PRC. All in all we have had 140 completed. This is 10 more than last year. A wonderful effort!

Remember: PRC finishes on Monday, 24 August 2015 – please have your completed logs in by then as they cannot be entered after

this date. Please note the PRC website has changed. Please use the following link now for any information on the PRC: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html ILLUSTRATOR VISIT – SARAH DAVIS (6/8)

We had the wonderful opportunity to have Sara Davis talk to Years 1 to 3 about illustrating. The students were very excited to see Sarah’s characters slowly come to life! Selected students in Years 4-6 then had the opportunity to attend a workshop in the JS Library, learning valuable hints and tips about how to draw characters! We thank Sarah for spending the time with us leading up to Book Week.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR – 24-27 August

Our annual Book Fair is again happening next week during Book Week. Students will be writing out wish lists soon and will bring them home should you wish to purchase anything. It is our Library’s biggest fundraiser and all commissioned sales come back as library resources. Please check posters near library for further details…

WHEELERS eBOOKS

Has your child accessed our Wheelers eBook facility yet? If they are in Years 4-6 and have an iPad, Android or similar device, they can read our growing collection of eBooks either online or downloaded. They can also borrow an ipad from the JS Library at lunch. Please see library staff for more details or grab a brochure from the JS Library. Why not use this service in the next holidays?

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

Matt’s Mutterings As I type this my body is not aching for the first time in 6 months. Yes there is an occasional twinge, but no I am not needing to shuffle as I walk (read limp) or gently lower myself into a chair due to another hamstring strain. You see, the season is over and I didn’t play the round ball game on the weekend. As this has been my first season back playing weekend soccer my body has had a rude shock every Saturday afternoon since late March. But now it is all over and my body can hopefully recover. The key will be trying to maintain some level of fitness for next year’s season.

At the beginning of the year I shared with the students that I was going to try and stay fit and being accountable to them has actually proven extremely helpful. Only the other day a Year 11 student asked me how the “running” was going and I was able to share what I’ve been up to. Working with the students at Lakes Grammar also inspires me to stay active, to live life abundantly and with joy. Our students are footballers, dancers, gymnasts, swimmers, archers, magicians, runners, leapers, cricketers, hockey players, horse riders, dragon boat paddlers, nippers, baseballers, skiers, and more. Each in their own way expresses something of the amazement of being created in God’s image. Truly inspiring.

So as my body recovers, bruises mend, strains ease and aches become a distant memory I will look forward to another season. Yes, next year I will be a little slower, but hopefully a little wiser too. And the joys of belonging to a team that works together will put a smile on my face each Saturday. Maybe you know something of this feeling too, belonging to a team and working together. My mate Jesus had a fishing team, that was his sport, and I’m glad that I get to fish all year round rather than have to wait for a new comp. Fishing with Jesus is even better than the round ball game and that really is making a claim. Now where did I put that deep heat lotion?

YEAR 12 NEWS!

Where has the year gone? This term has undoubtedly been a real test for Year 12 students who got a good taste of the HSC with their trial examinations. Most of them demonstrated a remarkable improvement in study habits. I have really enjoyed watching them put together flow charts, topic summaries and working with each other, and their teachers in an effort to cement their understanding of a variety of topics.

I have also really enjoyed many of the conversations regarding life after school. Many of our Year 12 students know exactly which university course or career they want. Others are still contemplating a variety of possibilities, while others are still unsure of what awaits them after school. Many of our Year 12s are going onto further study at university and are now considering which courses or university to attend. They have received their UAC guide which outlines all of the university courses and how to apply to each of those universities. We have recommended that ALL students wishing to further their education at university apply for the School Recommendation Scheme. This provides them with the possibility of needing a lower ATAR and receive a university offer in November instead of January. Other students contemplating further study at TAFE or who are chasing jobs and apprenticeships should visit the Lakes Grammar Careers page.

“Don’t take your foot off the accelerator just yet” is what I told Year 12 this week following their trials. It is important that they carry their momentum through to the end of term and into their September study vacation.

The Year 12 graduation and formal is approaching very fast. Please remember to RSVP to your invitation as soon as possible. We would love to see you there.

Only 28 days to go. Greg Sewell (Year Adviser)

IT’S SCIENCE WEEK!

At Lakes we are celebrating Science this week with a number of events for students across various grades. We kicked off the celebrations last Friday when Year 9 participated in a production called “What’s the Matter?” The Theme for Science Week this year is ‘Making Waves – The Science of Light” and Year 9 spent a very entertaining afternoon learning all about the connection between Einstein’s Gravitational Theory, Matter and Light. Special mention does need to be made of the fantastic performances of Brendan Smith throughout the show.

Throughout the week there is a Science Trivia Competition running for all students from Year 7 to Year 12. Quite a number of students have already submitted answers to the ten selected questions for their age group and now eagerly await the results and winner announcement next Monday. For anyone who may feel like increasing their scientific knowledge with random, yet interesting facts there is a fun app called Science Facts that can be downloaded for free.

Lunchtime Thursday we had Aeronautical Engineering time as students in the Senior School and some students from the Junior School OC had the opportunity to take part in a competition in which they designed and built a paper plane. The aim is to make the paper plane remain air born the longest or fly horizontally the furthest. I watched a number of Year 7 students practicing their construction and launch skills throughout the week so this competition should prove quite competitive.

