It is mainly grass tracks with no steep climbs, but does include a stream crossing using stepping stones. Grid reference SH963240. T-uchaf walk On the north of the lake, this trail is 4.3 miles along forest tracks and roads, with a gentle incline. You will wander through mature conifer trees and get great views of the lake. SH969238. Llechwedd-du walk The track opposite the boathouse, on the south side of the lake, is the start point for this 5-mile trail. The forest track takes you through clearings, conifer and birch trees. Gentle slopes, except one steep boggy section. You may prefer to retrace your outward route rather than make this descent, which leads to the road. SJ013194. Llechwedd-du short trail A short trail of 1.7 miles starting from the RSPB shop along roads and tracks. Short but sweet, you will have great views of the lake, Straining Tower, dam and woodland birds. SJ016191. THE TRAILS Look out for dippers in the river on the Rhiwargor trail. Look out for goshawks on the Llechwedd- du walk. You’re likely to see crossbills in coniferous woods on the Llechwedd-du short trail. Kids will love the Nestbox puzzle trail. Pick up a leaflet from the RSPB shop. The Grwn-oer trail is a great option if you only have an hour to spare. Keep your eyes peeled for grey wagtails, kingfishers and grey herons on the Water trail. The Craig Garth-bwlch trail takes you past an early Quaker burial ground. If you’d rather avoid the lakeside road, take the T-uchaf walk. In summer, butterflies love this area. Look out for them on pink campion plants. Nestbox puzzle trail Pick up a Nestbox puzzle sheet from the RSPB shop and start your adventure! Can you tell who lives where and who is on the pecking order pole? Directions: Turn left out of the RSPB shop. The trail begins outside the toilet block – look for the signpost Short Trail and Puzzle Trail. Follow the trail to return along the road, or retrace your steps. SJ016191. Water trail (not signposted) A short, mile-long walk from the RSPB shop, mainly flat, with one descent of 92 steps. Directions: Turn left out of RSPB shop and after a few yards, turn right to cross the dam. At the far end of the dam, go through the wooden gate on the right and descend the steps to the footbridge below the dam. Cross the footbridge and choose your path through Sculpture Park – bear right for the riverside path, or left to see the sculptures. The paths come together at the road entrance to Sculpture Park. Beyond the cattle grid, cross the footbridge on the right and turn right along the road. In a few yards, go through the gate on the right for the riverside path. Follow the Visitor Facilities signs through the car park, uphill to the road. Turn right along the roadside footpath and return to the start. SJ016191. Craig Garth-bwlch trail Starting at the RSPB shop, this trail is 2.7 miles of forest tracks and lanes, with two fairly strenuous climbs. Great views of Dyfnant Forest, the dam and lake. SJ016191. Grwn-oer trail Begin your walk at Llanwddyn village bottom car park and take the one mile stroll along the river and forest.