Page 6: LAKES GRAMMAR – AN A S12+-+August+2015.pdf · and Trashin’ the Camp from the Tarzan Medley’. ... ‘This Pretty Planet’ and ‘Australian Medley’. Thank you to all of our

Finally, today the Science and Technology Challenge was held for all Year 8 students. The students have chosen a Challenge to undertake with a partner and will compete against 5 – 6 other teams to see who has mastered the skills required to meet the challenge set. Some of our Year 6 students who have shown interest in Science and Technology have been invited up to participate and compete against the Year 8 students. There are prizes to be won as a result of all of our Science Week activities so Good Luck to all! Last term all Year 6 and Year 7 students as well as two Year 4 classes, took part in the RACI (Royal Australian Chemistry Industry) Crystal Growing Competition. This week we received the results and they show there were some great Alum crystals grown by our students. As we have Chemistry Week coming up soon we will publish these great results then.

Happy Science Week!

‘DUKE OF EDINBURGH’ AND

‘THE POPPY PROJECT’ UPDATE

It’s approaching the time of year where students need to ensure they are registered online and paid their registration fees for their

current DofE award. Once you have finished a particular section of your award, print the offline assessor form and present it to your

assessor for signing. Once this is completed return it to me at school for filing or upload it to your Online Record Book.

Don’t forget our current community service project offered is red poppies. Our aim was to make

100 poppies and present them to Doyalson RSL for Remembrance Day 2015. So far I have

186 poppies, which is amazing. A big thank you to Allyson Kilpatrick’s mother who has made

the majority of poppies pictured here. If students or parents would like to be involved in this

project please email me for a pattern. I have knitting patterns for beginners and crocheting

patterns for advanced. Learning to knit is a worthy fine motor skill and this project can

contribute to community service hours or skill hours for your Duke of Edinburgh Award. Mrs

Hobden and I are busy thinking of some creative ways we can present the poppy artwork to

the RSL. If students have any ideas for poppy artworks please come and talk to me.

We are excited to announce that we have 7 students who are close to completing their Gold

Award this year. To celebrate their final expedition both the silver and gold students have been invited on an expedition to the beautiful

and famous Moreton Bay in Qld. On this journey they will climb and slide down amazing 80m high sand dunes, paddle with dolphins,

snorkel on reefs and explore majestic beaches in kayaks. An added bonus is watching the sunsets whilst camping on famous beaches

like South Stradbroke Island. Airflights for this trip have now been purchased and final payments will be due by the 6 th Nov.

The Bronze students will be exploring the picturesque Hawkesbury region for their qualifying expedition in Term 4. This expedition

takes students hiking on the Great North walk and kayaking to various islands with unique nature reserves, sandy private beaches,

mud flats and waterfalls. Many of the areas we explore are only accessible by hiking or paddling.

Both the above trips are examples of the unique wilderness adventures the Duke of Edinburgh program can offer. If your child enjoys

a challenge maybe encourage them to register for the Duke of Edinburgh program in 2016. Enrolment instructions for the current Year

8 students will be distributed late in Term 4. To find out if this program suits your child go to http://www.dukeofed.com.au/.

SCHOOL REPRESENTATION: It is a great honour to represent Lakes Grammar and HRIS. It is obvious a student has a talent in a

particular sport if they are chosen for representative duties and as such should treat it is a privilege. Recently we have had far too many students withdraw from events without notice and for simple reasons, such as I did not want to go. Associations such as HRIS, AICES and CIS have introduced fines for students who withdraw without a medical certificate. Last year HRIS passed a motion that students withdrawing from a team event without sufficient notice or medical certificate will be suspended from HRIS selection for 12 months, I

AICES/CIS/PSSA/ALL SCHOOLS: For those students who are selected in HRIS Teams that compete at AICES, NSW CIS, NSW

PSSA or All Schools there are associated levies and charges. Typically students attending AICES will be charged $10. Students attending NSW CIS $22.50 and those going to NSW PSSA or All Schools $30 - $40. These charges are for administration and venue entry fees. Lakes Grammar covers all charges for HRIS events but charges at the higher levels are charged to parents.

RUGBY LEAGUE 7s: The school has selected teams to compete at the CIS Rugby League 7s competition. The Opens will play on

SHOOTING: In the last few months Corey Martin of Year 10 has competed in the Tri-State competition which was held in Adelaide.

Through great results NSW won the competition. Corey has recently competed with the Australian high achievers squad in Canberra. As Corey in a member of the Australian state and national team he is training hard with the guidance of his coach to try and qualify for the Commonwealth Games and Brazil Olympics squad. Congratulations Corey on this fine achievement and keep up the great work.

CANTEEN NEWS

JUNIOR CANTEEN`

During Term 3, the Junior Canteen is running a program linked with “Fresh for Kids Campaign”. The challenge is to encourage children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables during Term 3. The promotion runs from 10 August till 18 September. After one week over 50 pencils have been given away already. Students are simply rewarded with a sticker for purchasing food from the canteen that contains fresh fruit and/or vegetables at a cost of $1.00. SENIOR CANTEEN

I would like to thank all families who continue to support the service of the canteen. I must say the students are amazing, kind-hearted, polite and always keen to assist in any way they can.

The Senior Canteen is holding our Term 3 Red Day on Thursday, 27 August. This is a fun day for them, giving them the opportunity to

purchase and enjoying treats at school they normally would not be able to purchase.

I continue to seek out more wonderful volunteers to assist me to ensure the ongoing success of the canteen. If you are, or a member of your family is interested in being a part of your children’s school life, if you want to meet other parents and have a bit of fun and have some free time, (whether it be 1 hour, ½ day or full day) please call or see me in the Senior Canteen, or contact me [email protected]. Volunteering a full day you receive a yummy lunch of your choice and $5.00 to spend on each child you have in the Senior School.

I look forward to continuing to deliver a wide variety of great food that our children will enjoy and parents will be happy for them to be consuming.
